Miley Cyrus Saves A Chicken, Gets Some Chocolate

Miley Cyrus Performs On ABCs Good Morning America

Miley Cyrus’ intentions were questioned by TMZ when she was spotted looking for her aunt’s lost dog, but she’s racking up a history of animal rescue that no one will be able to dispute.

Miley shared the spot with some chickens on the set of Hannah Montana: The Movie and at the end of the filming, she decided to give them the Hollywood plush life and took them home.

As pets, not for dinner. According to Foxnews.com:

“Miley picked it up thought it was real cute and decided she needed to save this chicken. So she put it in a cardboard box with some pine straw and got her mom to take it home,” co-star Jason Earles told Tarts.

PETA decided to reward Miley with their Compassionate Citizen Award. The prize? Vegan chocolates.

If this were the award for animal rescue, 50% of the population (cough, cough females) would be signing up for animal rights activism!

Kudos to Miley for rescuing the chickens. Good thing she’s done filming for the movie. We heard the camera adds ten pounds. Now she can freely indulge in her chocolates without worry .

Who Wants A Shirtless Barack Obama For PETA?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, April 11th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Politicians.

US President-elect Barack Obama enjoys shave ice with friends and family in Hawaii

Just when you think you’ve heard everything about President Obama, new news surfaces.

In 2006, when Barack was an Illinois senator, he wrote a letter to PETA condemning the Canadian seal hunt.

Yes, THE PETA. Who knew Barack had such animal lovin’ roots!

“I share your concerns about the Canadian seal hunt,” Obama wrote in a letter to the organization, dated April 13, 2006.

“As you know, Canada annually opens its eastern waters to commercial seal hunting. The United States and European Union have been unified in their opposition to the slaughter of seals by passing legislation decades ago to restrict the sale of seal-based products within their borders.”

“I certainly believe in the spirit of these acts; the U.S. should not condone this recent Canadian action.”

Much ado has been made about the level of physical fitness of the current president. (Shirtless photo, shirtless photo, shirtless photo.)

Would it be inappropriate for us to suggest the President of the United States to take off his shirt for PETA in the name of animals? Even jokingly? We certainly hope not.

One thing’s for sure, it’s definitely appropriate for Obama to continue to champion for animals while in office.

Michael Jackson: No Animals On Tour, Not Off The Wall With PETA

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 9th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

Michael Jackson press conference in London

Not long ago, we brought you the rumor going around that Michael Jackson was planning to use live animals during his comeback tour and that the show would feature wild animals accompanying Michael on stage such as elephants, panthers, and birds.

PETA received word that Michael does not plan to use such animals or any live animals in his shows. Whew! Wipe sweat from brow.

However, they’re still not letting him Off the Wall yet.

In a recent blog entry, the group chastised Michael for his previous mistreatment of animals.

“Too bad he still has a spotty past when it comes to compassion for animals. It had been widely reported that Jackson planned to ride an elephant on stage and use panthers, but subjecting animals to amplified noise, bright lights, and the fast pace of a massive concert production is cruel. Plus, his rap sheet from the not-too-distant past includes dumping his chimpanzee, Bubbles, with a Hollywood trainer. And many of the animals he left behind at Neverland Ranch ended up being sold at auction, despite repeated offers from PETA to help place them in sanctuaries. His orangutans were reportedly sold to a private owner in Connecticut, two of his alligators are languishing at the disgusting G.W. Exotic Animal Park, his giraffes in the care of a private owner in Arizona are on the verge of being evicted, and more.”

“Michael, it’s bad, it’s bad, and you know it.”

Spike TVs 2008 Scream Awards - Arrivals

Singer Billy Corgan and former drummer Jimmy Chamberlin of the Smashing Pumpkins have reunited. But only to speak out against Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The two musicians have become the latest celebrities to sign the petition against KFC due to the manner in which the company treats its chickens before and during slaughter.

