You’ve seen those commercials for “Happy Cows” sponsored by the California Milk Advisory Board where cows are seen roaming freely in the pasture, females get a chance to gossip while the bulls attempt to speak French in hopes procreating before slaughter time.

Not everyone agrees with the idyllic picture portrayed by the CMAB and Big Love actress Ginnifer Goodwin has written her thoughts to the Federal Trade Commission regarding what animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says are deceptive practices in these campaigns.

“In show business, we often have good reason for making people believe things that aren’t true, but there is no excuse for the CMAB’s misrepresentation of the milk industry,” writes Goodwin. “[C]onsumers deserve better than to be fed cheerful lies about ‘happy cows.'”

Goodwin goes on to say that the reality is most cows in California are confined in crammed spaces filled with dirt and their own excrement, and suffer udder infections as a result of being forced to produce unnatural amounts of milk induced through administering drugs.

Have you ever wondered what goes into those beautiful food scenes on television? How does a vegan actress appear to be eating turkey, when it’s really made of soybeans?

The New York Times has the lowdown on several grub events that took place in Hollywood film, and what went on behind the scenes so the actors could munch smoothly.

In the 2008 film, Pride and Glory, for example, three of the actresses were vegetarian or vegan, including Lake Bell.

Ruth DiPasquale, an assistant property master for the film, called a vegan chef to help create a Christmas dinner scene with ham as the centrepiece. Bell and the other veg actresses ate pieces of “sham ham.”

Says the New York Times:

“She ended up piling slices of sham ham made from soybeans near the real stuff, careful to make sure the two versions never touched.”

2009 White House Correspondents Association Dinner

Natalie Portman will be making a special guest appearance on Bravo’s Top Chef in the upcoming season six, which premiers Wednesday, August 26th at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Since Nat is a hard core vegan, the cheftestants will probably be given the challenge of whipping up something meatless, eggless, and dairyless for the actress.

Top Chef had a vegan experience last year, when the Food Fighters were invited during the Thanksgiving episode and requested the chefs cater for their crew of 60 people, some of which were vegetarian.

The vegan cornbread stole the show last year. Will another veg dish be a big hit?

Crossing our fingers none of the cheftestants “chicken” out like last year’s Carla and go with a meaty dish when they really wanted to make a vegetarian one.
