Author Margaret Atwood is touring seven countries to promote her new book The Year of The Flood and to raise money for Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

Working for the birds has made Margaret go partially vegetarian-at least no feathered and furry friends.

Check out this portion of the interview from bloomberg.com.

Anderson: I hear you’ve turned vegetarian for the tour.

Atwood: Yes, I’ve themed myself, though I shouldn’t use the term vegetarian because I’m allowing myself gastropods, crustaceans and the occasional fish. Nothing with fur or feathers, though.

Anderson: And you’re drinking only shade-grown, bird- friendly organic coffee?

Atwood: I’m lugging around some Gorilla Coffee that I got in Brooklyn, and I just got presented tonight with a British kind, from the Monmouth Coffee place in Covent Garden. If you say you’re looking for this stuff, somebody’s going to tell you where it is. Ask and it shall be told unto you.

Anderson: Do you have an eco vice you’d care to confess?

Atwood: We sailed here on the QE2. Going on a boat tour is an eco vice, though we are carbon offsetting it through this company called Zerofootprint. But you could say, “Well, my worst eco vice is breathing.” Every time you do it, you’re letting out carbon dioxide.

Jason Schwartzman: A “Bored To Death” Non Practicing Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 18th, 2009 in Film & TV, Food & Drink.

HBOs Bored To Death Premiere

There’s a new HBO comedy starring Jason Schwartzman that’s sure to keep you laughing so hard on Sunday night, you’ll forget tomorrow’s a work day.

Bored To Death features Schwartzman playing a character named Jonathan who’s girlfriend has just moved out because Jason was less than the ideal man.

“My girlfriend broke up with me because she says I smoke too much pot and drink too much white wine. But she’s right! How can you love someone if you’re in a fog all the time?”

Jonathan is also vegan-but is currently not attending services regularly.

“You know, we really should all be vegans,” Schwartman says in one episode. “I’m kind of a nonpracticing vegan.”

In real life Schwartzman loves to devour vegan cupcakes from BabyCakes bakery in NYC.

As owner Erin McKenna told us, “The first time a celebrity made it known how fond he was of BabyCakes was Jason Schwartzman. He came in once by himself the first time and then brought a whole gang of friends with him and had an eating contest in here. He was going crazy over everything–it was really fun!”

Catch the Bored to Death premiere this Sunday, September 20 at 9PM on HBO.

If you were a fan of alternative female rockers of the 90s, you probably remember Sarah Betten from K’s Choice, known for their haunting and melodic song, I’m Not An Addict.

Betten and her band mates will be in Asheville, North Carolina recording some new tunes and there are a couple of hot spots she likes to frequent, Mellow Mushroom and Earth Fare.

“We’ll definitely have to go to Mellow Mushroom,” Betten told charletteobserver.com. “There’s a great vegetarian place that I know I’ll hit a couple times. Earthfare’s close to the studio.”

If you head to Asheville, after picking up your pizza from Mellow Mushroom, you can swing by Earth Fare to stock up your home or apartment with natural and organic foods.

Some cool facts about Earth Fare, from its website.

1. Earth Fare became the first supermarket to ban high fructose corn syrup in 2004.

2. Earth Fare also removed all products with hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oils from its shelves 13 years ago-before everybody caught onto the trans fat bandwagon.

Legally Blonde fans put your Broadway shoes on.

Legally Blonde is currently touring the country with performance dates going through Spring of 2010.

If you remember the Reese Witherspoon goes to law school comedy, you remember her Paris Hilton-like handbag dog sidekick, Bruiser.

And the fact that Elle and Bruiser are both “Gemini Vegetarians.”

You don’t have to make a perfect score on the LSAT to know vegetarian dog food is available for your little Bruiser, Tito, or Max.

Vegan dog foods like V-Dog are available to pet owners interested in filling their pup with high protein plant based alternatives.

Because for some of man’s best friends, meat is totally optional.

Bet Bruiser wished those pink outfits were optional too.

Jennifer Aniston Wants Mexican Restaurant: We Suggest Sin Carne

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 17th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Videos.

So if you watched Late Night With Conan O’Brien Tuesday, you might have heard Jennifer Aniston mention she’s interested in starting her own Mexican Restaurant.

We think she should take the plunge and make a vegetarian Mexican restaurant.

Beans, rice and vegetables make up a good portion of the Mexican Diet.

And texturized vegetable protein, faux chicken or pork taste so similar to meat, customers would never miss the real thing.

Chrissie Hynde was able to build a successful Italian vegan eatery, The Vegiterranean, in a meat eating Midwestern town and says mostly meat eaters frequent it.

Jen would have no problem selling Mexican meatless.
