“Two years ago, I became a vegan. One of the reasons I became a vegan is my cholesterol. I stopped eating eggs. I stopped putting bad cholesterol into my body.”

John Salley, during an interview with The Healthy Voyager Caroline Scott on how going vegan improved his cholesterol levels.

Can food really do what drugs like Lipitor, Crestor and Zocor aim to do? Consider this bit of information from GoVeg. The average American’s cholesterol is 210. The average vegetarian’s cholesterol is 161 and the average vegan’s is 133. Anything above 150 raises your risk of atherosclerosis, the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries that could lead to heart disease or stroke. A study by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn (Rip‘s dad) published in the American Journal of Cardiology suggested patients who suffer from clogged arteries can become “heart-attack proof” by lowering their cholesterol to 150 or below.

Most Americans aren’t getting enough servings of fruits and vegetables, according to an article in Time which cites a study done by the Centers for Disease Control. And fruit consumption is lower than before.

In 2009, the CDC found that 1/3 of U.S. adults had 2 or more servings of fruit a day, which is down from 34% in 2000. Twenty-six percent of adults ate at least 3 servings of vegetables a day, which is the same as 2000.

Among the states that had the highest produce consumption, California took the lead for eating the most fruit and Tennessee for the most vegetables. Oklahoma came in last for eating the least amount of fruit and South Dakota residents ate the least amount of vegetables.

While CDC officials are disappointed with the results, Time emphasizes that the study was done before the wave of promoting home and community gardens. A new study is planned for 2011 to assess consumption again.

SAN RAFAEL, CA - FEBRUARY 17: A sign is posted in front of a Whole Foods store February 17, 2010 in San Rafael, California. Whole Foods’ CEO John Mackey recently told USA Today that the store will be unveiling a new, private label line next year that famous vegan firefighter and author Rip Esselstyn would approve of.

“We’ll introduce a private-label line in 2011 based on the healthy eating book The Engine 2 Diet,” Mackey said. “We’ve licensed that brand. It’s vegan (no animal fats) with no canola or safflower oils, and low in sugar and salt.”

The line offers products similar to what Mackey eats, but he insists that has nothing to do with its creation.

“Though that is the way I live, it is not my personal lifestyle driving this. We think it will be a good product category for the company.”

Looks like vegs will be ringing in the New Year with another option in good food.

Bill Clinton is keeping a vegetarian vow after embracing the diet to lose a few pounds for daughter Chelsea’s wedding.

Page Six reports that the former president of the United States was spotted eating a veggie burger at Babette’s in East Hampton, New York. And let’s hear it for Hillary, who chose the falafel instead of meat as well.

“He was sitting in a corner banquette, eating a veggie burger and a mountain of vegetables. He was with Hillary, who had a falafel plate, and her mother, Dorothy Rodham, who ate French toast. Hillary kept her sunglasses on throughout the meal, and a security guard stood outside the bathroom near their table.”

Awhile back the Daily Mail published a story on how Brad Pitt was disgusted by Angelina Jolie‘s meat-a-day habit and wanted the children to stop eating so much steak. Sure, it sounded like a tabloid rumor, but now Starpulse has published a quote from Jolie on how she used to be a vegan.

“I joke that a big juicy steak is my beauty secret,” Jolie said. “But seriously, I love red meat. I was a vegan for a long time, and it nearly killed me. I found I was not getting enough nutrition.”

This must be her secret to retiring early, cause red meat as a prophylactic will do nothing but send her screen career down the tubes if she’s unlucky enough to be stricken with illness. More studies are linking red and processed meats with cancer more often than actors and actresses hook up and break up.

If the land of veggies is giving you problems in nutrition land, we’ve said it before, now we’ll scream it again.

Elizabeth Hurley has made herself famous for her fantastic statements and gestures of health for people and animals.

As Borat would say, “NOT!”

From her “healthy” organic dinners containing meat, to admitting her love for beef jerky and other processed meats, and revealing too much information about sex on a dead animal by the fireplace, she never seems to impress. Lately, she’s mouthing off on Twitter about how breakfast isn’t necessary for adults, even if the doctors say so.
