The weather’s getting warmer and every earth loving vegan wants nothing more than to spend every minute in the great outdoors right?

Okay, so after you’ve bought enough calamine lotion that it’s worth buying stock in the company and the insect bites on your limbs make you look like a Center for Disease Control alert because somehow smallpox has made it back, even the biggest Mother Earth hippie may decide to enjoy nature by watching her spider plant in the great indoors.

But if you think bug bites are annoying to humans, just think of all the poor four-legged people who have to endure them. And most cats and dogs don’t know how to buy stock. Rachael Ray and her dog Isaboo can be found on the cover of the October 2010 issue of pet magazine Tails Inc.

Inside, Ray discusses her charity, Rachael’s Rescue, which donates money she earns through her dog food line Nutrish, to North Shore Animal League, ASPCA, Bad Rap, and Vet Pets, with the remainder of the money going to smaller organizations dedicated to animal rescue and welfare that doesn’t involve euthanasia.

Ray fell in love with a pit bull, Boo, in her twenties. From there, she vowed only to own the breed so many  people are banning and shying away from.

“I’m committed the rest of my life to having only Pit Bulls. People are so ignorant, and they’ve outlawed them in so many communities and some states, that I just think it’s my mission in life to prove to people that there’s no such thing as an evil animal. There are only evil humans.”

“Puppy mills are awful, filthy, cruel places where dogs never see daylight, sleep in their own feces, and r bred over n over for pet stores.”

“Boycott pet stores people!!!!”

According to the ASPCA, puppy mills got started shortly after World War II, as a way to guarantee cash when widespread crop failures occurred in the midwest. Later in the 70s, puppy brokers on the East Coast in the U.S. convinced Amish farmers to breed dogs to be taken to pet stores and even conducted seminars to teach farmers how to operate breeding facilities.
