If you’re a Texan, what character of the state do you most associated yourself with?

Probably not the steakhouses, but that’s okay, because you’re in good company, as Lauren Bush says being Texan may have more to do with what you put on your body and not in it.

“I love jeans and denim — I think that’s probably my most stereotypically Texan trait,” the co-founder of FEED Projects, a non-profit designed to help fund UN programs for hunger around the world.

If you’re a true greenie, you’ll want to grab a pair of organic denim jeans, since it takes almost 2/3 of a pound of pesticide to produce one pair of conventional ones. Everything should be bigger in Texas, but not the carbon footprint!

So where does Lauren eat in Houston to avoid the steakhouses?

Alicia Silverstone Shares Favorite Eco-Friendly Fall Items

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion.

Alicia Silverstone is guest blogging at VegNews, and she’s sharing some of her favorite veg and eco-friendly items for fall.

“I’ve seen some great, eco-friendly pieces this season! I love when mainstream companies that are not vegan at all come out with kind products—progress. And if we all support their kinder products, they’ll be more inclined to stop using leather and other nasty materials.”

Some of Silverstone’s faves are completely vegan, while she’s encouraging other companies to expand their cruelty-free selection by giving their more ethical products more exposure.

One piece you may find tucked in her closet (if she’s not currently wearing it), is the Cowl neck tunic w/thumb hole sleeve by Eco Skin that is 92% hemp and 8% spandex. And if you like the tunic below, you’ll love the company’s green initiatives.

Diane Keaton makes time for community activism in between raising children and reciting lines on screen. These are just as equally important as her acting, as she told MSNBC her outside interests were included as goals for her future career.

“I’m on the board of the Los Angeles Conservancy. I care about buildings and I care about restoring buildings and I care about protecting buildings from being torn down. I’m an animal advocate. I’m on the board of the Helen Woodward Animal Center, which is down in San Diego, a leading proponent of the no-kill situation for dogs and pets and people, adopt a dog, you know.”

The Los Angeles Conservancy has worked to defend some of the historic areas as LA designated through HPOZ, or Historic Preservation Overlay Zones. At times, some residents have fought HPOZ, stating it hurts their ability to make a building more eco-friendly, but according to the Conservancy, just the opposite is true.

“We’ve all seen how drastic alterations, teardowns, and McMansions can destroy a historic neighborhood’s unique character.”

Jane Goodall. 50 Years At Gombe.

Has it really been 50 years since Jane Goodall stepped on the grounds of Gombe, leading to decades of research and brilliant discovery of how some of the smartest animals on earth function and interact as a community?

The Jane Goodall Institute is celebrating the vegetarian, humanitarian and primate researcher’s life by publishing a followup to the 40th anniversary of the start of her work, Jane Goodall: 40 Years at Gombe.

Since 1999, the Gombe site has expanded its research efforts to humans as well, from AIDS research to improving sanitation, health care and education in the Tanzanian communities nearby and these are highlighted in Jane Goodall: 50 Years At  Gombe.

An environmentally friendly car with a message to save millions of cats and dogs from euthanasia? Only the marketing folks at PETA would think of something so clever!

In addition to a mostly vegan, organic, whole-grain bread company’s English Muffins, Men’s Health Magazine has chosen EDEN Organic company’s beans (EDEN Organic Black Beans, EDEN Organic Spicy Refried Black Beans) found in BPA-free lined cans as one of the “125 Best Foods For Men” in its November 2010 issue.

BPA, short for bisphenol A, is a chemical found in the materials used to line canned food and drink products and an endocrine disruptor associated with abnormalities of the male and female reproductive system as well as some cancers.

For males, BPA has been associated with numerous sexual problems, including reduced sperm count and motility and erectile dysfunction and ejaculation problems. Clearly, any male interested in protecting one of his most valuable assets will want to heed Men’s Health advice immediately.

George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver

From now until February 27th, 2011, the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan will feature an exhibit chronicling the life of what may be one of the first black champions of sustainable farming and most definitely a pioneer for inventors, farmers and conservationists of all races.

According to USA Today, George Washington Carver believed, “nature produces no waste” and neither should humans. He invented hundreds of uses for the peanut, sweet potato and soy bean, using much of what he already had, making instruments from pieces of worn equipment from other tools.

Here are a few ways in which Mr. Carver, the first black American to attend Iowa State Agricultural College, which is now Iowa State University, exemplified sustainable farming, upcycling and using local labor and resources.

Soil Conservation: When the Deep South faced eroding soil from growing cotton, Carver suggested alternative crops of peanuts and soybeans one year and then cotton the next, a method that helped restore nitrogen to the soil.
