A Single Man - UK Premiere - Inside Arrivals

“It’s shocking and disturbing. Everyone should know what’s going on in the food industry. It’s not about being a vegetarian or about eating meat. It’s about everyone joining together to change things.”

—-vegetarian fashion designer Stella McCartney (as quoted by Bloomberg), on the film Food Inc., which educates on the industrial production of food.

Dennis Kucinich & MPs Mark The 4th Anniversary Of Iraq War

Michelle Obama recently spoke about her initiative  to reduce obesity rates in children.

The administration is requesting $10 million dollars over the next decade to improve the school lunch program, which includes making more fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products available.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine advocates a vegan diet, and two of its representatives, nutritionist Kathryn Strong and public affairs director Elizabeth Kucinich, the wife of representative Dennis Kucinich, have offered their insights.

Strong suggested that subsidies to the meat and dairy industries be cut. If these higher fat meat and cheese items aren’t as cheap, they may be less likely to be included as a regular option in schools.

Kucinich emphasized the value of healthy foods as preventative medicine for obesity related illnesses like diabetes.

“What is the cost to the nation if we don’t [consider it]?” she said, according to the Epoch Times.

Kucinich also emphasized that for some low-income children, the school meal might be the only meal they eat.

Dairy sensitivities and/or lactose intolerance is common in minority groups that are often over- represented in low income school districts.

A carton of soy milk replacing 2% on the lunch tray may give schools a better report card in future semesters.

Jason Solomons at The Guardian‘s Film Weekly interviewed director Robert Kenner and author of Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser to discuss Kenner’s documentary on corporate involvement in mass produced food, Food Inc.

The issue of how people may be unaware of where food comes from or how it is produced was mentioned.

“My country life butter does not come from a small maid churning away?” Solomons asked sarcastically.

Probably not, but Solomons should never give up looking.

A podcast of the discussion can be heard here.

Carrie Underwood Celebrity Impact On Animal Charities

Super Bowl XLIV Pregame Show

When it comes to giving back, time is good, but dollars may even be better!

The Daily Beast profiled several celebrities who, through lending their name and face to campaigns and even personal donations, have contributed to their favorite charities.

Vegetarian Carrie Underwood is a featured giver for her donations to the Humane Society, which The Daily Beast estimated to have an annual impact of $236,021.

“The country-music star recently gave $200,000 to the Humane Society, taken from the sales of her recording of the Mötley Crüe song, “Home Sweet Home.” May no good deed go unpunished: Underwood’s ties to the animal-protection group angered hunters. “It is a radical organization that seeks to end hunting and other responsible uses of animals in America,” griped one leading sportsman. After Katrina, Underwood, 26, recorded a television spot for the Humane Society, detailing the plight of pets hurt by the hurricane.”

Of course, you don’t have to be a celebrity to have an impact.

Do you plan to donate your time to an animal organization in your town?

Thandie Newton Vegan Detox Diva

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, February 14th, 2010 in Actresses.

'2012' Los Angeles Premiere

Thandie Newton‘s personal assistant is more useful than her husband.

Or, at least she finds time to speak to the assistant more often.

“She’s my right hand woman,” Newton said. “I hate to say it but we may actually text and speak more than my husband and I!”

According to Contact Music, she told Cosmopolitan magazine: “The most embarrassing thing I’ve asked her to do was to deliver some food for me last week on a shoot. I’m currently doing a detox and I feel like such a diva – not only having food delivered to the set, but also the fact that it was raw, vegan, had to be eaten within 24 hours… all this c**p!”

So much interaction between the two would obviously cause an occasional disagreement, but who would suspect a lover of compassionate food would be so mean to her assistant?

“We’re also very rude to each other on text – I called her a lying b***h the other day! If anybody read a transcript without knowing us, they’d think we were crazed!”

What was lying bitch assistant untruthful about?

The percentage of organic ingredients in Thandie’s protein bar?

Catherine Zeta Jones Tops PETA Worst Dressed Celebrity List

Broadway Opening Of "A Little Night Music" - After Party

Catherine Zeta Jones has been named Worst Dressed Celebrity of 2010 by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Catherine won the dishonor for her collections of fur and other animal hide attire.

In a statement to Access Hollywood, PETA said, ““With her creepy cow-skin pants, ugly fox coat, and icky alligator bag, Catherine Zeta-Jones looks like she’s working her way through Noah’s ark with a knife. Maybe she’s trying to get into character for an upcoming role as a serial killer — or a taxidermist.”

Do you agree with PETA’s top pick?

Or should it have been Jennifer Lopez, who PETA nicknamed “Jenny from the Butcher block.”

Katy Perry Sister Punishes Pepperoni Eating “Kissed A Girl” Star

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, February 13th, 2010 in Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Katy Perry arrives at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles

Katy Perry has a fish eating vegetarian sister, who’ll waste no time giving her the smackdown  if she catches her eating other meat.

“My sister makes me watch what I eat. She’s a pescatarian, a vegetarian who eats fish, and she’s lost so much weight from being that. She’ll scream at me if some of the crew on my tour get hot pizza for a snack and I want some. Sometimes I can grab a slice, but if my sister sees me, I get a verbal lashing! I eat secretly in the corner – my one pepperoni slice.”

Hopefully, this will keep Katy, the aspiring vegetarian who can’t give up chicken, in line.

Otherwise, little sis might have to break out the leather-free belt for a good whipping!
