Isabel Lucas is a vegetarian and animal rights activist who’s views have even gotten her arrested on occasion, such as the time she protested against the dolphin slaughter in Japan.

Years ago, she wasn’t as outspoken about her beliefs.

Until an incident with a frog changed that.

When she was 10, Isabel saw a boy torture a frog to death.

“I was shocked and upset with myself for not saying anything,” Isabel said. “I felt so guilty and furious afterwards.

“From then on, I thought if anything like that happens again, I’m going to say something. I’m grateful to him for that experience – that’s how you learn, through your mistakes.”

“I do feel I am in a unique position where I can use my public status to draw attention to things that matter to me and hopefully a lot of other people as well.”

Actress Maria Menounos at the Climate Rally Earth Day Concert in Washington

Maria Menounos will host the first annual Ferdinand’s Ball, which kicks off the Kentucky Derby on Thursday, April 29.

Proceeds from the ball will directly benefit Old Friends, a non-profit organization that rescues retired racehorses from neglect, abuse and slaughter.

The event will feature a four-course vegetarian meal, athletes and local politicians, a silent auction, live entertainment and a presentation of an award to the Humane Society of the United States for their contribution to equine welfare.

For more information, visit the organization’s website.

Ferdinand was a 1986 Kentucky Derby winner who made millions and ended up in a slaughter house after being sent to Japan.

It’s fantastic that these horses can retire in comfort, but it’s questionable whether horse racing should be allowed to begin with.

According to In Defense of Animals, about 800 race horses die each year from fatal injuries on U.S race tracks and approximately 3,500 sustain injuries so bad they cannot finish the race.

IDA also states that many state governments are hesitant to prosecute abusers in the industry because they share revenue.

Lea Michele Shares Mom’s Vegan Friendly Lasagna Recipe (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 26th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Recipes, Videos.

Lea Michele recently became a vegan, but that doesn’t stop the Italian Glee actress from enjoying a plate of lasagna.

“I’m part of a traditional Italian family, so when I became a vegan, my mother learned how to make a version of lasagne I could still enjoy,” Lea said. “The idea of possibly going through the rest of my life without eating it was very upsetting!”

Lea is sharing her mother’s recipe for vegetable lasagna roll ups in the May issue of InStyle.

Vegan lasagna is incredible easy to make.

Substituting dairy cheese for a soy version like Chicago Soy Dairy’s “Teese” or Follow Your Heart “Vegan Gourmet” or “Tofutti” is the quickest way.

For a soft, more traditional ricotta cheese, soft or silken tofu seasoned with plum vinegar and soy sauce give taste alike versions even a non vegan would enjoy.

Eden Organic has a vegetable lasagna that utilizes such a tofu ricotta in one of their many recipes online.

Alicia Silverstone spoke at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books this past weekend where she promoted her vegan lifestyle and diet cookbook, The Kind Diet.

She revealed that wearing a maternity suit while acting in the play Time Stands Still, was fun, and that she can’t wait to get pregnant.

“I’ve been wanting to have a baby since I was 2 years old – I’m destined to be a mother,” she said.

When she finally is carrying child, Silverstone is sure discuss details of her pregnancy, including how it affects her vegan cravings.

Bet she’ll even make her own vegetarian baby food, something a registered dietitian from Vegetarian Resource Group says is easy to do and includes recipes for suggestion on the group’s website.

Given the fact that so many female vegetarian celebrities complain of and give into meat cravings, it will be refreshing to hear the nine month experiences of a staunch vegan activist who will most likely not cave like the rest.

Laura Benanti and Michael Cerveris will unite for a one night only reading of The Naked Genius by Gypsy Rose Lee to benefit the Mint Theatre Company at Caroline’s on Broadway in New York City.

According to the Mint Theatre, “The Naked Genius, tells the story of a burlesque performer named Gypsy Rose Lee — author of a recently published memoir entitled ‘I’ll Bare All.’ The cast of characters includes her manager, her mother, her publisher, four Chihuahuas and Ramona the Baby Chimp. It’s a sweet farce about the struggle Gypsy faces between her desire for respectability and her burlesque roots.”

Gypsy Lee may have been the original PETA poster girl, as she was active in animal rights, as well as took her clothes off as burlesque dancer before she began her career as a writer.

Unfortunately, as Mint points out, these parts of her life are only touched on slightly in the play.

When Natalie Portman decided to launch her line of vegan shoes with Te Casan, she collaborated with Via Spiga creative director Paola Venturi.

Venturi had nothing but good words to say about Portman in an interview with Orange County Local News.

“She contacted me at the Te Casan company because she wanted to design a vegan shoe line. She fell in love with the brand and we started to work together on a small collection. She’s fabulous because she has a vision about fashion. She was really directional so it was easy to interpret.”

Unfortunately, some good things do come to an end, and Portman’s shoe line received the boot in 2008 bad economy.
