Woody Harrelson Turned Vegan To Cure Acne, Mucus In Throat

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink.

"Defendor" Screening - TIFF 2009

Women have quite the control over men.

Thom Yorke went vegetarian because he wanted to impress some cute chick.

And actor Woody Harrelson said he went vegan because a woman told him it would clear up his pretty face.

“The first thing was dairy,” Harrelson told Maxim magazine.

“I was about 24 years old and I had tons of acne and mucus. I met some random girl on a bus who told me to quit dairy and all those symptoms would go away three days later. By God she was right.”

That lady should be asking for royalties, considering all money Woody’s made from his beautiful clear face.

Quite a radical change from a former burgers and steak man.

“It’s been at least 20 years. I used to eat burgers and steak, and I would just be knocked out afterward; I had to give it up. ”

Can Nicole Lapin Be A Honey Eating Vegan?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 in Food & Drink, Journalists.

Target Presents Variety's Power Of Youth Event - Inside

Veganism is supposed to include diet and lifestyle, so presumably, a vegan who wore leather really isn’t “vegan” according to some strict standards.

Journalist Nicole Lapin, who calls herself a vegan, recently said she does eat honey.

Is Nicole really not a vegan for eating honey?

According to a definition of veganism from vegetus.org:

“Veganism is a way of living which excludes all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom, and includes a reverence for life. It applies to the practice of living on the products of the plant kingdom to the exclusion of flesh, fish, fowl, eggs, honey, animal milk and its derivatives, and encourages the use of alternatives for all commodities derived wholly or in part from animals (Stepaniak).”

Although honey is not a product extracted from the bee itself, bees do produce it for their own food.

And beemakers force bees to make excess amounts of honey, so they’ll have food left after the honey is harvested.

Is this exploitation?

When bees aren’t producing enough, beekeepers give them supplements, usually mixed with sugar and water.

Blah! That’s like replacing the gourmet almond spread with generic brand peanut butter!

But most vegans who don’t consume any other animal derived or made product except honey don’t want to call themselves just vegetarian.

And those occasional fish eaters will stand by their vegetarianism.

Is it time to create sub definitions for vegan and vegetarian?

Fun’s Idea Of Fun Is Wasteful, Dangerous

Aim & Ignite

The Indie band Fun, who’s album, Aim & Ignite, was released last month, call themselves the pranksters.

But it sounds like Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost and Jack Antanoff pull pranks that are not so cool.

“Early on the tour, Jack and I decided we’d form a prank team,” Dost told Spinner.com. “We gave everyone codenames. For our first prank, we had a half-eaten vegetarian burrito from Chipotle. We threw it in a bag and lit it on fire, like a bag of s— on somebody’s doorstep. We were at a venue and tricked our drummer to stomp on it. That night, our two hotel rooms started prank calling each other.”

Throwing a fired lit item on someone’s doorstep is not just uncool, it’s dangerous.

And who wastes a perfectly good half of vegetarian burrito?

5th Annual TV Land Awards - Arrivals

Actress Mackenzie Phillips is supposed to reveal a big secret during her appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show Wednesday to promote her book, High on Arrival.

The daughter of the Mamas and the Papas founder John Phillips has a half brother named Tamerlane, who is a self-described “peace-loving vegetarian.”

However, Tamerlane wasn’t too peaceful when speaking about his half sister and her family.

Tamerlane, also a fan (as is definitely evident below) of yoga, told Page Six:

“My family is and always will be a decrepit bowl of dog urine compared to Nityananda of Ganeshpuri. That is how great Nityananda is,” Tamerlane said of the Indian yogi who died in 1961. “Worship Nityananda, not the Phillips family. Nityananda can protect you,” said Tamerlane.

Not sure of Tamerlane’s last statement, but following the diet he follows can definitely protect you-at least from health problems like disease.

Packers A.J. Hawk Talks Black Bean Burgers, The China Study

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

Green Bay Packers vs Philadelphia Eagles - October 2, 2006

Green Bay Packers lineman A.J. Hawk is really into his black beans lately.

His favorite place to consume them is at Kavarna, a vegetarian coffee house in downtown Green Bay, Wisconsin.

“It’s awesome,” Hawk told espnmilwaukee.com. “I’m all about the black bean burger. It’s great. I’m telling you. Or the southwestern wrap – it’s the black bean burger with vegetables, all cut up. I’d eat it every day if I could. (Strength and conditioning coach) Mark Lovat goes there a lot. He lives right by there, so he turned me onto it. It’s cool. Every once in awhile they’ll have a little dude playing the guitar there, too. Green Bay’s cool in that way.”

If you go to Kavarna’s website, there’s a picture of a little dude with his guitar right now, matter of fact.

Guess the advice from the book Hawk read that links diet and disease later in life, The China Study, really had an effect on him.

“I’m always reading about different nutritional stuff. I’m reading “The China Study” right now. Tony Gonzalez has his own nutrition book now, but this is the book that kind of got him into it. I’m reading that right now.”

Is Hawk just adding more vegetarian meals into his diet like Gonzalez? Or is he going for the touchdown and going veg completely?

We think we know who we’re rooting for this football season!

The Vampire Diaries On The CW: More Phony Vegetarian Suckers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 in Film & TV.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

If you haven’t had enough of this “vegetarian” vampire talk with the Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse sagas, there’s more to satisfy your cravings of blood sucking creatures pretending to be vegetarians just because they don’t eat people.

But people like vampires, whether they eat meat, veggie burgers, or people, and the series premiere of The Vampire Diaries was the most watched in The CW network’s history, drawing 4.8 million viewers, topping 90210‘s 2008 debut, according to Tvguidge.com.

If it’s any consolation, vegetarian vampires, like Stefan pictured on the right, suffer ridicule and are ostracized like human do sometimes.

From tuftsdaily.com:

“The show follows Elena (Nina Dobrev), a tragically beautiful high-school student who has recently suffered her parents’ deaths. She is immediately attracted to Stefan (Paul Wesley), a handsome transfer student with a mysterious air. Of course, Stefan is a centuries-old vampire who refuses to feed on humans and has returned to his hometown for Elena, who is the splitting image of his lost love Katherine. His pursuit is complicated, however, by the arrival of his evil brother Damon (Somerhalder), who has been feeding on townspeople and taunting Stefan about his “vegetarian” status.”

Catch The Vampire Diaries Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW.
