Peter Max, Wife Mary Host Event To End Chickens In Kaporos Rituals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 28th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Artists, Couples.

On Thursday, September 30th, 2010, Peter Max and wife Mary will host an event for the United Poultry Concerns and the Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos at the Peter Max Studio located at 37 West 65th Street, 7th Floor Between Columbus & Central Park West in New York City from 6:30-9:00 PM.

The Kaporos ritual precedes Yom Kippur and involves ritually slaughtering chickens in orthodox Jewish Communities. Dr. Allen Kornberg from Farm Sanctuary has suggested vegetarians and vegans substitute this practice for a gesture of kindness and charity during the Holiday, such as donating to a worthwhile cause or putting a material offering in a bag and sacrificing it as they would a live chicken. “I’d also like to take this opportunity to gently encourage those of you who are planning to eat a traditional holiday meal to reconsider and instead extend your compassion to the 46 million turkeys who are cruelly raised and slaughtered just for this day by choosing to celebrate with a vegetarian Thanksgiving (that can still be really fun and delicious!). After all, how can we sincerely honor the themes of Thanksgiving (i.e. peace and gratitude) with a slaughtered sentient being in the middle of the table (http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming_turkeys_farms.asp)?

Peter And Mary Max To Host Kelly Overton’s Standardized Testing

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Artists, Couples.

Activists and longtime veg couple Peter and Mary Max will be hosting the launch of the film, Standardized Testing on Friday, June 19th from 6:30-8:30 PM at the Max Studio at 37 West 65th Street, 7th Floor in New York City.

Standardized Testing follows activist Kelly Overton  as he returns to his Alma maters of Harvard, Tulane, Columbia, and UMass in an attempt to return his degrees and get his tuition refunded to bring attention to the controversial medical research being conducted on animals in university labs.

According to the Standardized Testing website, “The film uses scientific and economic data to show how medical research done on animals wastes billions of tax dollars annually, obstructs medical progress and needlessly tortures and kills millions of animals every year.”

Overton is the founder of PATH, People Protecting Animals and Their Habitats. PATH, according to its website, “advocates for the humane treatment of all animals, as well as the conservation and protection of areas that are vital to the survival of endangered or threatened species.”

Gossip Girl Dreama Walker, Moby Rub Elbows With Vegan Docs

The Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine is a non-profit organization that promotes a veggie diet and lifestyle to prevent and treat diseases like diabetes, as well as advocates the advancement of medical research without the testing on animals.

The group recently held a benefit at Peter and Mary Max’s in New York city, where veg celebrities like Moby, Dan Piraro, and Dreama Walker attended.

Guess that means Dreama kept her vegetarian ways.

If you recall, the Gossip Girl actress embarked on a 30-day vegan diet after watching the Joaquin Phoenix narrated documentary, Earthlings. She had said then she probably would continue, but might see how her body would react to dairy.

With all the vegan food to choose from at the event, Dreama certainly didn’t have to worry about straying from vegan that night, as food from fine restaurants like  Bonobo’s4-Course Vegan and Candle 79 was served.
