Quantcast Vegetarian StarSarah McLachlan Asks Canada Prime Minister To End Seal Hunt

Sarah Mclachlan

Sarah McLachlan has written a letter to Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper, asking that he help end the country’s annual seal hunt.

The problem with any industry that harms, be it animals, people or the earth, is that is also helping individuals feed, clothe and otherwise provide for themselves and their families, giving some the rationalization that it’s okay to continue.

But instead of berating the hunters for trying to earn a living, McLachlan calls on Harper to help create new economic opportunities that do not result in brutal killings.

“The sealers – like tobacco farmers and asbestos miners – need leaders to devise a practical exit strategy for them, not waste millions more in hopeless World Trade Organization challenges or paying to stockpile pelts when buyers already have seal pelts going back several years,” writes Ms. McLachlan. “Won’t you lead the way?”

McLachlan points out that the market for seal pelt is and has been declining. A recent change that drastically impacted the demand of seal fur is Russia’s decision to join the European Union and the United States in banning seal fur imports.

According to the Globe and Mail, Russia had been responsible for buying 95% of Canadian seal fur.

Ms. McLachlan’s entire letter can be read here.
