Pamela Anderson India Visit Increases Non-Leather Seeking Consumers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 22nd, 2010 in Actresses, Fashion.

Pamela Anderson

Pamela Anderson once said, “Leather in India is a huge problem. I narrated a documentary about that ten years ago, and nothing’s changed.”

Maybe that statement was made one reality TV show too soon.

Sources say that since Anderson has taken a stance against leather in India while filming the country’s version of “Big Brother,” there’s been a surge in people asking about non-leather products.

We’ve recovered from the cat throwing former contestant on Project Runway and this season, we’re excited that Gretchen Jones is competing with her organic cotton denim and other sustainable clothing.

Jones told Oregon Live, “I use natural fibers and try to impact my environment by making things to order; I don’t over-produce. I also try to sustain the economy that supports me,” Jones said about buying local.

While we’re loving Tim Gunn‘s anti-fur stance, it’s surprising to learn he was hesitate about Jones using only sustainable materials in the competition. Such little faith?

Stella McCartney Named Official Olympics Designer

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Fashion.

Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney has been chosen as the creative director for the British Olympic Team!

Stella’s title means she’ll be overseeing everything the athletes wear, as well as the fan wear. Her partnership with the Olympic brand Team GB marks the first time a fashion designer will be responsible for the attire of the entire British team, including for the 2012 London Games.

Stella called her role, “an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” and her words may be more than sentiment for other fashion designers.

No other designer has been granted involvement with the Olympic games at such a high level, the closest coming to the honor being Ralph Lauren being responsible for the opening ceremony outfits for team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“Project Runway” Makes Trash Classier Than Leather (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 26th, 2010 in Fashion, Reality TV, Videos.

Stella McCartney said that wearing leather is just plain trashy.

One contestant from Season 7’s Project Runway thought the same, so he proved even a trash bag looks better than animal hide.

The outfit, including the woven belt, is contructed entirely from Hefty’s, and is meant is resemble faux leather.

Jay Nicolas Sario said he thought of the words, “Sexy bitch,” when he created the outfit.

The judges are impressed and one said, We’ve seen many garbage bags on Project Runway, but never quite like this.”

Take a look and decide for yourself.

Could this faux be taken for real?

Madonna Daughter Lourdes Leon Gives Stella McCartney Advice

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 in Fashion.

'Nine' New York Premiere

Madonna is set to release her new teen clothing line named Material Girl.

The 1980s Material Girl probably got teenage daughter Lourdes Leon‘s advice on the new line, considering every other fashion designer does.

Madonna told US Magazine, “She also comes to my photo and video shoots, pulls outfits together and gives her input to a lot of my fashion-designer friends. Whether it’s Marc Jacobs or Stella McCartney, they always ask her what she thinks.”

If Lourdes gives Stella McCartney the thumbs up or down, she may be one step ahead of her mother’s sense of style by appreciating fashions created without leather or fur.

Madonna was criticized a few years back for wearing a fur coat made from chinchillas.

Lourdes played a big part in the Material Girl clothing line.

“I’ve been involved in business meetings, but Lola’s really doing the work. I just sit in the corner on my BlackBerry.”

Let’s hope Lourdes continues to take the wheel in this teen fashion line and steer far away from any from the animal hide lane.

Stella McCartney Ethical Designs Set Fall Fashion Trends

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010 in Fashion.

Stella McCartney Switches On Store Christmas Lights

Designers have debuted their collections for the fall (including the Chanel show where Karl Lagerfeld praised fake fur), and soon women will start stocking their wardrobes accordingly.

If you can’t accessorize your closet exactly like the runway, several fashion experts in retail have given their advice on what to keep in mind, or the “big picture” when you walk into the department store.

Ethical designer Stella McCartney‘s collections are listed as both “must haves” and a blueprint for the “big picture.”

Elyse Walker, who’s shop is located in Pacific Palisades, has the right idea when she recommends a Stella vegan handbag, but is way off when she can’t stop talking about fur.

“I ordered 50 to 70 furs for a store that’s a mile from the beach. But it gets cold at night, and it’s a fashion statement that will be in every ad and editorial. Fur trims on sweaters (Brunello Cucinelli) and scarves (Gucci).”

Thankfully, Walker qualifies these statements with, “We will have faux fur as well.”

Julie Gilhart, fashion director, Barneys New York, says the idea that “less is more” is in, and is exemplified with sweaters such as Stella McCartney cardigans.

Karl Lagerfeld Praises Fake Fur At Channel Fashion Show

Karl Lagerfeld Receives 'Menschen In Europa' Award

Karl Lagerfeld is digging the fake fur scene!

The designer recently praised fake fur used in the Channel fall 2010 runway show.

Has Lagerfeld experienced a change in heart?

As Allure discusses, Lagerfeld was quoted by The Telegraph saying discussing the ethics of fur in fashion was “childish.”

But the beauty of faux has caught Lagerfeld’s attention and if he’s not doing it for ethics, at least he’s appreciating the aesthetic value of using material from something other than an animal.

Plus, the new fake fur is now soft and cuddly, according to Lagerfeld.

“Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing—not one piece,” said Lagerfeld. “That was the idea. The material is beautiful and new in a way, because it was not that perfect before. It looked vaguely ok, but if you touched it, it was stiff and harsh. Now, it’s not like that at all anymore.”

On another positive note, Allure says Lagerfeld also doesn’t eat meat.
