Michael Vick Speaks To Youth On Making Good Choices

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports, Videos.

As you know by now, Michael Vick and the Humane Society of the United States have teamed up, for better or worse.

Vick has been making public appearances, talking about the cruel decisions he made to partake in dog fighting and trying to convince teens and youth not to follow the same path.

“At some point, I got sidetracked,” Vick said. “I started listening to my friends and doing some things that were not ethical and not right.”

Vick, who spent 18 months in federal prison for his involvement with dog fighting encourages these high school students to speak up if they know animal cruelty is taking place.

Watch the clip above to hear Vick speak to teens at Nueva Esperanza Academy in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Tweet the Giraffe From “The Zookeeper” Dies Days After Filming

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Film & TV.

Lions On Show Ahead Of London Zoos Late Night Event

A giraffe that took part in filming the comedy The Zookeeper has died just days after wrapping up its final shoot.

Tweet, an 18-year old male giraffe that had also been on the sets of Ace Ventura, Evan Almighty, and Toys R Us ads, collapsed while being fed in his pen last week.

Giraffes can live well into their late 20s.

“It’s an outrage,” said Lisa Wathne, a spokeswoman for PETA. “I don’t think anyone should be surprised.”

PETA had sent a letter to several stars of the film, urging the show to use animation and special effects versus bringing in animals from a supply company, Birds and Animals Unlimited, that had known USDA violations.

This comedy doesn’t have a happy ending at all.

Georges Laraque On Puppy Mills: You Think That’s Funny?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

Boston Bruins v Montreal Canadiens - Game Four

Georges Laraque, hockey player for the Montreal Canadienes, sat down with the globeandmail.com for an interview where he talked about how’s he’s felt since going completely vegan June 1 2009.

A few highlights.

On watching the 2006 movie Earthlings
“It’s unconscionable what’s happening to animals in this country and the way we treat animals we eat. … I realized I had to make some big changes.”

On not buying new leather, but keeping old leather materials
“That would be a further waste. And this way I don’t forget.”

On Vegans Being Skinny
“I’ve lost some weight, but I’ve been working with a really great nutritionist and I’ve never had this much energy. I think it’s also important to break the stereotype that all vegans are skinny people with long hair.”

On Puppy Mills and him being an animal rights activist as funny
“People still think it’s kind of funny, but I’m not doing this to be funny. There are more puppy mills in Quebec than anywhere else in Canada, and no laws to shut them down. People get slapped with a fine and six months later they reopen. Do you think that’s funny?”

Damn, we love this man!

Isabel Lucas Backs Out Like A Baby From “Rights Revoked”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Film & TV.

The Cove Special New York Screening

Isabel Lucas has pulled out of an animal rights documentary titled Rights Revoked, after not being able to get along with her co-star Elissa Sursara.

Wow.

It’s like save the whales, but you can’t use my markers to make your poster.

According to bscreview.com:

“The 24-year-old booming actress cites brewing on-set tensions and personal discomfort for her decision, while Sursara remains on board for the project, something fans of Lucas’ congratulate her for. Said one comment on a News.com.au subsite, ‘I commend Elissa for sticking to her passion for animals and not backing out like a baby.’”

If there’s any reason to get up in the morning to look at someone you don’t like, it’s definitely a higher purpose like animal welfare.

The Transformers star insists she is ensuring the document will be successful, as having many “anger” and “messy emotions” will get in the way of the production.

Lea Michele “Glee” Star: “Buck Cruelty” To Horse Drawn Carriages

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

Lea Michele is hitting all the right notes with this PSA for PETA against horse drawn carriages, Buck Cruelty.

You may recognize Lea from the new Fox hit television show, Glee, but she’s no stranger to acting, as she has several credits on Broadway, including the musical, Spring Awakening.

According to the Coalition To Ban Horse Drawn Carriages, these attractions aren’t good for public or animal safety, and have resulted in both people and horses getting injured.

And horses sustain joint injuries and other medical problems as a result of pounding the street pavement for long hours in adverse weather conditions.

Sounds like a Broadway show no one would want to attend.

Ellen DeGeneres Adds Animal Love To American Idol Judges Panel

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 14th, 2009 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

The 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards at The Orpheum Theatre in LA

By now you’ve heard the news that American Idol officials have finally found Paula Abdul‘s replacement, Ellen DeGeneres.

Shocked, disappointed, excited-regardless of your feelings about Ellen as a judge, one thing’s for sure: she’ll be bringing a warm heart for animals to the judge’s table.

A vegan and activist who has championed causes like Prop 2 and given away vegan items on her television show, Ellen now makes one more animal advocate along with Simon Cowell.

Simon’s not vegetarian (Ellen, bring your vegan seitan wings to the rehearsals), but he’s been outspoken on animal welfare, including a PSA urging dog owners never to leave their four legged friends locked in a car.

Simon even said he sensed vegetarian Carrie Underwood‘s kindness when she walked into her audition and mentioned putting items about how potential Idol contestants treated animals on the audition questionnaire.

And let’s not forget, Kara Dioguardi reminded everyone to take good care of their dogs too.

Now if only we could get Randy Jackson to get naked in the name of being fur-free.

Last week we brought you Seattle Seahawks Aaron Curry‘s PSA against dog chaining.

Here’s a video clip of Aaron and his dogs Laila and Ali, with Aaron explaining why he wanted to get involved with the PSA.

“I felt like dogs deserve the same respect as a human being,” Curry said. “How would you feel if you were chained up in the backyard all day.”

Laila was given to Aaron as a birthday gift recently, and Ali was rescued from a shelter.
