“My idea of the perfect romantic Valentine’s Day is staying at home, cooking a yummy dinner, and watching a really scary movie.”

“The one thing I find the least romantic is taking a horse and carriage ride. I can’t express enough how unhappy these horses are and how much pain and suffering they go through each day. Please do not ride [in horse-drawn carriages]. Take a beautiful walk together with your loved ones instead of bringing more pain to these beautiful animals.”

Lea Michele PETA

Lea Michele is starring in her 2nd PETA ad that draws attention to horse-drawn carriages in New York city.

A group called NYCLASS is calling for the complete ban of horse-drawn carriages and instead replacing them with green replica electric-hybrid cars. Not only would this solve the odor problem that the horse stables give off (which some stories include filling up a school cafeteria with the funk and giving children rashes and other health problems from airborne manure particles), the cars are also able to keep pace with other vehicles on the street, reducing the chance for accidents. And finally, the horses will get rest.

“Imagine for a moment that you’re forced to do hard physical labor all day, seven days a week–whether it’s sweltering hot or freezing cold outside,” Lea says. “At the end of the day, instead of relaxing on an easy chair or sleeping in a comfortable bed, you are locked in a tiny closet all night long. That’s what it’s like for horses who are forced to pull carriages in New York City.”

“Don’t get taken for a ride. Please boycott horse-drawn carriages.”

Joanna Lumley Wants Horse-Drawn Carriages Banned In New York (Video)

Joanna Lumley

Former Bond girl Joanna Lumley is on a top mission to get horse-drawn carriages off the streets in New York city, something that has already been done in other cities in the state, as well as in other cities outside the United States like London, Paris and Toronto.

“People have an old romantic notion about it. I would just say, ‘Please think again – think of the freezing and boiling weather they are forced to work in, and think of the cramped city stables where the horses are kept,” Lumley said.

“I wish they would just allow the horses to remain in Central Park, but I understand that’s hard to achieve with the city. I love the bill aimed at replacing the horse-drawn carriages with Great Gatsby-era cars. That is glamorous.”

A video showing the traffic conditions the horses often travel through is enough to make anyone want the protection of an actual vehicle versus a carriage, as the horses share the roads with dozens of taxis, personal vehicles and emergency vehicles.

Living in New York City, Lea Michele sees horse-drawn carriages on a regular basis. And while some may feel it’s innocent entertainment or tradition, the actress took to Alicia Silverstone‘s blog, The Kind Life, to urge readers to take a stroll through city parks by foot instead–and possibly get the horses to a sanctuary.

“My biggest trouble these days are the poor horses in Central Park. Living in New York City, I see them sadly standing on the sides of busy streets with their heads right in the asses of the horse right in front of them! They walk in the rain, snow, and heat, pulling people all day long, rarely getting proper food, water or care.”

“If you live in New York, next time you’re walking down Central Park Blvd. and you see tourists considering going for a ride, suggest to them that they take a stroll through Strawberry Field instead–the horses cant go through there-or rent a bike…or now they even have people who ride bikes and have seats for people on the back! It’s so much more fun.”
