Rice and veggies is so traditionally vegetarian, you may wonder why there’s even a need to develop a recipe for it.

After all, that’s there to follow about three or four of your favorite vegetables thrown over a bed of boiled or steamed rice?

But there are dozens of combinations of vegetables, each giving the dish a distinctive flavor.

Green plants like broccoli often dominate the dish, but here’s a version from Daphne Oz that adds a little more kick to plain brown rice with onions and celery.

Broccoli Obama Shirt

George Bush denounced the green vegetable, but President Barack Obama recently showed just how opposite he and the former GOP leader are by declaring how much he loves broccoli.

At the 2nd annual White House Kids State Dinner, two of the child attendees were given the opportunity to ask Obama a question. When asked what his favorite food was, Obama’s answer was the popular member of the cabbage family.

Michelle Obama Kids State Dinner Winners Include Veg Indian-Americans

Healthy-Lunchtime-Challenge-2013

The winners in each state for Michelle Obama‘s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge will be joining her and White House staff on July 9 for the second annual kids state dinner.

The goal of the contest was to encourage kids and their families to submit healthy recipes and it’s no surprise there were several vegetarian and vegan winners.

Indian food is known for being heavily plant-based and five Indian-American children were winners for this year’s dinner.
