Quantcast Vegetarian Starseal hunt

Megan Park

Secret Life of the American Teenager‘s Megan Park is supporting a bill proposed by Canadian Senator Mac Harb that would phase-out the seal hunt.

As a native Canadian, Park wanted to show her support for both the politician and her stance against the hunt and wrote a letter urging the passage of S-210.

“Since I play a teenager on TV, I know that young people everywhere are becoming increasingly aware of issues that affect animals, and like me, they don’t want to see baby seals bludgeoned and skinned alive to make fur coats.”

Sarah Mclachlan

Sarah McLachlan has written a letter to Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper, asking that he help end the country’s annual seal hunt.

The problem with any industry that harms, be it animals, people or the earth, is that is also helping individuals feed, clothe and otherwise provide for themselves and their families, giving some the rationalization that it’s okay to continue.

But instead of berating the hunters for trying to earn a living, McLachlan calls on Harper to help create new economic opportunities that do not result in brutal killings.

Pamela Anderson Questions Ambassador On Seal Hunt Subsidies

8th Annual TV Land Awards - Show

Pamela Anderson says seals are being killed, but no one’s buying.

In a letter to the Canadian Ambassador to the U.S., Gary Doer, Pamela questions the continuation of the annual seal hunt despite signs the market is declining.

She then questions if the government is subsidizing hunters.

“Why it is that sealers in Québec were forced to throw their pelts overboard because of the lack of markets, while in Newfoundland, a certain processor is seemingly able to find people willing to pay double last year’s value of a pelt?”

“Given sealing-industry insiders’ reports of a negative market outlook for this year and given the accounts claiming that some processors have two to three years of pelts stockpiled that they cannot get rid of, who or where is the market for the 65,000 seals who have been killed this year.”

According to PETA, Pamela made the effort to personally hand deliver the letter with her questions to Mr. Doer.

Canada’s seal hunt ended early this year, a combination of both reduced demand and low harvest.

According to Harpseals, Larry Yetman, fisheries resource management officer for the Newfoundland and Labrador coastal region, pretty much confirmed Pamela’s statements regarding the demand for pelts.

Although pelt prices were selling for nearly double compared to last year’s–at $21–fisherman knew their efforts to collect would not be profitable, as the number of ships that launched from Newfoundland’s ports was down by 500.

“Every sealer in Newfoundland would have considered going out on the ice for that price, but there aren’t any buyers,” Yetman said.

Paul McCartney is the latest celebrity to add his name the growing list on the petition urging members of European Parliament to make the trading of goods made from seals illegal.

“The fate of millions of seal pups is in the hands of elected members of the European Parliament,” McCartney said in a statement.

“In the next few weeks they will have a historic opportunity to stop the cruel trade in seal products throughout the European Union.”

Voting on the complete ban takes place next week. Such a ban would deter hunters from clubbing seals, wishing to gain profits from their coats and meat.

“Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I think we can all agree that unspeakable suffering has occurred at the hands (flippers) of these sinister white snow devils. Most recently – in fact just now – they’ve been coined, ‘the white-fanged dispensers of death.’ Little is known of their feeding habits, although it’s widely speculated among seal clubbing spokespeople that human toddler brains are the preferred source of nutrition. And cod. As a counter measure, once a year Canadian hunters will selflessly enter an arena of unbridled peril. Broader dangers of the seal hunt include: accidentally clubbing one’s own shin, chapped lips, having to get up early, thirstiness, and the all too common: red snowball fight.”

—-Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, in a sarcastic piece he wrote in the Huffington Post on the Canadian Seal Hunt. Kudos to Ryan for shedding light on this situation. Although there’s nothing humorous about the seal hunt, at least Ryan’s post will spark attention and hopefully, incite others to take action.
