Need some organic coffee to wash down your “She’s A Jar” Wilco Sky Blue Sandwich Company sandwich?

The Chicago based band Wilco now has an organic coffee named after them in addition to some deli sandwiches, available from their hometown roaster, Intelligentsia.

Organic Ethiopia Sidama Homecho Waeno has a description more passionate that country music lyrics:

“The aromatics of coffee blossom and violet make way for an incredibly graceful and elegant cup. The body has a light and silky quality, like fresh whipped cream, that beautifully compliments the ever-present note of citron, juniper berry and vanilla. As it cools, the cup blossoms into notes of confectioner’s sugar, rosehips, and soft raisin, resonating on a pristine finish with a touch of milk chocolate.”

Vegan Cookie Monster Thief Suspect

Vegan Cookie Monster Thief Suspect

Cookie Monster should stop looking for his wife near Oscar’s can and instead head over to NYC’s One Lucky Duck vegan eatery.

According to the New York Post, the manager there claims a woman has tried to rob him of his vegan, organic cookies twice during the past month. Arriving on a scooter, the woman first hit him with her foot-powered vehicle and then tried to spray him with Mace.

These gingerbread cookies she is after must be good, because the last time she attempted to steal them, she yelled, “F*ck you! I’ll be back every day! You can count on it,” before escaping.

What We Like: The use of non-motorized vehicle as the getaway instrument. An idling getaway car wastes gas and puts toxic emissions into the air.

What We Hate: Stealing is never cool, especially from establishments that are trying to do the right thing by providing, animal and earth-friendly goods. Reward these places by paying for your cookies before taking off on your scooter.

It’s your choice whether or not to use profanity to indicate you’ll be a returning customer.

Robin Quivers “Vegucating Robin” Cooking Show Trailer (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 22nd, 2010 in Film & TV, Food & Drink, Radio Hosts, Videos.

After five years of eating vegan, Robin Quivers faced what many face after putting another bean burrito in the microwave and scarfing it down with tomato soup. Bored with her usual food routine, Quivers hired a chef, a handsome man named Gavan who is reported to be able to “cook anything,” including some new dishes to spark Quivers’ palate.

This new television show, Vegucating Robin, will feature Gavan teaching Quivers how to blend, boil, bake, blanch and blacken tofu, pasta, legumes, vegetables and all these meat, egg, and dairy-free.

For those of us itching for a vegan or vegetarian cooking show, we may have just gotten our wish. Quivers, the co-host to shock jock Howard Stern, has the both the look, personality and celebrity status to make veg mainstream–daytime or prime-time.

Meatless Monday Recipe–Art Smith Vegan Fried Chicken

Today is the last Meatless Monday recipe before Thanksgiving and what better way to celebrate a holiday tradition than with a traditional meal of fried NOT-chicken!

Guaranteed to put KFC to shame, this vegan fried chicken doesn’t involve birds being scalded in hot water or their throats slit (a nice image to accompany while eating real chicken, though), but it does involve Gardein faux chicken fillets, Chick’n Scallopini, available from natural and veg-friendly stores like Whole Foods. This recipe if so perfectly put together, you could probably even substitute another vegetarian chicken if Gardein is no where to be found.

Michelle Obama

As part of her Let’s Move! initiative, First Lady Michelle Obama is expected to make an announcement on Monday about a program that will put 5,000 salad bars in schools across the U.S.

The campaign is not expected to move without opposition, though, primarily because of the USDA nutrition tracking rules and local health inspectors, reports Grist.org.

As Jamie Oliver learned when he tried to transform a Virginia town’s diet, the USDA has some strict rules about what qualifies for nutritious food (French fries are definitely okay) and schools won’t be open to the plan if they cannot get proper reimbursement.

A few school districts, Philadelphia, Austin, Tex., and Montgomery County, Md, have already decided they will not welcome the bars once the initiative starts.

There is also the question of sanitation.

Simone Reyes’ Package For Vegetarianism (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, November 19th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Reality TV, Videos.

In case you missed the recent episode of “Running Russell Simmons,” here’s the clip that was shown where Simmons’ assistant, Simone Reyes, participated in a PETA demonstration against meat earlier this summer.

Reyes, a vegan and animal rights activist, got doused in red body paint and wrapped in Saran Wrap to give a shocking view that meat in grocery stores isn’t that different from human flesh.

Tune in on Tuesdays at 9/8 C on the Oxygen Channel to see more of Reyes.
