The Gap, Macy’s, Liz Claiborne Fight Mulesing

Several high profile retailers, including The Gap, Macy’s and Liz Claiborne Inc., are urging Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), which represents Australian wool producers, to phase out the practice of mulesing. Mulesing involves cutting a part of the lamb’s rear out in order to prevent maggots eating the animal’s flesh. Animal activists say this is usually done without anesthesia.

AWI had originally promised to stop the practice of mulesing by 2013, but is now shying away from this promise, something that has angered American wool buyers.

Urban Outfitters

It was recently discovered that Urban Outfitters was selling real fur under a faux label.

An unfortunate event, as this store could have been trusted by many animal lovers due to its popularity. It’s even on the Humane Society’s Fur-Free Retailers list.  However, Urban Outfitters has acknowledged the mistake, citing the product vendor’s factory as the source of the labelling issue and insists it remains committed to keeping its pledge not to sell fur items.

Ethical fashion blogger Joshua Katcher, who also blogs at TheDiscerningBruite.com, purchased the item from Urban Outfitters, the “S Loves C by Spring & Clifton Faux Fur Cardigan,” and put the garment through several test that can determine if something is real or fake fur.

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has launched a range of Indian vegetarian entrees, Shilpa’s Gourmet Creations.

The line is said to reflect the eating plan of the UK Celebrity Big Brother star, focusing on delivering both health and taste.

“Vegetables are a vital source of vitamins and minerals, but vegetarian doesn’t have to mean bland and rubbery food,” Shetty said.

Steve Wynn Brings Tal Ronnen On Board For Menu Revamp

The already vegan-friendly Wynn Las Vegas will be getting a veggie face-lift, as Steve Wynn has invited vegan chef Tal Ronnen to join the hotel’s culinary team.

After going vegan, the casino mogul put several vegan items on the menus at each of his restaurants. He also distributed a DVD copy of the film that inspired him to do so, Eating, to all of his employees. In addition, Wynn’s will was modified to include the Humane Society as a beneficiary.

“It’s an honor and pleasure to work with Steve Wynn, who recently became vegan, and his incredible team of chefs,” Ronnen said, according to VegNews.

Lyfe Kitchen–McHealth Food Via Ex McDonald’s Execs And Vegan Chef

Two former executives from McDonald’s have joined forces with celebrity chefs Art Smith and Tal Ronnen to create a menu for a new chain of healthy restaurants that will be very vegan-friendly, Lyfe Kitchen. The first Lyfe restaurant will open in Palo Alto, California this summer and the two hope to expand to 250 restaurants serving made to order cuisine like Panera Bread or Chipotle.

Faster food is the only vestige former McDonald’s President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Roberts and former communications boss Mike Donahue are bringing from their old establishment. Besides vegetarian and vegan options, there will be no fried food and every menu item will contain less than 600 calories.

No McHigh Fructose Corn Syrup, McButter or McCream is allowed either.

“USA Today” Says Flexitarians Top Marketing Trend In 2011

A recent USA Today article lists appealing to those who flex eat as a top marketing trend in 2011.

Under a heading titled, “Flexitarians R Us,” the online component to the newspaper states that 47% of consumers are trying to reduce their meat intake and explains who the most flexible people are.

According to Cathy Schneck, vice president of marketing at Kellogg Frozen Foods, which produces MorningStar Farms vegetarian frozen foods, it’s women in their mid-forties.

“The Oprah Winfrey Show” Features Vegan Kashi Products

Kashi Foods were featured today on The Oprah Winfrey Show where several hundred of Oprah’s staff members at Harpo studios went vegan for a week.

Many of you may be familiar with Kashi’s whole grain cereals and breakfast items, but did you know they also make frozen dinners? The Mayan Harvest starring plantains, sweet potatoes, black beans and kale with ancho sauce, pumpkin seeds and polenta is just one of several quick and easy vegan dinners that can be microwaved.
