Bob Barker Meets With Principal Chief To End Bear Displays In NC

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 30th, 2009 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

Bob Barker loves his fans

A letter gets your message across, but there’s nothing like face to face interaction.

Several weeks ago, Bob Barker wrote a letter to the Principal Chief of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation, asking for an end to the caged bear pits that serve as a tourist attraction in Cherokee, North Carolina.

On Tuesday, Bob met with Chief Principal Michell Hicks and five other members of the Tribal council, asking that the caged bears be turned over to an animal sanctuary.

The bears exist in walled enclosures rooted in the ground at three local attractions in Cherokee.

“To think that with as advanced as our civilization is now that there is any place in the United States were bears are kept in pits is just unbelievable,” said Barker. “Just picture yourself, if your life, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, month after month, was in a pit.”

Vegetarian Barker is part Cherokee himself and grew up on a reservation in South Dakota.

Boxing champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley has recorded a PSA against dog fighting.

Incidentally, this was released around the same time convicted dog fighting ringleader Michael Vick was reinstated into the NFL.

“I’m a boxer,” says Mosley. “I fight for a living. My opponents and I know that if you step into the ring, you choose to be there. And if you don’t come out on top, you can at least walk away. Dog fighting isn’t like that. Dogs don’t have the choice. In the end, they get hurt badly or are cruelly killed. Dog fighting is dirty.”

We second that, Sugar.

Watch the PSA above, but be warned, there are some graphic pictures that illustrate just why these PSAs need to be made.

Dutch police have released Peter Janssen, otherwise known as the “vegan streaker.”

Janssen was arrested last week after police received a tip that he was planning to attack Queen Beatrix of Holland because she wears fur.

The 24 year old animal rights activists earned his named as the “vegan streaker” after he made a surprise appearance on a Dutch television show wearing only black briefs and anti-meat slogans painted on his body.

He was released after authorities determined they did not have sufficient evidence to keep him in custody.

A statement said: “The investigation by the national detectives unit has so far not yielded any evidence.”

Janssen is denying the allegations and says he plans to launch a lawsuit for wrongful arrest.

Queen Beatrix has been in the news about fur before when Pamela Anderson wrote a letter asking her to ban it from Holland.

A few days ago we posted the ad showing Blink 182 and Angels and Airwaves musician Tom DeLonge advocating spaying and neutering pets.

Here’s a behind the scenes video of Tom as he’s filming his PSA for PETA’s “Have The Balls To Fix Your Dog” ad.

Spaying and neutering is a great way to prevent thousands of unwanted animals from being euthanized in shelters nationwide.

And besides, you probably spend more on all those soy lattes than you would to get your cat or dog fixed.

“It’s not expensive,” says Tom. “You probably spend way more on coffee, burritos, and alcohol to be honest.”

Not to mention you can search for free or low cost spay and neuter clinics located in a city near you.

Watch the video to see Tom and his dogs Chloe and Grey.

65th Annual Theatre World Awards in New York

The fifth annual Taking Action For Animals conference is wrapping up its last day and several stars showed up for a banquet to share their vegan and animal rights experiences.

Nellie McKay talked about her recently adopted pit bulls, who apparently love to eat some vegan things, because they’ve been chewing on her shoes, which she pointed out to the audience.

Humane Society of the United States president and CEO Wayne Pacelle talked about his decision to work with convicted dog fighting ringleader and ex Atlanta Falcons football player Michael Vick.

And Ginnifer Goodwin discussed how various “moments” like pouring milk over her cereal led to her making the vegan transition.

Tom Delonge is obviously a man of many talents.

Between Blink 182, Angels and Airwaves, Modlife and being the entrepreneur behind MacBeth Shoes, he still finds time to speak up for animals.

Seen here in a spay and neuter your pet ad, Tom poses with his dogs Chloe and Grey to ask everyone to grow some balls-and get their pet fixed.

“It just ends up becoming a really sad state when animals are running around that have no families to be a part of,” said Tom. “Spaying and neutering the animals keeps the happy animals with happy families and doesn’t create too many lonely ones out there.”

Ricky Gervais Gets Criticized By Food Critic For Being Meat Eater

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Comedians.

Night At The Museum 2 world premiere in London

Ricky Gervais is an animal advocate who has starred in public service announcements against using animal pelts in the fashion industry.

However, Gervais, like many other celebrities who partake in animal rights campaigns, eats meat.

He was recently criticized for this by a food critic to which he responded to on his blog.

“I think there is a difference between animals being humanely killed for meat and animals being tortured to death for fun. It’s the ‘enjoying it’ part I don’t understand.”

“I have had several pets put down over the years when they were in pain with no quality of life. It was the right thing to do and yet on every occasion I cried. What a wuss. Next time, I will invite the food critic round… It’s only an animal, it was going to die anyway, may as well have a laugh. It may even become a tradition, and you can never end those.”

We have to give the food critic credit for pointing out Ricky’s obvious moral schizophrenia. Yes, there is a difference between killing animals for fun and killing them for necessity. But most of us don’t live in the wilderness and hunt for our food daily, thus using animals as food is no longer required.

Granted, Ricky has stated before that he’s nearly vegetarian and has been dedicating a lot of thought towards the morality of meat eating.
