A new film that tackles the issue of America’s dependency on foreign oil, Fuel, is screening in theatres across the country.

During the film, director Josh Tickell, rides across the nation in a vegetable oil powered van interviewing politicians, celebrity activists, and academics on a variety of alternative energy issues.

Know who else rides around in a veggie oil powered set of wheels?

Fred Mascherino, ex guitarist for Taking Back Sunday and creator of musical project, The Color Fred.

We bet Fred keeps his pants on while driving though.

Nicolas Sarkozy Asked To Initiate Vegetarian Day In France

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 28th, 2009 in Environment-Eco-Green, Food & Drink, Politicians.

World Leaders Attend First Day Of UN General Assembly

In a letter from the Brigitte Bardot foundation, France president Nicolas Sarkozy has been asked to implement a meat-free day in the country, starting with all public establishments, and encouraging the private sector to do so as well.

“Other than environmental and humane concerns, the refusal of meat consumption is also the best way to protest against the inhumanity and cruelty in factory farms, during transport and during the slaughter of billions of animals that are sacrificed and eaten each year,” the foundation wrote.

“There is already a ‘day ago without car’, a ‘day without tobacco’, but the initiation of a vegetarian day would have a much greater impact than all ‘carbon’ taxes put together, and the planet would be in infinitely better shape (which would be even still better if that vegetarian initiative would be valid for 365 days per year”).

Bardot’s request comes just after the Climate summit in New York and ahead of the Carbon Tax launch on fuels in France.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations states in their report “Livestock a major threat to environment,” that the livestock sector produces more gases than all of the transportation industry combined.

Last night on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Jon called Manhattan’s West side the “sad-eyed carriage horse district.”

Sad it is, as a recent crash involving a horse-drawn carriage and a taxi resulted in the carriage driver being thrown in the street and the horse making a run for it.

Is Jon trying to drop some hints on how he feels about the industry?

Watch Jon’s “Our Dead Planet” segment, a humorous take on environmentalism that indicates the Earth is trying to kill us.

The Age of Stupid Global Premiere Trailer from Age of Stupid on Vimeo.

Age of Stupid, a film which fast forwards to the year 2055 to let us see the devastating effects of climate change, premieres tonight at over 700 location in 50 countries.

Age of Stupid‘s filmmaker Franny Armstrong, is best known for the film McLibel, a documentary on the seven year long court battle between McDonald’s and two vegetarians who have some issues with corporate as well.

Given the fact that the meat industry contributes so much to climate change, Armstrong’s two movies seem to go hand in hand.

There is an interview with Armstrong at the New York Times.

Laugh Out Loud Comedy Benefit For Lifeworks Mentoring

Everybody knows Pamela Anderson shows her goodies in the name of animals, but do you remember Lt. Stephanie Holden, the other hot lifeguard from Baywatch?

Alexandra Paul is 46 and vegetarian strong, thanks to a book she read when she was 14 called Diet for a Small Planet.

She told Vegetarian Times in the October 2009 issue:

“I read Diet For a Small Plant when I was 14, just when I was formulating my ethics and “inhaling” new information. i wanted to be a good person and make a difference in the world. Vegetarian seemed to fit both bills.”

Knowing vegetarianism and environmentalism go hand in hand, Alexandra also does her part to help the planet. She co-wrote and produced Jam Packed, a documentary about overpopulation and appeared in the 2006 documentary Who Killed The Electric Car?

Hugh Jackman Climate Change Kick Off Can Prompt Diet Change

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 18th, 2009 in Actors, Environment-Eco-Green, Food & Drink.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Japan Premiere

Actor Hugh Jackman is set to kick start Climate Week NYC on Monday, September 21st.

“I hope to be a voice for the billion people in developing countries who will be the hardest hit by changing weather patterns, by the droughts and floods that destroy their crops and threaten their food security,” Jackman said in a statement.

“Climate Week NYC provides an ideal forum to help underscore the urgency for world leaders to secure and fund an ambitious global climate change deal in Copenhagen that is effective, fair and binding.”

Wouldn’t it be great if Hugh also took a huge step in preventing climate change and cut back on meat?

If you recall, Hugh had said he ate copious amounts of chickens to build muscle for his role in X Men Origins: Wolverine.

“Let me tell you, I’m not vegan,” Hugh had said. “I ate so many chickens to make this body. If there is a place in hell for people who eat chickens, I have booked a suite bigger than anybody.”

Hugh might not eat as many chickens as he did then, but he has the ability to serve as an example of how more people can be fed (and improve the food security of developing nations) on plants and grains versus meat.

And any veggie environmentalist knows raising livestock for food is a huge blow to planet stability.

Kudos to Hugh for taking an interest in such a serious matter.
