Nellie McKay has an extensive interview with Broadway World where she spills her heart on issues like animal rights and global warming, vegan food, favorite celebrities and that never going away topic of Lady Gaga‘s meat dress.

A song on her latest CD, Home Sweet Mobile Home, titled “Unknown Reggae,” is about animals being consumed for meat.

“For animal rights, it would be “Unknown Reggae” on the new record. It is about the meat, in particular. But, animal products – including dairy and eggs, although I know it is difficult to get off of them – that’s the quickest way to end global warming. It really has a terrible impact on the earth, eating higher up on the food chain like that. If we went back to the basics of vegetables, legumes, grains – the things closer to the earth – it’s a lot better for the earth and for other people. We can feed more people, we can feed the starving people.”

Common

Rapper Common was sighted in Chicago having lunch with his mother and daughter at Karyn’s On Green.

The restaurant offers raw, vegan food such as soups, salads and sandwiches and is owned by Karyn Calabrese, a vegan for 30 years who appeared on The Oprah Show on a segment on anti-aging.

Common and the fam dined on squash soup, a portobello sandwich and a vegetable wrap. Karyn’s lunch menu indicates the butternut squash soup is also gluten-free and contains chickpeas for an extra protein punch.

Common Celebrate Just Wright

Rapper and actor Common had his publicist take care of the daunting task of asking about ingredients for his lunch at Busboys and Poets for an interview with the Washington Post.

The Just Wright actor got a vegan pepperoni pizza with soy cheese and faux meat with lots of other veggies on a whole wheat crust.

“I think the way we choose to eat is definitely important,” he said. “I was vegan for a minute and I really commend those who can eat vegan. Then I was vegetarian. Now I eat fish, but I try not to eat too much dairy. I’m excited about this pizza.”

Common shared a story about when he did an ad for People with the Ethical Treatment of Animals that his family and friends saw on a billboard in New York.

“They put those ads up on this billboard in Brooklyn and my friends would ride past it and just laugh,” he said. “It did look kind of funny.”

Apparently, this vegan pizza at Busboys and Poets in Washington, D.C. is darn good, because Common ordered another one “to go.”

And these are some of the most veggie friendly waiters and bards in the district.

Besides “The Vegan” pizza with “vegan mozzarella, mushroom, onion, green and red peppers, vegan pepperoni with marinara or garlic and oil on a whole-wheat crust,” Busboys and Poets also offers vegan calzones, falafel, veggie burgers, vegan queasadillas and coconut tofu bites with plum sauce.

New York Premiere Of Just Wright

Although we love our pescatarians who have removed all animals but seafood from their diets, we do want to get one thing straight.

Fish is meat too.

And presents health risks like mercury poisoning.

And it’s not the best thing for the environment.

But at least rapper Common knows fish is meat and won’t call himself a “vegetarian”, although he emphasizes seafood is the only non plant item he’ll eat.

“I eat fish and that’s it,” the former vegan told Metromix. “That’s the only meat that I eat. I think that’s meat to me. If you eat fish, it’s fish meat.”

The rapper who’ll be starring as a basketball player who bonds with his physical therapist played by Queen Latifah in Just Wright, gets the rest of his protein from favorite veggie foods of beans and rice and vegetarian hot dogs.

We know Erykah just likes wearing her vegan pride whenever she gets the chance.

The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards - InStyle/Warner Bros. After Party - Arrivals

We cried a river when hip hopper and rapper Common announced he had gone from vegan to eating dairy and fish.

The good news is that’s the only thing animal related that touching his luscious lips (no beef, poultry, pork) and he still openly talks about his almost vegetarian lifestyle in public.

Just Jared caught up with him to learn Common likes his veggie sausages when he’s having breakfast at Dizzies in Park Slope in New York.

“I get breakfast from there [Dizzies] all the time. I eat a certain diet. I eat a lot of oatmeal. I eat veggie sausages and some good fruit.”

“I felt that beef and pork wasn’t good. I did my own tests and found that beef and pork weren’t really good for my system. So I’ve been a lot clearer by not eating those meats, and also chicken. Turkey was good, I like turkey, bacon and all that, but I just went vegan at one point. So when I decided to go back the other way, I just needed fish and I feel balanced with that. You’ve got to eat the right things. It’s not just about not eating meat. You’ve got to find out what your body needs, what’s healthy for you. What’s good for life.”

Pay a visit to Just Jared to learn how he feels people can get involved with their community like he’s done with his foundation, Common Ground.

Black Eyed Peas 4th Annual Peapod Foundation Benefit Concert - Arrivals

So maybe it hasn’t become as famous as, “To Be or Not To Be,” or any other little verses we were forced to memorize in high school. But who knows…a hundred years from now, young pupils may be reciting the great works of Rapper Common and his thoughts on dairy:

“I think and speak clearer since I cut the dairy out. I can breathe better and perform at a better rate, and my voice is clearer. I can explore different things with my voice that I couldn’t do because of my meat and dairy ingestion. I am proud and blessed to be a vegetarian, everything became clear.”

Common, along with other famous and celebrity quotes by people like Kate Bush and Moby, are located at Happy Vegetable.

Our runner up for favorite quote is by a well known doctor, Dr. Neal Barnard, head of the Physicians Committee For Responsible medicine, vegan, and frequent Vegetarian Times contributor who specializes in diabetic research:

“The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined. If beef is your idea of “real food for real people” you’d better live real close to a real good hospital.”
