Vegetarian Star

Missing was her foodie pal Mario Batali as Gwyneth Paltrow took another trip “On The Road Again,” this time to the southern United States.

Gwyneth visited Nashville, Tennessee for a few months in a quest to eat, drink, enjoy incredible culture and meet friendly people.

In the latest edition of her newsletter Goop, Gwyneth says a restaurant called “The Family Wash” has a vegetarian Shepherd’s pie worth the road or plane trip.

“This bar is as cozy and intimate as could be; it has a worn-in, comfortable feel to it. There is a low stage in the back for all the musicians that come through playing bluegrass, country and rock. The Vegetarian Shepherd’s pie is spectacular, made of layers of perfectly seasoned lentils, mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese.”

Traditional shepherd’s pie usually contains ground beef or lamb.

Although The Family Wash serves items for meat eaters too, it definitely is a place to eat with mixed company, as there are other veggie friendly items on the menu like hummus and salad with quinoa.

Scott Pilgrim V. The World Movie Poster

The official Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World movie poster has been released.

The movie, based on the comic book series by Bryan Lee O’Malley,  stars Michael Cera and centers around the title’s character trying to win a girl’s heart while fighting off her seven evil ex boyfriends.

Mixing fantasy with traditional romance, one of the exes, Todd Ingram, is a vegan with superpowers he uses to fight Scott.

Normally, Vegetarian Star would be rooting for the vegan, but he supposedly cheats occasionally with gelato.

Dom Partners is auctioning off the domain name “Sex.com” and animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is looking to get in on the, um, “action.”

PETA is hoping the organization will donate the website to the group, which will automatically draw tons of traffic to the site that will promote sex, illustrating how a vegetarian diet can only make it better by using saucy script and humorous eroticism.

From PETA:

“Visitors to sex.com would be exposed to PETA’s saucy campaigns, which point out, for example, the following:

• Meat-loving men tend to limp through their later years thanks to their artery-clogging diets.
• Nobody likes an eight-second ride.
• Many Hollywood hardbodies are hardnosed about not exploiting animals for their flesh and fur.”

PETA currently uses a domain called “meat.org,” which employs similar tactics in that web users who might be looking for information on meat are surprisingly educated about factory farming.

Morrissey isn’t into the artworks of Damien Hirst, and he let Interview Magazine know it.

Hirst is famous for using dead animals preserved in formaldehyde for his…masterpieces.

Yeah, it all sounds so breathtaking.

Morrissey had nothing but good things to say about Hirst, including the fact that Hirst should have his head “kept in a bag” for the way he uses dead animals.

According to Contact Music, Morrissey said, “I dislike the ‘use’ of animals in art, such as in the work of Damien Hirst… Dead butterflies, cows, horses, humans, sheep and sharks – it reads like the inventory of a funerary Noah. How many halved calves suspended in formaldehyde does the world need? To my way of thinking, none.”

Hirst should leave the preserving to Smuckers, right?

Paul McCartney is voicing his support for a fur ban in Israel.

A bill proposed by the animal rights group Let The Animals Live, is asking Israel to be the first country to ban the sale, import and export of any kind of fur.

“I, along with members of my family, have been long-standing opponents of the commercial fur trade,” Paul said. “The reason for this is simple — fur is cruel and unnecessary . . . To skin an animal alive — as many are — for a product nobody needs is beyond comprehension.”

“By banning such a cruel industry, Israel would provide a shining example in care and compassion that others would be sure to follow,” he added.

PETA took a poll with the International Anti-Fur Coalition and found that almost 80% of Israelis disagreed with wearing fur for fashion.

However, Heeb magazine has offered its satirical take on this.

The website features pictures of Jewish men wearing fur hats with captions such as “Nothing is more comfortable than wearing my fur hat in Jerusalem. In summer” and “An animal may have died, but my giant head feels super holy as well as “This thick layer of animal hair protects the deep Talmudic thoughts in my brain.”

Heeb questions whether Hasidic Jews are ready to give up their fur hats.

As long as there is faux…it can happen!

Scarlett Johansson is giving Michelle Obama backup by urging lawmakers to adopt changes to school lunch menus to include healthier items like fruits and vegetables.

Mrs. Obama has been busy promoting her anti-obesity campaign, and there is legislation in the works asking schools to use more plant based meals with less milk and less fat.

“I am so thankful that the National Lunch Program exists and helps children around the nation get enough to eat. But right now, many of the foods served through this program do not support children’s healthy development. Many students who eat school lunches consume too much saturated fat and cholesterol and not enough fruits and vegetables. Childhood obesity is striking young children like never before, and being overweight puts kids at risk for type 2 diabetes and other chronic diabetes.”

Ecorazzi reports that a press release states Scarlett grew up with little means, and knows firsthand how difficult it can be for children who might get their only decent meal from a school cafeteria.

Moby has accumulated a lot of titles in his forty something years, and he now has the pleasure of adding one more-book editor.

The vegan musician, singer, DJ and activist spoke to Oregon Live about his new book, Gristle, filled with essays by those with a passion for food, animals and the environment.

People know you primarily for your music. Why was it important for you to do a project like “Gristle”?

I was raised by activists. My parents and the people in my family brought me up with the idea that the only way to lead a good and productive life was to be a voice for causes and issues that you find important. I’ve been involved with animal rights movement for about 25 years, and I found that when I talked to people, most of my friends weren’t aware of the ramifications and consequences of animal production. The idea behind the book was to make it as factual and revealing as possible.

In reading the book, the environmental issues struck me hard. As a consumer, it makes me feel overwhelmed. Can the individual decisions we make every day really have any impact?

Clearly, one individual’s choices aren’t going to have that much impact, but it’s the cumulative weight of all of our choices. If you and I become vegans, the global consequences aren’t going to be that much. But if we can get a few hundred million people to become a little more aware and cut back on their animal consumption, the consequences will be great.
