Rich Karlgaard, publisher of Forbes magazine since 1998, pays his premiums to the best health care plan in the world–a vegan diet.

Karlgaard took to his blog to discuss how eating mostly vegan helped him shed pounds and shared his thoughts on what the typical vegan is like.

It’s not just for the hippies, you know. Even the three piece suits on Wallstreet can enjoy soba noodles.

“The notion of a vegan diet is repellent to a lot of men and especially conservative men,” Karlgaard said. “If you’re like me, your mental picture of a “vegan” might be that of an eco-hippie or a PETA purist or someone who eschews deodorant as well as meat. That’s increasingly inaccurate.”

Along with the stereotype of vegan men, Karlgaard bashes the notion all veggies live in southern California.

One well known vegan book by Rip Esselstyn proves that.

“If you want to learn more about vegan diets without the annoying eco-lecture that often goes with it, I recommend The Engine 2 Diet. The author is a former pro triathlete and now a firefighter in Texas.”

“Vegans in Texas? Heck, yes.”

Blake Lively wore a pair of thigh high faux leather Stella McCartney boots to the launch party of the book, You Know You Want It: Style Inspiration Confidence by Eric Daman.

Damon is the costume designer for Gossip Girl.

These boots look so snug and comfy, they must feel like second skin.

It’s great that Lively chose to wear Stella’s cruelty-free fashion, instead of taking another animal’s skin.

This completely makes up for Blair and Serena making fun of seitan months ago.

Wonder if Daman is just as ethical on the set of Gossip Girl.

A recent episode of Brothers & Sisters titled “Run Baby Run,” had Rachel Griffith‘s character, Sarah Walker, discussing with a coffee date how she talked her daughter into switching back from vegan to vegetarian.

“She declared herself a vegan,” Sarah said.

“I negotiated her back up to a vegetarian. It’s not that I don’t respect her moral choice, I just don’t know what to feed her.”

Hmm…Seems strange that an MBA holding woman, co-president of a food company and owner of Greenatopia, a website about eco-friendly living can’t figure out what to feed her vegan daughter.

Let’s not forget that brief stint she had as CFO at a green foods startup company.

It’s high time Sarah Walker put as much energy investing in vegan cookbooks as she does in the business world.

And can Ojai Foods get more ready made vegan products?

Humane Society Of The United States

The Humane Society International, a division of the Humane Society of the United States,  has assembled a plan to respond to animals affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

A team of veterinarian experts are expected to enter the Port au Prince area in the next 48 hours.

Representing the HSI will be both the HSUS and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association.

Both groups are partnering with a group in the Dominican Republic, Veterinary Care & Humane Services, Caribbean Project (VCHS).

An update from the HSUS website:

“Our HSI/HSUS/HSVMA field responders include a French-speaking veterinarian and a paramedic trained in disaster response and animal handling. They will be accompanied by two veterinary technicians from VCHS and a translator. The team will provide immediate animal care as it can, and also assess conditions for animals in the capitol city and surrounding areas. As circumstances permit, our experts will also advise emergency and relief workers on extra steps they might take in the coming days to alleviate the suffering of animals while the desperate work to help the island’s human population continues.”

For those that choose the vegan path or with intolerance/sensitivity to dairy products, Alicia Silverstone recommends a cow-free butter on her Kind Life website to substitute on baked potatoes, cookies and more.

If you need to brush up on your veggie cooking skills, chef Christina Pirello is offering several classes that give veg love in the city of brotherly love.

The same chef who brought you better sex tips offers three different culinary programs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States: demonstration classes, a three-day Intensive Study Program and a six-month Cooking and Integrative Health Studies Program.

The classes cover topics such as kitchen utensils and menu planning to complete lifestyle assessments to help students make healthy decisions away from the dinner table.

Pirello’s book, Cooking The Whole Foods Way, was recently chosen as one of the top 5 cookbooks of the decade by the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine.

That’s why Paul McCartney put a copy of his narrated PETA DVD, Glass Walls in each of the presenters and nominees bags at the Golden Globes, according to Contact Music.

The video provides an inside look of the meat industry.

“I’ve often said, ‘If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian,” McCartney said.

“Animals raised on modern factory farms and killed in slaughterhouses endure almost unimaginable suffering. I hope that once you see the routine cruelty involved in raising, transporting, and killing animals for food, you’ll join the millions of people who have decided to leave meat off their plates – for good.”

Could McCartney convert some Golden Globe attendees?

Kim Kardashian swore off real fur, but there was a time when her hide wearing ways got her more publicity than she asked for, according to Buddy TV.

“Someone threatened to kill me if they found me wearing fur again. Was it real fur? I think so, yes. They kept writing and saying, ‘Why are you wearing this?’ It was crazy and scary.”

Other frightening experiences for the self professed Armenian Princess include multiple marriage proposals.

“I get a lot of marriage proposals on Twitter, which are weird. I was reading one this morning. I have no idea how many I’ve had.”

Kim’s taken a compassionate route and wears faux fur now.

Bet it comes in handy when trying to hide her identify when spotted by a Twitter  suitor.