Crammed cages with no room to move around, beaks cut off baby birds, and being held upside down with their throats slits are just a few of the ways PETA says KFC inhumanely raises and kills birds that later show up on the menu.

Jimmy recently announced his departure from the band, leaving Billy the last man standing.

The two follow the footsteps of many celebrities that have chosen to speak out against KFC, including Pamela Anderson, Rise Against, and Russell Simmons

Premiere Of Miramax Films Adventureland - Arrivals

“Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I think we can all agree that unspeakable suffering has occurred at the hands (flippers) of these sinister white snow devils. Most recently – in fact just now – they’ve been coined, ‘the white-fanged dispensers of death.’ Little is known of their feeding habits, although it’s widely speculated among seal clubbing spokespeople that human toddler brains are the preferred source of nutrition. And cod. As a counter measure, once a year Canadian hunters will selflessly enter an arena of unbridled peril. Broader dangers of the seal hunt include: accidentally clubbing one’s own shin, chapped lips, having to get up early, thirstiness, and the all too common: red snowball fight.”

—-Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, in a sarcastic piece he wrote in the Huffington Post on the Canadian Seal Hunt. Kudos to Ryan for shedding light on this situation. Although there’s nothing humorous about the seal hunt, at least Ryan’s post will spark attention and hopefully, incite others to take action.

Ron Artest Buries The Bad Pet Owner Bone

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 3rd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports.

NBA: FEB 24 Trail Blazers at Rockets

Basketball player Ron Artest admits he hasn’t always been the poster boy for pet owners. In 1997, animal control officers were called to his home to find his Great Dane underweight and sick. Neighbors had tipped off authorities that Artest often went away on long trips, leaving his dogs without food and water.

Authorities had been called to Artest’s home three times before and removed dogs from his residence.

Now, Artest has claimed to have cleaned up his act, even working with PETA to record a PSA urging pet owners to spay and neuter their animals.

Is this a permanent change? We sure hope so.

“I was an irresponsible pet owner, and I got in some trouble,” Artest said, in an interview with the Houston Chronicle at chron.com. “PETA came and showed me how to be a better pet owner. A lot of times, it’s a simple thing. One of my problems was that the fence around my home wasn’t safe enough. I had a lot of dogs, and they kept getting out. The thing is, just because you’re irresponsible, it doesn’t mean you don’t love your pets. I loved my dogs. You just need to be more mature and accountable for how you treat your animals. I had to be educated.”

Animal neglect is such an ugly issue. It’s hard to imagine how a person could even commit acts of the nature. So we are hoping that the NBA star who’s earned a bad boy reputation on and off the court won’t be called out for any more fouls in this area.

Joe Biden Gets A+ On Humane Society Pro-Animal Report Card

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Politicians.

Biden swears-in Kirk as US Trade Rep in Washington

The Humane Society Legislative Fund has a list just like Santa that its checking more than twice. And every nice or naughty politician will have to answer how their actions contributed to animal welfare.

The Humane Scorecard Booklet is designed to let everyone know where politicians stand on animal rights.

The Scorecard currently shows the 110th Congress “made significant progress on animal protection legislation, including banning the import of puppies from foreign breeding mills, strengthening the federal law on animal fighting, and providing safeguards against tainted ingredients in pet food.”

Several government officials received a score of a “1oo+” including  Barbara Boxer (Calif.), Diane Feinstein (Calif.), John Kerry (Mass.), Carl Levin (Mich.), and vice president Joe Biden.

Politicians earn points on the scorecard through several measures involving either voting or taking action against animal rights. Those earning the highest ratings of 100+  were the prime sponsors of pro-animal legislation that became law. Points can also be earned through co-sponsorship of bills and boosting funding for the enforcement of animal welfare laws.

Biden racked up points for co-sponsoring bills against animal fighting and horse slaughter.

Check to see how your favorite politician scored this time around on The Humane Scorecard.
