Tony La Russa Supports Prop B In Commercial Ad (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 13th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports, Videos.

Tony La Russa has stepped up to the plate to voice his support for Missouri’s Proposition B, which set standards for pet breeders and is meant to reduce some of the negative consequences of puppy mills.

No stranger to animal activism, vegetarian La Russa started an animal shelter after rescuing a cat in the San Francisco Bay area. He appears in a pro-Prop B commercial that was unveiled today.

“Thousands of dogs are crammed into small and filthy cages for their entire lives at these large scale puppy mills,” La Russa says. “No responsible pet owner would ever treat an animal like that.”

Prop B is endorsed by several animal welfare organizations, which appear in the ad, including La Russa’s own Animal Rescue Foundation, Humane Society of Missouri, Humane Society of the United States, Best Friends Animal Society, ASPCA and the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation.

“There is nothing to prepare you for seeing it in person. I saw these beautiful dolphins being driven into the cove, and they came out dead bodies.”

50 Cent And The Rhino–Rapper Asked To Fight Poaching

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 11th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

Rapper 50 Cent has been asked to be a guardian of an endangered rhino in South Africa.

Let’s hope he doesn’t pull a knife on it like he did with his puppy.

eBlockwatch says the rapper and the rhino have much in common, such as the fact they’ve both survived being shot 9 times. Not sure if this is the only reason the group feels 50 is the chosen one for being a godfather, but a spokesperson is sure his fame can influence poaching.

“We want to ask him if he wants to become the godfather of our rhino so that he can create awareness worldwide about rhino poaching.”

Phila has also survived two attempts at removing her horn. During the first attempt, part of it was cut off. 50 Cent’s nose in still intact, though.

Though some may find the rapper’s invitation somewhat humorous, sad statistics on poaching make it hard to cry any tears of joy.

Joe “The Plumber” Wurzelbacher Rants About Proposition B For Breeders

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 8th, 2010 in Animal Issues.

SANDUSKY, OH - OCTOBER 30: Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) (R), Samuel 'Joe the Plumber' Wurzelbacher and Cindy McCain wave goodbye to supporters after a campaign rally at the Gazebo at Washington Park October 30, 2008 in Sandusky, Ohio. With less than a week before the U.S. presidential election, McCain launched a two-day bus tour of the swing state of Ohio, where some polls show his opponent, Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) leading by nine points. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

Joe The Plumber is back, not as the McCain/Palin sidekick, but a supporter of the Tea Party and a group called the Alliance for Truth, who is against changing legislation that would require dog breeders in Missouri to up their care for animals and eliminate breeding practices that are detrimental.

Proposition B will be voted on by Missouri residents in November and Joe The Plumber wants them to know no one should keep a dog owner from leaving a piece of food in the water bowl. Or something like that.

“Missouri’s Proposition B makes it a “crime of cruelty” for a piece of dog food to be in a water bowl or for a dog breeder to treat their own pet if they become ill… (No folks, I don’t make this stuff up.)”

Cesar Millan “The Dog Whisperer” To Feature Wolf-Dog Hybrids

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 8th, 2010 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

Cesar Millan will feature wolf-dog hybrids on “The Dog Whisperer” this season. Produced by breeding a wolf with a particular breed of dog like Akitas, German shepherds, Alaskan Malamutes, and huskies, the wolf-dog half breed combines the genes of a wild and domestic creature, but it’s often the wild genes that are dominant, resulting in destruction to human homes and threats to safety of other creatures surrounding them.

“One thing we have to understand about a wolf, besides the primal side of them, is the physical ability,” Millan said, in an interview with The DCist. “In the jaw of a wolf is the mouth of two pit bulls. A pit bull has 750 psi, pressure, in his jaw. A wolf has 1500 psi in his mouth.”

Citing incidents where these hybrids have killed people and pets, The Humane Society of the United States urges all states to ban private possession of these animals. However, a look at wolfdogalliance.org reveals laws vary tremendously by state, from allowing hybrids to be kept as pets with a license to no regulation at all.

Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell is a year older, and unfortunately, Americans will no longer be able to follow him into his golden years on American Idol now that he’s left the show.

However, animal lovers know Cowell never gave an animal a bad review about its performance, numerously citing his love for pets and being the face behind several campaigns regarding their welfare, such as not leaving dogs in hot cars and working with the World Society for the Protection of Animals in hopes of getting universal protection for them.

PETA decided to celebrate Cowell’s 51st birthday by spaying and neutering 51 animals in their “Spay and Neuter Immediately, Please!” (SNIP) mobile veterinary clinic.
