Mandela Day: A 46664 Celebration Concert

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, First Lady of France and wife of Nicolas Sarkozy, enjoyed vegan fare from Candle Cafe at an event intended to honor her for her work with Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Carla was accompanied by her husband and Jordan’s Queen Rania.

The party was hosted by Peter Chernin and Tom Freston along with his wife, author Kathy Freston, who happens to be vegan.

Other guests included Brian Grazer, Charlie Rose, Christy Turlington and Howard Schultz

Carla is already fur-free, as she announced this several months ago.

Will the delish vegan food from Candle Cafe make her want to go meat-free as well?

Brigitte Bardot Lobbies to Save Romanian Dogs

Former actress turned animal activist Brigitte Bardot is trying to round up support from a fellow French sister to end bullfighting in France.

The sport which involves brutally killing a bull in front of an audience is a tradition in Southern France, much like it is in Spain.

Bardot has written to France’s First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, asking for her help to end the torture by giving hubby President Nicolas Sarkozy the nudge.

“Could you convince your husband to ban bullfights, this atrocious spectacle of death, by telling him ”someone told me France must no longer allow the death of a tortured animal”?” wrote Bardot.

“I can”t tell you how important this stance is in the struggle I have pursued for so many years.”

Bardot also thanked Mrs. Sarkozy for not wearing fur.

2009 Annual Military Parade at the Champs Elysees - Paris

France’s first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, recently showed her compassionate side by revealing she refuses to wear fur.

Now hubby president Nicolas Sarkozy is appearing to show support for animals and the environment, supporting a ban on bluefin tuna fishing, wanting to add the fish to the Convention In International Trade on Endangered Species.

However, appearances can be deceiving.

It seems Sarkozy’s ban has more to do with helping people fish more in the future than it does to save the fishes.

At the national stakeholder consultation on the future of France’s fisheries, Sarkozy said, “Ours is the last generation with the ability to take action before it’s too late – we must protect marine resources now, in order to fish better in future. We owe this to fishermen, and we owe it to future generations.”

Several notable people, including vegan actress and activist Alicia Silverstone, as well as some British celebrities, have spoken against bluefin tuna being served in restaurants due to the fact it’s an endangered species.

Great minds must think alike!

We recently gave props to Tila Tequila and First Ladies Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy for speaking out against the fur industry and proclaiming their fur-free status!

Now, Russell Simmons has blogged at the Huffington Post, giving praises to the above individuals for the actions.

“Our blogger, Tila Tequilla, trumped all of our other celebrity bloggers by handing in the most viewed and commented blog in the history of Global Grind on the subject of animal abuse.”

“…Michelle Obama and France’s first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy have declared themselves FUR FREE!!! Last week marks a shift in human consciousness.”

“We are finally, after years of going head to head with the fur industry, changing the way the world views fur. It is no longer being viewed as a way to floss and show off your status or bank account – it is now a billboard of cruelty on people’s back.”

Michelle Obama And Carla Bruni-Sarkozy: Furless First Ladies

2009 NATO Summit

France’s First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy recently came out of the fur closet and revealed she doesn’t wear fur, and although she may have worn it back in her old modeling days, any fur that’s on her bod now is fake.

“I do not wear, buy or own fur,” wrote France’s first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, in a letter obtained by G2, to Dan Mathews, senior vice president for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals U.S. “Every designer who kindly lends me clothes for public appearances can tell you that I do not accept to wear fur pieces, even when they’re only a small part of the outfit.”

Not to be one upped, U.S. First Lady, Michelle Obama, recently made a statement echoing Bruni-Sarkozy’s style. It was shorter, but still got the point across.

“Mrs. Obama does not wear fur,” Michelle’s deputy press secretary Semonti Mustaphi confirmed.

Now that’s a policy that doesn’t need debating!
