Zoë Kravitz, Anthony Kiedis Sealed Fates With Vegan Dinner

Keep A Child Alive Organization's 5th Annual Black Ball

Several celebrities, including Zoë Kravitz, Slash, Anthony Kiedis, Emily VanCamp, Adrienne Bailon, Danny Masterson and Alan Cumming recently attended a screening of A Sealed Fate, a documentary film /photo exhibit by photographer Nigel Barker for The Humane Society of the US on the lives of baby seals before they are slaughtered.

The event included a vegan dinner celebration, which surely came in handy for vegan Kiedis. It’s not known for sure whether Zoe is a vegetarian, but she’s certainly partaken in vegan grub with mom, Lisa Bonet.

Paris Hilton got to benefit from eating something besides the disgusting beef and cheese sliders she usually enjoys as she was also on the attendee list.

Don’t be fooled, Paris still likes her meat, which is why she made a “special request” to sit next to beefcake hunk Nigel.

Gossip Girls Blair, Serena Diss Seitan: Book Aaron Would Flip

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, January 24th, 2009 in Actresses, Not So Vegetarian.

Gossip Girl catscrap in Brooklyn

Who would’ve thought when we posted the information given by Gossip Girl book series author Cecily von Ziegesar about book Aaron being a vegan that there would be more veggie “gossip” about the show to come.

In the latest scoop, Blair (Leighton Meester) and Serena (Blake Lively) make a joke about seitan, which some people think is a jab at the Brown University hippie vegetarian culture.

Serena: I’m just reading the Brown catalog. Oh, and I ordered a home dreadlocking kit. Wanna meet up later?

Blair: Definitely! Maybe we can get a jump start on your veganism — have some celebratory seitan at Angelica Kitchen?

Serena: I can’t think of anything better…or grosser.

Katie Molinaro, a blogger for the Huffington Post, didn’t think the joke was very funny. She often writes posts on vegetarian/vegan issues and had this to say about the clip:

“Groan. “Gossip Girl” writers, really?…It’s time to grab your Marc Jacobs trench and step outside of the writers’ room for a minute.”

“In addition to being terribly outdated, referring to vegan food as gross shows how uninformed the writers are. There are vegetarian restaurants around the country that are serving innovative and delicious meatless dishes, and Gossip Girl’s hometown of New York City has some of the best. Perhaps before writing another circa 1987 vegan joke, the writers should try the sweet and sour seitan nuggets at Tiengarden in the Lower East Side or the flame-grilled seitan skewers at Blossom in Chelsea or the soul chicken platter at Red Bamboo in Greenwich Village (and Brooklyn, but with the things they write about that borough I don’t think they’re welcome there).”

Molinaro then goes on to nominate the Atkins diet as the new butt of a food joke because of its high fat, greasy red meat content.

Go Katie!  We second the nomination. Go watch the video of the clip in Katie’s post, then tell us what diet or food product you would like to be the butt of the joke.

The 42nd Annual CMA Awards - Show

We already know she’s a Donna Salyers’ Fabulous Fake Fur Girl, but “Don’t You Know” Kellie Pickler’s a Skinny Bitch as well.

The country music star and former American Idol contestant told That’s Fit she packed on almost 30 pounds in less than a year after going on tour with American Idol.

“We were always eating fast food on the road and having late night munchies,” she said. “I gained 28 pounds in less than a year!”

Kellie said she had to learn to “eat right,” and she did so by reading vegan authors Kim Barnouin and Rory Freedman’s Skinny Bitch, a book about the vegan diet and lifestyle.

“I appeared on the Ellen Degeneres show and we chatted about it. She told me about the book Skinny Bitch which was both really enjoyable to read and easy to understand.”

Kellie realizes the importance of following the skinny bitch diet as well: health. Although she lost her unhealthy excess fat, she realizes no diet will create a one size fits all body. She still has and loves her curves.

“I love my curves. No matter how thin I get, I always have my curves.”

Bernard Madoff Even Screwed PETA: Veggie Burger Curses To Him!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 23rd, 2009 in Business.

Barack Obama becomes the 44th President of the United States

It’s recently been unearthed that thousands have lost money in the multi billion dollar Ponzi scheme ran by Bernard Madoff, including famous vegan author John Robbins, who lost his entire life savings.

People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) Bruce Friedrich, vice president for policy and government affairs, found an online inaugural package to bid on that sounded too good to be true. That’s because it was.

The auction on eBay consisted of a great pair of inaugural tickets and a private meeting with the President himself, according to The online Wall Street Journal.

“2009 White House Full Inauguration Tickets VIP Access” was being offered by Chicago-based charity group December Rain, which provides for foster children who have life-threatening medical conditions. The group paid thousands of dollars to investors for tickets to a variety of events, which it then attempted to auction off online.

December Rain representatives invested with Connecticut-based investment firm Fairfield Greenwich which invested with Mr. Madoff. And you know what kinds of rewards those investments reaped.

A week before the inauguration, PETA received an email stating the tickets did not exist. Although the charity promised to reimburse everyone financially involved, it recently had to close its doors after receiving death threats from those that invested.

Some things go great together. So it’s no surprise that the duo sisterly pop group, who has worked with PETA in the past, has created matching pairs of sneakers, one black and one white, that are animal friendly.

Another series in the MacBeth studio project, Tegan and Sara have launched shoes in the Nolan category, Tegan’s black and Sara’s white.

Both sneakers are being touted as high top fashion with a grrrly edge and are scheduled to go on sale February 15th. They look pretty comfy and flexible and hopefully the high top feature will keep the snow out of your socks for the last few weeks of winter.

The two are no strangers to foot fashion, as they designed a pair of sneakers for the shoe company D.C. a few years ago.

Brandon Routh Not Doing Porno, But Gaining Vegan Psychic Powers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 23rd, 2009 in Actors.

Premiere Of Weinstein Company's

Superman star Brandon Routh, who had a comic role in Zack and Miri Make a Porno, is set to gain “vegan superpowers” in the upcoming movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

What the heck are vegan superpowers? Do you automatically know if a product has dairy in it without asking? No. Turns out, some people feel they gain psychic abilities after they become vegan. But the abilities have more to do with being in touch with the world and nature and more in tune with your interpersonal relationships.

Not to worry lacto-ovo guy, you’re vegan girlfriend doesn’t know your checking out her sister. Well, she does, but it has less to do with her being vegan and more to do with your eyes following her sibling’s butt when she walks into a room.

The movie is adapted from a series of comedy/action/romance comic books about a 20s something bass player in a band who falls in love with a girl, but has to defeat her evil ex-boyfriends in order to date her. We’ve all been there before.

Routh plays Todd Ingram, one of the evil exes. Interestingly, in the comic book series, Ingram secretly consumes non vegan products.

Not sure if other comic book psychic vegans picked up on his secret eating habits.

Live Earth Media Conference

Vegan singer and musician Missy Higgins wants to treat her environmentally aware fans by rewarding them with a special unreleased version of her song, “Where I stood” from the album On a Clear Night.

If you pledge to reduce your carbon footprint by 2% in 2009, you can download the unreleased song for free.

Not to leave folks in a boat without a paddle, Missy has included 10 Ways To Decrease Your Carbon Output on her Warner Brothers Website, like buying local and organic, replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, and walking more just to name a few.

Kinda disappointing that Missy left off one of the biggest ways to have smaller carbon feet-by going vegetarian!

The idea of the pledge is taken from the Sierra Club’s 2% Solution, which theorizes that if we reduce our carbon emissions by 2% every year, by 2050, we can curb global warming and its consequences.
