Mac Danzig Food Voyeurism: You Know You Want Some

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, November 30th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

We know it’s been awhile since you had food voyeurism. Thankfully, we found some to break the dry spell.

Ultimate Fighter Mac Danzig is one super cool vegan athlete proving you don’t need meat to beat the crap out of your opponent. And here’s how he does it.

He’s a big fan of brown rice, portobello mushrooms, and tempeh, as well as quinoa, black beans, and lentils. Although not that into fake meats, Gardenburger “Riblets,” do bring him to his knees.

And what does an Ultimate Fighting Champion and a evening with your girlfriends have in common? Both like to get drunk off sweets.

“I eat a ton of soy ice cream and vegan cookies when I’m not dieting,” Danzig said. “This is my weakness, but my metabolism burns most of it off.” Good thing, otherwise, it would go straight to his thighs. Sigh…

Example of what he might eat during intensive training weeks when he’s really counting calories:

“Salad w/ baby greens, artichoke, olives, mushrooms, high-protein grilled tofu and light goddess dressing. Fresh strawberries and grapes for dessert.”

Of course, this is just a tease. For the full monty, you’ll have to go elsewhere. We just don’t do those kinds of shows here.

John Salley Makes Slam Dunk With Guacamole Recipe

Los Angeles Confidential Magazine's Pre-Emmy Party

Not long ago, NBA basketball legend John Salley made an appearance on Rachael Ray, who is currently our favorite Food Network chef at the moment. Check out the archives to find out why.

Salley became a vegetarian to reduce his cholesterol back in 1991. This week he’ll be cooking a vegetarian Thanksgiving feast to whoever is lucky enough to get invited to his home.

“I cook for Thanksgiving — they don’t even know that they’re not eating meat,” he said as he went on to explain a dish that involved pureeing squash and cauliflower.

The Veg Star has already brought you the news of how he and other African-American celebrities were trying to get the word out to encourage African-Americans to go veg.

Read more about how the episode went and don’t forget to grab the recipe.

Extreme Championship Wrestling Diva Tiffany Goes Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Business.

Diva Tiffany is known to the World Wrestling Entertainment World as the business assistant to Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) General Manager Theodore Long. The ECW is a brand of the World Wrestling Entertainment, along with Raw and SmackDown.

Speaking of raw, Diva Tiffany might be adding more of it to her plate these days. She has announced she has become a complete vegan, after several years of transitioning from meat, then vegetarian, and now absolutely no meat or dairy products. She writes on her blog:

“For the last 3 and a half years, I have been working on a long journey to becoming a Vegan. My first and main reason behind this lifestyle change is the moral and ethical rights of animals. I am speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves. I am a strong proponent for the humane treatment of animals and am making my stand known by not ingesting any animal products whatsoever. That’s right! No meat, no dairy, no eggs…the list goes on. In short, no animal products or animal by-products.”

Diva Tiffany made the decision to cut animal products from her diet after viewing a video on the treatment of animals on farms which made her cry, “for hours after watching.”

Yeah for the Diva. Maybe she can use her business powers to convince some of those WWE wrestlers to follow the footsteps of other hardcore athletes like Ultimate Fighter Mac Danzig and become vegan as well.

Amazing Race Terence And Sarah Get Silenced By Sheep

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 17th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Reality TV.

Reality TV time has ended for the Amazing Race couple with the veggie half, Terence and Sarah. And it ended on a very sour note.

Terence, as you can recall us telling you, has been a vegetarian for 15 years. However, during last night’s aired episode, he and Sarah decided to participate in the “Fast Forward,” challenge without knowing what the “challenge” consisted of. He soon found out that challenge was to eat sheep.

“We sat down in that restaurant and everything they served me made me absolutely ill,” Terence said.

Most would suspect that if you haven’t eaten meat in years and start doing so, you might experience some problems here and there. This was true for Terence as he attempted to eat the sheep, gagging several times, and eventually giving up.

“I can run marathons, I can do triathlons, but I could not swallow that food to save my life,” Terence said to host Phil Keoghan. Interestingly enough, since Terence couldn’t complete the Fast Forward, he had to perform another non-vegetarian task-dressing up as a cow. But they were not able to overcome to delay caused by the Fast Forward competition and ultimately had to say good-bye.

Many vegetarians would not have attempted to eat the sheep, thus compromising their beliefs, even if a million dollars were at stake. Still, in the heat of the moment and coming so far in the race, some, like Terence, may have given it a try (and most likely regretted, due to both physical pain and moral guilt).

