Joanne Rose Bothered By Dietitians Encouraging Meat And Dairy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 19th, 2008 in Actresses, Recipes.

Joanne Rose is an Australian born actress that has appeared in “CSI: New York” and as a stand in for the movie Knocked Up.

She was heavily influenced by the late River Phoenix, who was also a vegetarian, in her decision to stop eating animal products and is not too keen on the advice some medical professionals give about healthy eating.

“It bothers me that there are dietitians out there who encourage people to eat meat and dairy,” she told Celebrities For Health. “They believe that eating red meat gives you the essential iron intake you need…You can get all the right vitamins and minerals from being a Vegan. You can also take vitamin supplements to enhance your dietary needs.”

Some of her favorite foods are rice balls, tofu burgers, and wheat-free vegan pizza. She was kind enough to share one of her favorite recipes for “Savory Sauce.” We haven’t tried it yet, but sure sounds like something to share at a future staff dinner.

Almost Vegan Andre 3000 Benjamin Eats Honey And Wears Leather

Barneys New York Hosts The Launch Of Benjamin Bixby's New Collection

The veg half of the duo “Outkast,” is the first to admit he’s not the militant vegetarian that people label him. Although he won the 2004 Sexiest Vegetarian Title by PETA, he’s never done any work for them. In addition, he follows the mostly vegan diet, but not necessarily vegan lifestyle.

“I still eat honey and wear leather,” he told Rolling Stone.

He made some internet waves a couple of months ago after a photographed receipt from a restaurant showed he left no tip for a waiter who claimed to have bent over backwards to bring the ex partner of fellow vegetarian Erykah Badu a vegan meal.

Andre is currently working on a solo album that should be out at the end of this year or early next.

Dilbert’s Scott Adams Asks If Cow Sightings Make You Salivate

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 18th, 2008 in Cartoonists, Pop Culture.

Scott Adams is the creator of the popular Dilbert cartoon series that has launched a thousand laughs about the office, management, and the regular 9-5 grind most of us partake in.

Adams is a vegetarian and also has a blog, where, like cartoonist Dan Piraro, he sometimes like to discuss his beliefs about the lifestyle.

In one of his posts, he said that in order for humans to be natural meat eaters, two things must take place:

1. Eating lots of meat wouldn’t increase your health risks.
2. Seeing a cow would make you salivate if you were hungry

He then goes on to argue that if eating meat is that natural, meat eaters shouldn’t have to barbecue things up or shape them into steaks and so forth. Obviously he’s gotten lots of comments about the argument, but we can’t help but give him credit for such a brillant and hillarious way to argue against meat eating. The next time your friend chomps into a hamburger, ask him if sinking his teeth into live cattle rump would produce the same experience!

Don’t forget to check out Scott’s blog from time to time!

Paul McCartney Urged To Save The Poor Cows

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 in Chefs, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

adidas By Stella McCartney - LFW Spring Summer 2008 - Runway

Paul McCartney is being urged to save the cows by encouraging people to vote for a “Poor Cow” motion that will introduce ethical standards for cow rearing and dairy production.

The UK Vegetarian Society, which Paul is a patron of, currently has no standards for rearing cows and the dairy produced that is Vegetarian Society trademark approved. Because of this, some feel this means the society could be approving dairy products from cows that are kept in unhealthy conditions, not allowed to graze, and are fed genetically modified grain.

The Society is also being accused by some of having lower standards than groups such as UK organic Soil Association, The RSPCA Freedom Foods scheme, and Gordon Ramsay.

Yes, Gordon Ramsay has just scored another point in the ongoing meatoff between him and McCartney. It seems even the foul mouthed chef who suggested electrocuting vegetarians insists on animal welfare standards, only buying meat for his restaurants that are “ethically bread.”

“We have traceability across the board, where we have a certification of whether it’s organic beef, or whether it’s a hand-picked scallop or a line-caught sea bass,” he said in an interview.

Sources say the trustees of the society have told their members to vote against the motion because they feel doing so will cause membership to decline. Still, others want Paul to use his influence to vote for a minimum standard much like he has used his clout in the past to ban GM ingredients in certain foods.

Meatless Silver Screen: Joaquin Phoenix Refused To Wear Leather For Movies

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 in Actors.

Joaquin Phoenix (pronounced “WAA-keen”) took the named “Leaf,” as a child, reportedly because he had a little sibling rivalry and wanted a more “earthy” name like his brother and sister, Rain and the late River Phoenix.

He’s an actor who’s starred in films such as “Walk The Line,” the story of Johnny Cash, and once said that making movies involved a lot of manipulation:

“Making movies is a constant manipulation. You manipulate the environment. You make it rain when you want it to. You manipulate actors. And as an actor, you try and manipulate your feelings to match what you think you’d be going through in a situation where your character is going through something.”

One area he refuses to be manipulated in, however, is his personal beliefs. He refused to wear leather for many screen appearances, including going barefoot during a Prada shoot because the shoes were made of leather. He’s also requested fake leather for costumes in movies like “Gladiator” and “Quills”.
