Beg Rory Freedman

Everyone’s favorite Skinny Bitch has penned a new book on another side to the vegan lifestyle in addition to eating.

Beg: A Radical New Way of Regarding Animals by Rory Freedman is filled with advice on how everyone, from meat eater to raw vegan, can improve the lives of millions of cats and dogs in the world.

In chapter 1, titled “All My Children,” Freedman introduces the reader to the love she has for her pets using the same sass found in the diet books she has co-authored over the years.

“Like every other psychotic dog mom, I could write an entire book about my pack. I adopted the first two, Timber and Joey, with my then boyfriend Reggie (Reggie isn’t his real name. In order to protect his privacy, I’m using the name of his first dog.)

The Today Show recently featured a segment on AKC breeders and how the seal of the organization’s approval doesn’t necessarily equivalate to an animal bred in healthy conditions.

Animal welfare groups such as American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States claim some of these certified breeders are actually raising dogs that are sick, diseased, malnurished and living in filthy conditions.

Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the HSUS says that a breeder’s certification from the AKC is nothing more than a “piece of paper without any value for dog welfare.”

Emmylou Harris

“Instead of protecting animals on farms from abuse, Senate Bill 1248 is a thinly veiled attempt by the agriculture industry to paralyze the efforts of those concerned about the treatment of animals to collect evidence of a pattern of routine cruelty, which has helped officials win convictions against animal abusers around the country, by forcing them to turn over evidence of single instances of abuse almost immediately. … Because there is no government inspection of farms for cruelty violations and because workers who report abuse are frequently ignored, investigations are often the only way to hold farm workers and managers accountable to existing laws.”

Emmylou Harris, in a letter to Tennessee’s governor to veto a bill making it criminal to investigate abuse on farms through the use of undercover filming.

PETA’s president Ingrid Newkirk has a lot on her mind these days.

The recent horse meat scandal, hunting and faux meat are just a few of the issues she discussed with Forbes contributor Michael Charles Tobias.

Newkirk is not just informed and passionate about these animal welfare and food safety concerns.

The Forbes interview demonstrates she can also be quite quirky about them to prove a point.

Such was the case when asked to comment on horse meat making it into the food supply in Britain and other places.
