Kevin Nealon told the LA Times one of his favorite places to eat in southern California is the The Spot in Hermosa Beach.

“I like the Dear George entree, which is fresh vegetables on rice, but it’s the sauce that makes it special. They also do great vegetarian spa tacos.”

The Spot was featured on the Travel Channel’s “Burger Paradise” for its veggie burger packed with vegetables, rice and soy, topped with a hearty helping of avocado.

The Dear George is one of several entrees on The Spot’s “Inflation Busters,” menu, along with a “Dear Bubba,” “Dear Lance,” “Dear Patrick,” “Dear Joe,” and “Dear John.” The “Dear” selections consists of economical, basic plant based choices like beans, rice and tofu mixed with a savory sauce.

Lion Resting

A restaurant near Phoenix, Arizona has put lion burgers on the menu in celebration of the World Cup soccer games in Africa, reports the New York Daily News.

Can’t see why a colored black and white popcorn ball wouldn’t do the trick, but okay.

“We thought that since the World Cup was in Africa … that the lion burger might be interesting for some of our more adventurous customers,” said owner Cameron Selogie.

This creative thinking has gotten Il Vinaio 250 (so far) angry e-mails from animal rights activists and outcries from regular customers.

Casey Affleck told USA Today he has plans to open a restaurant in Los Angeles.

The vegan of 12 years joked that if you order a meat dish in front of him, he’ll “think so much less of you.”

Seen here is a video Affleck recorded explaining why he went vegan.  He explains that although it was hard finding suitable food and clothing over a decade ago, so much has changed now. Could this be due to an increase in the demand for vegetarian products?

A report in 2003 by Natural Foods Merchandiser revealed sales of vegetarian products increased by 20 to 40 percent annually over a period of 5 years. In 1996, U.S. sales of vegetarian foods were $3.1 million. By 2001, those sales were $1.25 billion!

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Indian energy major Reliance Industries, arrives to address the annual shareholders meeting in Mumbai June 18, 2010. Forbes has compiled a short list of where the wealthy like Oprah, Donald Trump and Ted Turner eat. Mukesh Ambani, head of the Reliance Group, is a vegetarian who is said to frequent Cafe Mysore in Mumbai, a restaurant for southern Indian food.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Ted Turner, who founded Ted’s Montana Grill, serving up bison, chicken, beef and who knows what other animal that walked on four legs. Ironically, Turner has started the Green Restaurant Revolution, where he pitches ideas for making food establishments more sustainable.

Ted’s restaurant menu is printed on recycled paper, soft drinks come in recycled plastic bottles and to-go silverware is crafted from potatoes. That’s great, but one more idea would go a long way in making Ted’s Grill more green:

Start a Meatless Monday!

Good Housekeeping has named Rudi’s Organic Buns as the best choice for a whole wheat hamburger bun.

Of course, we know you’ll only be putting veggie burgers between slices of the company’s organic breads, some of which are gluten-free, most of which are also vegan, but there are a few breads–the Honey Sweet Whole Wheat, European Multigrain, Spelt Tortillas and Whole Spelt Tortillas–that contain honey.

Friday at 9PM the Discovery Channel will feature Kentucky based Bourbon Barrel Foods in an episode of How It’s Made. The company makes soy sauce from Kentucky grown, non GMO soybeans, soft red winter wheat, and limestone filtered Kentucky spring water. The soybean is aged in repurposed bourbon barrels.

Besides using local ingredients and used materials, Bourbon Barrels has a Worcestershire sauce that is vegetarian! If you didn’t know already, most Worcestershire sauces contain anchovies and are definitely not veggie friendly.

“Getting the chance to be on this show, I was beside myself,” Bourbon Barrel Foods owner Matt Jamie told the Louisville Kentucky Courier Journal.

Hooters Girls–Boobs Clean Lube With Project Pantyhose

(Photo by Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images) The Hooters girls are attempting to offset that horrible ungreen practice they promote of eating chicken wings by helping to clean up the Gulf Oil Spill. It seems the pantyhose the ladies wear are good for something other than showing off great calves, and all 380 Hooters restaurants are asking employees to donate their used industrial strength pantyhose for Project Pantyhose.

The goal is to collect more than 100,000 pairs which groups Matter of Trust and Indigo Ocean will use to create booms that are 15 miles in length and potentially soak up 1 million gallons of oil. Great job ladies and looking great, especially in comparison to some other Hooters “girls” below. (more…)
