Heather Mills Wants Gardein In Vegan Food Line, Cookbook To Follow

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008 in Food & Drink, Models.

Farm Sanctuary's 2008 Gala

Much talk has taken place about Heather Mills starting her own vegan food line. It was rumored she wanted the headquarters in Chicago. Then, she insisted on keeping the name of her food line top secret, until October. C’mon Heather, it’s the middle of the month. Don’t leave us hangin’!

Now at least we’re hearing more about what she wants to put in it. Like Emily Deschanel, Heather likes the idea of using Gardein as a meat substitute, and would like to partner with the company to produce entrees completely free of meat and dairy.

She may also give us everyday folk some secrets to making meals from scratch, according to a source for The Daily Mail.

We’re wondering how good of a cook Heather makes. Don’t know if she’s had any formal experience as a chef (although many celebrity chefs don’t). Would you guys buy her cookbook?

And what sorts of meals do you think she should include in her line? No one on staff has had any experience with Gardein meat. Any opinions?

James Cromwell states that in the largest factory farms, a pig is killed every 3 seconds.

Hmm…Should this be part of PETA’s campaign to educate Shane Victorino about where his Spam’s coming from?

Meatless Mouthful: Bill Maher On Presidential Turkey Pardoning

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 in Comedians, Meatless Mouthful, TV Hosts.

Los Angeles Confidential

“I ask you to do what I’m going to do and pardon a turkey this Thanksgiving. It’s not hard. Just eat something else (ideas here and here). Not someone else, because it doesn’t seem fair to spare a turkey and roast a hunk of pig or cow instead. If we can bow our heads in gratitude for our families, our friends and our big screen TVs, and then carve into a creature who lived a miserable life and died a horrible death, then our ethics are about as sensible as Britney’s parenting skills.”

—-Bill Maher, in an article that appeared in the Huffington Post last Thanksgiving season, asking President George W. Bush to pardon all turkeys. November’s just around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about what Tofurky, Seitan Turkey, or maybe even vegan mac and cheese (if you’re a college student not going home for the holidays) you’ll be enjoying this Holiday. Whatever meatless faux bird you choose, feel good in knowing that you’re giving turkeys across the nation a reason to be thankful.

Chrissie Hynde Joins PETA Protest Of KFC

School’s been back in session for a little over a month (in places where there’s summer break) and it’s time to show who’s made progress.

Sprig.com has graded the top vegan celebrities. Moby and Chrissie Hynde are serving as valedictorians, both receiving an A+ and no one got anything less than a B-.

The class consists of the following celebrity vegan pupils: Natalie Portman, Casey Affleck, Joaquin Phoenix (who only had one bad pizza experience, and it wasn’t in the school cafeteria), Russell Simmons, Alicia Silverstone, Prince, Shania Twain, Moby, Chrissie Hynde, Chris Martin, Pam Anderson, Andre 3000 Benjamin, and Tobey Maguire.

Oh, and of course, there’s plenty of school pictures. Only they look waaaay better than any of us did in ours.

Meatless Mouthful: Persia White Ecstatic About Prop 2

20th Anniversary Genesis Awards - Arrivals

“Yes, Yes, Yes for Prop 2 for every reason. It’s good for the animals, the planet, your heart, the environment – it’s so important. It’s sets a precedent that’s brand new, which is just that we’re gonna change a system that been in place for a long time, that’s so suppressive and so hidden, just because we think it’s wrong…and that’s beautiful! That’s like a shift in human consciousness. And everyone can be a part of it.”

—-Persia White, in an interview with Ecorazzi. Prop 2 is a California ballot measure that would prohibit some farm animals from being confined so that they cannot move around freely.

Davey Havok and the rest of AFI got down on their knees to thank her backstage at a concert. Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst can’t do without his peanut butter mousse dessert. Jason Schwartzman and Emily Deschanel dig them, and Gwyneth Paltrow requested the sweet goodies for her daughter Apple’s birthday party.

So who is this woman who caters to the stars and what eats does she create that brings grown men to their knees? Danielle Konya, owner of Vegan Treats Bakery in Bethlehem, PA, has earned the devotion of many celebrity fans from vegan desserts she’s spent years crafting in her home kitchen.

With a combination of great taste, word of mouth, not too mention some articles about her business in well known publications such as Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, and The Onion, she’s been extremely successful at selling pies, cupcakes, sticky rolls, cookies, and even wedding cakes that are free of dairy.

If you want to eat vegan sweets like a star, you can view the list of restaurants in the East Coast area (New York, D.C., Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia) that serve her creations on her Myspace page.

We hope we’re not giving Nellie a hard time or a bad image. But look at it this way: She’s good proof that vegans enjoy crap food like everyone else. And if it makes some of us like everyone else, hey, we won’t look so bad to the carnivores, huh?

McKay has jokingly called herself a “junkatarian,” in the past because she loves to chow down on french fries. In this Sprig.com video, she explains that although veganism can be hard, there’s still plenty of “vegan fun,” which she names as “potato chips, beer, and spaghetti.”

Woohoo! Go Nellie! Besides, spaghetti is full of protein and good carbs. She’s not so junkatarian as she’d like to believe. Hear her say how being vegan is the “primo” title of the eight she holds, in addition to singer, songwriter, and ukulele player.

Drew Lachey’s Magical Veggie Challenge For Kids

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 20th, 2008 in Children, Male Musicians, Male Singers, Videos.

106.7 Lite FM Kicks Off Broadway In Bryant Park 2008

I bet years ago when you listened to 98 Degrees, you never imagined them singing, “Beans, beans, the magical fruit. The more you eat, the more you toot.” Hey, maybe if they covered that song, more albums would’ve been sold. Ha!

Now Drew Lachey has embarked on another solo project-this one involving getting kids and their parents to become more aware of healthy eating. It all started when the “Dancing With The Stars” winner noticed his 2 1/2 year old daughter, Isabella, is quite picky about eating vegetables. “She wants to eat (veggies), sometimes she doesn’t, (and) sometimes we have to sneak them in.”

That led him to start the Magical Veggie Challenge in which kids can rewrite the, “Beans, beans, the magical fruit,” song. The only requirements are that the songs be 1 minute in length and include the words “beans” and “veggie.” The winner will be crowned in New York City next year in February. Watch the video below and hear Drew explain how fatherhood, (to the tune of “The Hardest Thing” everyone) is the “hardest thing he’ll ever have to do.”
