Alicia Silverstone The Kind Diet Book Launch Party

What non vegetarian food did you find hardest to give up after taking the big veg plunge?

For Alicia Silverstone, it was Shabbat dinners that made her weak in the knees.

“I freakin’ loved gefilte fish,” Silverstone told the Jewish Journal, during a recent interview.

Here are a few other highlights from the online story:

She Never Stopped Loving Meat:
I’m not the person who ever stopped loving the taste of meat. I’m a foodie. But I knew I had to give meat up to be able to look at myself in the mirror, to know that I’m a good person and a good Jew. How could I continue seeing myself as a person who cares about the world and yet be responsible for suffering?

On Equating Animal Slaughter To The Holocaust:
I’m always hesitant to go there, because I don’t want to alienate people. We all know that the Holocaust was devastating; one of my oldest, closest family friends was a survivor. But for me, it’s the truth. The production of animals is the greatest holocaust that is happening now, because it’s allowed.

On How A Vegan Lifestyle And Spirituality Connect:
I have found my peace in living in the world as kindly as I can. Going to yoga and meditation, and eating well — that’s how I feel my connection to God.

Alicia Silverstone chatted with Ken Spector at the Green Lounge Project where they talked and talked about vegetarian food, Alicia’s favorite restaurants and the myths of free-range meat.

“It’s legal to have fecal matter on your meat,” Alicia says.

“So when you buy a cellophane wrapped steak, you’re getting poo poo too.”

So that’s it.

The question of what “mystery meat” is has been answered.

Some might wonder how a vegan diet might change their life.

Alicia had a lot to say about what being vegan “doesn’t” do for you.

“You don’t wake up exhausted. And you don’t need coffee to get through the day. And you don’t keep getting sick and needing anti-biotics. And after a meal, you don’t feel like you needs Tums…”

Alicia Silverstone discussion and signing of her new book 'The Kind Diet'

For all of you enjoying your Kind Diet book copy, you’ll be pleased to know another Alicia Silverstone work may be on the way.

But first, she has to announce she has a child on the way.

“Yeah, but I want to wait until I have kids and then write a book for children,” Alicia said, when asked if she planned to write another book.

“I have a lot to say about kids, but I don’t think anyone wants to hear that when you don’t have them! [Laughs.] So I want to have kids and go through, ideally, a whole natural-birth experience.”

Maybe Alicia and Erykah Badu could do some talking about natural birth together? Erykah could teach Alicia how to coherently Tweet while doing so.

Until Alicia puts a vegan baby on board, pick up a copy of That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals by Ruby Roth to teach your children about a vegetarian lifestyle.

Alicia Silverstone “Wall Street Journal” Eating Cheap Advice

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 in Actresses, Books, Food & Drink.

Alicia Silverstone The Kind Diet Book Launch Party

Alicia Silverstone spoke with the Wall Street Journal about her book The Kind Diet.

It’s no secret eating healthy isn’t always cheap, but when you compare the cost of good produce now to cardiac problems and other food related diseases later in life, you’ll find the investment pays off.

Alicia gave some tips on making a healthy, vegan diet work, even if you’re on a budget.

WSJ: Sometimes organic and specialty foods can be more expensive. Do you have any advice for people on a budget?

Alicia: You can do this and this will be cheaper – unless you’re eating at Mc Donald’s everyday. I cant argue with that, cause that’s just cheap. I think it can be a lot cheaper because steak and meat are really expensive. When you start shopping at a local farmer’s market, the food is really inexpensive because it’s in season. At the end of the day, after you take away all of the nasty foods and add the good foods, your grocery bill will level out.

“Nasty” foods being processed, sugar filled-usually things that are already prepared, thus costing more money anyway.

Alicia Silverstone The Kind Diet Book Launch Party

Vegetarian Times magazine had the chance to do a Q & A with Alicia Silverstone for the holiday November/December 2009 issue.

As expected, Alicia had much to say about her new book, The Kind Diet, including the resources she used to provide data on the benefits of a plant based diet.

Alicia cited several well known vegetarian authors for The Kind Diet references.

“I can’t remember if it was Dr. Neal Barnard who blew my mind first or if it was John Robbins. I learned so much from Dr. Barnard’s books Food For Life and Foods That Fight Pain. John Robbins himself gave me a copy of The Food Revolution, which was his next book after Diet For a New America. I love how he lays it all out: “Here’s what they tell us and here’s the truth.” My newest hero is Dr. T. Colin Campbell, who wrote The China Study.”

You can read the entire interview with Alicia in the latest issue of Vegetarian Times on the stands now.
