“Portlandia” Vegan Book Shopping And Best Of 2012 (Video)

Portlandia‘s Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein visited New York City’s independent bookstore Bluestockings with podcaster/comedian Julie Klausner where they had the chance to look and chit chat about a few vegan cookbooks among other works of literature.

January is almost over and it’s hard to believe an entire year has gone by with another round a great vegan books you can find at independent stores, online, secondhand shops and even yard sales.

Woody Harrelson has narrated a new video produced by the Humane Society of the United States that promotes the end of using animals for fur.

The actor, vegetarian, environmentalist and animal advocate said of his cause:

“It’s always difficult for people to deal with images of animal cruelty head-on; no one wants to look at what really goes into the making of fur. This video is so impactful because it lets you know without having to see.”

“I really hope it makes fashion designers and consumers think twice about using and wearing animal fur, when so many great alternatives are available and just as stylish.”

Anderson Cooper invited actor Alan Cumming to his studios of Anderson Cooper Live to discuss New Year’s Resolutions and Cumming’s charities.

Cooper, Cumming and co-host Jill Martin enjoyed a plate of faux chicken tenders during the segment.

Cooper expressed that he would like to become a vegan, but thought the switch would be too hard as he’s used to eating the same dish (presumably meat dish) daily.

Ryan Reynolds narrates a film produced by the Humane Society of the United States about an orca named Luna and the many complex and beautiful traits marine animals like it posesses.

Reynolds spoke with the HSUS on his motivations for contributing his time to The Whale.

He became interested in Luna after his brother–who works as a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman near Nootka Sound where Luna lived–told him his firsthand accounts.

Steve-O has narrated a short film about the intelligence of farmed animals like pigs, cows and chickens.

Produced by Farm Sanctuary, What Came Before is approximately a 10 minute video that also discusses the horrors animals experience on farms, as well as rescue stories.

The film begins with a story about a pig rescued from a farm after strong floods hit Iowa.

“Pigs like Nicky are some of the smartest animals on earth,” Steve-o says.