But should CBS have done more to accommodate those with restrictive eating habits? And should they have told the couples in advance that eating meat could be a requirement along the race? If someone were allergic to meat, there would probably be no hesitation about offering a meatless substitute for the challenge.

Chime in and give us your thoughts.  Was this fair game or just inconsiderate?

Sushil Kumar Finally Seduced By Peta

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 13th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports.

Olympics Day 12 - Wrestling

Those people at Peta are really good at their “promote vegetarianism with us,” campaign. Their latest conquest is Sushil Kumar (shown in the blue), who won the Bronze medal for wrestling in the Olympics this past summer.

As we told you earlier, Kumar was a wanted man soon after his victory, because Peta found out he was vegetarian. And they wanted to show that Kumar, like other athletes that have worked with them, such as Mac Danzig, proves physical strength and ability can be maintained with a meat-free diet.

Kumar couldn’t resist. He’s agreed to work with them and said in an interview:

“I am a vegetarian myself and I want to send out this message to everyone that vegetarians are powerful, they have the stamina. Look at me, I defeated non-vegetarians from America and Kazakhstan in the Olympics. So, you can see that vegetarians have a lot of strength.”

No details on exactly what Kumar will be doing to work with Peta, whether it’d be PSAs or possibly less than fully dressed adventures.

Way to go for Kumar. And congrats to Peta for one more victory under its belt. We know they’ve got a little black book somewhere they like to brag about.

Daniel Negreanu Gave Tobey Maguire Poker Lessons

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 13th, 2008 in Actors, Athletes-Games-Sports.

WSOP No-Limit Texas Hold 'em World Championship

Poker champ Daniel Negreanu has given poker lessons to several celebrities, including fellow vegetarian Tobey Maguire.

Although Tobey still does occasional dairy, Negreanu went completely vegan in 2003. Wonder if they shared secrets for five bean soup as well as five card draw?

Either Negreanu is a good teacher, Maguire is a good student or both.

Tobey has become quite accomplished, competing and winning in tournaments like World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker. He won first place in the Phil Hellmuth Invitational – No Limit Hold’em 2004 National Championship of Poker in Los Angeles. The prize money was a nice $95,480.

Of course that’s pocket change to an actor that pulls millions from a single movie, but hey, bragging rights are priceless.

The Championships - Wimbledon 2008 Day Thirteen

Martina Navratilova was slamming tennis balls at speeds most of us would only drive if we were taking NASCAR lessons before the days of Venus, Serena, and Maria Sharapova snapping pics of her dog Dolce.

She has supported animal rights and used to be completely vegetarian, then started eating fish because she found it hard to get protein while traveling so much.

Which leads to an interesting question: Is it really that hard to get good veg food away from home, if you don’t bring along a private chef? And are celebrities who claim to switch to a less than completely veg life because of health reasons really trying hard enough?

Sure, it’s hard to find vegetarian/vegan food on the road to purchase sometimes. Not to mention traveling in other countries.  But how many of you guys have packed a protein bar regularly or a Ziploc bag of nuts? It seems that if you’re worth millions, it should be the easiest thing in the world to eat vegetarian and vegan as you have the resources to get any type of meal you want-from healthy prepackaged varieties to a freshly catered full course meal via a personal chef.

Obviously an individual’s diet decision is ultimately a personal one, but is claiming it’s “too hard,” due to traveling or time constraints taking the “easy way” out?

Leilani Munter’s a smart gal (Biology Degree, sure enough!) who served as a Hollywood stunt double before becoming a professional race car driver who mans, or shall we say (wo)mans No. 57 SMART Papers Dallara in the Firestone Indy Lights, which is a part of IndyCar racing.

The self-described vegetarian hippie chick has the same problem finding vegan clothing as actress Lisa Edelstein of House.

On her website, a fan who was also a racer wanted to know where to get non-leather shoes for racing. Leilani responded that she doesn’t know of any currently, and unfortunately, the only time she has to wear leather is when she’s behind the speed demon wheel.

Ah, she feels the pain of lots of vegheads out there trying to keep meat off the feet as well as the fork. But she has a good excuse: Leather has a natural fire resistance, something needed in case of a crash on the track.

Getting protection you need from going around in circles at 200 mph is one thing. Looking cute on the town is another. For all of you who drive 65, check out what Natalie Portman or Frank Iero strut around in.
