Simon Cowell's Sweet Afternoon With Mezhgan Hussainy!

Simon Cowell is worried about his thighs before his big wedding to Mezhgan Hussainy.

The X Factor and American Idol judge has been reportedly drinking several fruit and vegetable mix shakes every day in an effort to slim down.

Cowell has lost 12 pounds from his homemeade V8 efforts.

According to The Mirror, Cowell said, “I am vain. I’m obsessed with my weight,” which explains why he has no issues downing 200 ml mixes of “spinach and banana” drinks.

Not that Popeye’s food and Chiquita Organic aren’t good.

But as a couple, their compatibility is questionable.

Admittedly, the drinks sound like a great way to get servings of produce in, especially for a guy who’s so committed to bettering the environment, he’s giving Meat Free Mondays a try.

And all the good looking gents are doing this, as Peter Max can’t get enough of his salad in a glass either.

Pearl Lowe outside of the Met Bar in London

Designer Pearl Lowe may be choosing patterns for a crib and baby blanket, as she’s expecting her fifth child.

Like so many vegetarian women who become pregnant, Lowe has temporarily gone back to eating meat, but not because she’s craving the steakhouse.

And although she’s been anemic, the decision to eat meat during pregnancy after five years of vegetarianism isn’t something she’s happy with.

“I know that sounds a bit weird, and it’s not something I would have done otherwise, but I am very anaemic so I did it for the baby. It hasn’t been easy for me.”

Besides consulting with your doctor to see how you can incorporate plant based sources of iron into your diet when pregnant, the March of Dimes lists several sources of vegetarian iron, including dried fruits, iron fortified cereals, breads and pastas, oatmeal, whole grains, blackstrap molasses, dark green vegetables like spinach, broccoli and kale, nuts and seeds, beans, peas and eating the skins along with your potatoes.

There are also vegetarian iron supplements.

A baby on board might be a good time to try out other forms of  milk and trade the tofu for iron rich seitan, since both real milk and soy protein may block the absorption of iron.

NY Sportime (John McEnroe) VS Boston Lobsters (Martina Navratilova)

Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with breast cancer, but her prognosis is positive.

Getting in the bad habit of missing regular breast exams, Navratilova said another missed year could have been costly.

“I went four years between mammograms. I let it slide. Everyone gets busy, but don’t make excuses,” she said.

“I stay in shape and eat right, and it happened to me. Another year and I could have been in big trouble.”

Navratilova has been involved with animal activism and was a complete vegetarian for many years before adding fish to her diet.

Following a vegetarian diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene may increase the chances of survival if a diagnoses of breast cancer is obtained.

When researchers divided Australian women diagnosed with breast cancer into three groups based on the amount of beta-carotene containing fruits and vegetables they consumed, the group with the highest beta-carotene consumption experienced the fewest deaths over six years, while the group with the lowest experienced the most.

One possible explanation for this is that in the digestive tract, beta-carotene is converted to Vitamin A, which is then converted to retinoic acid, which has demonstrated anti-cancer effects on cells.

Gristle

Gristle

“Unless one treats their kitchen like a biohazard lab, there can be cross-contamination of contagion. In meat-eating households, researchers have found more fecal bacteria in the kitchen–on sponges, dish towels, the sink, and counter surfaces–than they found swabbing the rim of the toilet. We shouldn’t have to cook the crap out of food.”

—-Dr. Michael Greger, director of public health and animal agriculture at the Humane Society of the United States. Dr. Greger writes in Chapter 9 of “Gristle,” edited by Moby and Miyun Park, as he discusses possible zoonotic diseases linked to animal agriculture.

Dr. Greger suggests that many human infectious diseases, measles, smallpox, avian influenza and SARS came from animals.

116th Tournament Of Roses Parade

Sesame Street keeps up with the times, and although a children’s television show, isn’t afraid to touch on the dark side of things, such as war and parents being deployed through the military.

The issue of childhood obesity is a dark war, and Cookie Monster has stepped up to the plate of responsibility by eating more nutritious snacks like apples and kale.

“We are doing a lot of work on what we call Healthy Habits for Life, which focuses on simple messages like ‘sometimes foods,’ ” said Gary Knell, president and CEO of Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organization behind the show, to Alibi. “It’s a tool to try to promote healthier eating. So a mom in Albuquerque can tell her kid, Look, even the Cookie Monster can’t eat cookies all the time.”

A cooking eating in moderation Cookie Monster is a good start, considering there are so many other programs aimed at children that are constantly displaying ads for less than nutritional food.

One study done with three television networks, PBS, Disney, and Nickelodeon, found in 130 food-related ads in about 100 hours of preschool programming, more than half were geared towards school children and most promoted sugary cereals and fast food.

But make no mistake he’s still not Veggie Monster. Nor is he Yoga Monster either.

” ‘Saturday Night Live’ accused us of making him the Pilates Monster,” Knell said.

Candids: March 25, 2010

Karl Lagerfeld recently designed the bottle for Cola-Cola in France, which includes his silhouette and a pink cap.

Limited editions of this bottle, along with an opener, are being sold for $64 in France.

Lagerfeld is a big fan of Diet Coke, as he claims he lost almost 100 pounds drinking the beverage and eating steamed veggies, according to the Huffington Post.

Hopefully, there was a vegetable protein thrown in the veggies like pasta or tofu to make it healthier.

What worked for Lagerfeld (who currently still doesn’t eat meat) may not be the best option, as diet sodas and sodas in general probably contain ingredients from the Don’t Eat That List.

In addition, studies have found that diet sodas may actually increase weight gain as they make it harder to control your food intake.

Rats were given both yogurt sweetened with glucose and sweetened with a non-caloric sweetener.

The dieting rats gained more weight, put on more body fat and failed to cut back at the next dinner.

While rats aren’t people, the authors cited evidence that people who drink more diet sodas are at a higher risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome, a collection of medical problems like high blood pressure and insulin resistance that puts you at risk for heart disease and diabetes.

“Bearded Keanu Reeves tries very hard not to check out this fellow vegan’s long slim legs as he waits for a veggie takeaway at Real Foods Daily in Hollywood.”

Keanu and other gentleman might want to continue similar dining habits if they expect to get anywhere other than the “to go” line with any brunette, blond or redhead.

Oxygen’s Sue Johanson, registered nurse and sex educator, says that men who are vegetarian or vegan have semen that taste “sweet and nutlike,” while meat eaters’ taste like “burnt leather.”
