SeaWorld Whale Deaths–Whales Die Young And Regularly

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 5th, 2010 in Animal Issues.

ORLANDO - FEBRUARY 24: The sign at the entrance to SeaWorld February 24, 2010 in Orlando, Florida. A female trainer who presumably slipped and fell in to a holding tank was fatally injured after she was attacked by an orca. This is the third human death associated with the killer whale according to the Humane Society of the United States. (Photo by Matt Stroshane/Getty Images)

The recent deaths of three killer whales at SeaWorld certainly do nothing to appease animal rights activists who already view the marine park as an unsafe environment for the whales and people.

In the past 4 months, there have been three deaths–a 25 year old female, a 20 year old female and a 12 year old male. The exact cause of the most recent death is still under investigation, while officials have determined that the 20 year old died from complications giving birth.

OPI "Pink of Hearts"

OPI "Pink of Hearts"

OPI, a nail lacquer company that does not test on animals, created a pink polish in 2007 to be promoted during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October every year. This year, according to App.com, the company made a $25,000 donation to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Besides being cruelty-free, (with some OPI polishes rumored to be vegan), the company has taken steps to make its products greener over the years.

Beginning in 2006, OPI started to reformulate its Nail Lacquers, Nail Treatments, and Nail Hardeners to remove the DBP (dibutyl phthalate) and Toluene. According to Safecosmetics.org, these 2 chemicals have functional and aesthetic uses, but have been shown to be toxic to humans.

“Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) adds flexibility and a moisturizing sheen, and helps dissolve other cosmetic ingredients. DBP is a reproductive and developmental toxin that has been linked to feminizing effects in baby boys.”

Nellie McKay has an extensive interview with Broadway World where she spills her heart on issues like animal rights and global warming, vegan food, favorite celebrities and that never going away topic of Lady Gaga‘s meat dress.

A song on her latest CD, Home Sweet Mobile Home, titled “Unknown Reggae,” is about animals being consumed for meat.

“For animal rights, it would be “Unknown Reggae” on the new record. It is about the meat, in particular. But, animal products – including dairy and eggs, although I know it is difficult to get off of them – that’s the quickest way to end global warming. It really has a terrible impact on the earth, eating higher up on the food chain like that. If we went back to the basics of vegetables, legumes, grains – the things closer to the earth – it’s a lot better for the earth and for other people. We can feed more people, we can feed the starving people.”

Growing up in her Italian family, actress Lea Michele‘s meals must have consisted of lots of formaggio, but no carne.

Even though today she’s pretty much vegan, the Glee star also confesses she’s never eaten a piece of red meat in her life. Michele, who was scheduled to get a glimpse of Stella McCartney‘s vegetarian fashions in Paris, France recently, said, “I do a lot of work with PETA. I’m mostly vegan and I’ve never eaten red meat, so a brand that is beautiful without harming animals is my idea of fashion-forward.”

You could say she already had a significant lighter footprint before she gave up other animal products. While it’s ideal to give up all meat, just giving up red meat can have a major beneficial impact on the environment.

Good.is recently highlighted a graph included in a paper by Weber and Mathews of Carnegie Mellon University, which lists the impact of various forms of food and beverage on the environment, from the production to delivery to retail end. From the graph below, you can see that red meat produces more carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane emissions.
