Pokerstars.net and the Hollywood office of the Humane Society of the United States recently got together for an evening of gambling, vegan snacks, and fun.

Actress Jorja Fox looked lovelier than ever as she played her chips and cards and fellow veggie actress Shannon Elizabeth was also dealing a sharp hand to help the animals. 

Proceeds from the “Casino Royale: Playing for Change” event went towards implementing the Los Angeles HSUS’s End Dogfighting program, which educates high risk youth about caring for pit bulls versus putting them up for dogfighting. The program has already proven successful in other large cities like Chicago.

This past weekend’s event included blackjack, roulette, craps and poker, a martini and wine bar, gourmet vegan food catered by Madeleine Bistro, a silent auction, and a celebrity poker tournament.

Wonder if vegan poker great Daniel Negreanu made an appearance?

Actress Jorja Fox hung out with the folks at GreenWithGlamour.com for their seasonal celebrity photoshoot and the crew enjoyed munching on vegan goodies, like curried mango and tempeh sandwiches.

Jorja was a multi-tasker that day as after the photo shoot she put on PETA t-shirt to pose for yet another photo campaign, this time to end the clubbing of Canadian seals.

Back to that tempeh recipe…Yum, yum, yum.

These sandwiches sound pretty simple to make, with chunks of mango and sliced scallions tossed into a pita with tempeh cubes and a dressing containing vegan mayo, curry, and lime.

Not to mention a nice food porn picture to give you something to salivate to.

Animal Acres is gearing up for its fantastic LA Veggie Pride Parade. The parade will feature all the awesome things a festival does, such as a march, food and entertainment, and guest speakers like Karen Dawn and Rory Freedman.

We’re just tickled pick that actor Larry Sullivan reads us. And even more tickled that we found out about him.

Sullivan, who Tweets @larrysullivan, is a vegetarian who’s had roles on “24,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” (wonder if he shared a veggie snack with Jorja Fox) “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” to name a few.

According to Vegan.com, after seeing one of PETA’s Kentucky Fried Cruelty’s billboards, he went on the Internet to do his research and realized he couldn’t possibly not be a vegetarian.

“Hours later, I was still at the computer crying like a baby realizing what I had been a part of for so long. I made the decision right then that I was going vegetarian. The timing was perfect. What better New Year’s Resolution than that! So New Year’s Day 2006 was the day my life (and the lives of many animals) changed for the better!”

Awesome Larry! Congrats for being in the exclusive Hollywood veggie club.

When you think of Jorja Fox, who played Sara Sidle on the CBS series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”, you think of her character as getting down and dirty: digging through dumpsters for evidence, feeling her way through a body cavity for a bullet, chalking down a crime scene.

She didn’t wear heels and a skirt for those scenes and most definitely wasn’t carrying a purse. Actress Jorja Fox took a break from CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in 2007, but she’ll be back for a few special episodes this fall. (Pause for fans cheering and screaming.) A quote from the vegetarian of 20 years about vegetarianism and the environment at the Animal Acres Farm Sanctuary Gala:

“I’ve been a vegetarian for a very long time, and this place, I think, exemplifies so many ways the microcosm of the macrocosm of the microcosm. If you can spend a little time with these creatures, you can connect them again to animals that you love, which I think helps everybody remember the importance of treating them humanely and with dignity. These are, you know, the lucky animals that have fallen off the backs of trucks and stuff. If you want to help the environment, go vegetarian.”
