Best Vegetarian News Stories Of 2010

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 31st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink.

Bill Clinton

Here are a few of the top vegetarian stories featuring the famous and those who rose to fame because of their stance on food, animals and the environment.

10. The Apprentice is vegetarian. Brandy Kuentzel ran an eco-friendly cupcake truck before she was hired as Trump’s leading business lady. She revealed to us during an interview that she’d love to host a show with her best friend about all things sustainable. That show can’t come soon enough as we need some anti Paula Deen sausage segments on daytime.

9. A vegan baker wins “Cupcake Wars.” Chloe Coscarelli showed the world vegan is tasty. Very tasty. She won the war on the Food Network with her recipes for Ginger Nutmeg Spice with Date Caramel Drizzle, Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake, Crème-filled Chocolate Orange with Candied Orange Peel, and Raspberry Tiramisu.

8. Bob Harper invites “The Biggest Loser” contestants in home for vegan meal. Yum. Everybody was a winner on that episode, including Harper’s fans, who could download the recipes from his website. Harper showed America one of the best ways to lose weight healthily without sacrificing good grub.

Lipton tea

Tea has been around for centuries. So why would Lipton conduct research on animals to examine its safety?

It was all a plan to prove bogus health claims made by the company that failed to show any evidence of being accurate.

According to PETA, investigators subjected animals to the following experiments:

Rabbits: “fed a high-fat, cholesterol-laden diet, leading to extreme hardening of the arteries. They were then fed tea to see if it affected the lesions that formed on the animals’ arteries. After the experiment, the rabbits’ heads were cut off.”

Mice: “bred to suffer from a painful bowel inflammation were fed tea ingredients in order to see if the tea had any effect on their condition. After the test, experimenters killed the mice by suffocating them or breaking their necks.”

Big Cats Gone Wild. Tigers Love Catnip Too (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, December 23rd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Humor, Videos.

Big Cat Rescue is a non-profit sanctuary for rescued exotic felines. It’s home to 14 of the 35 species of wild cats, housing over 100 residents of tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx, ocelots and more, rescued from abused and abandonment situations where they were held as pets, performing animals or being hunted for their fur.

The organization has a YouTube channel with several videos showing its tenants in action.

Apparently, tigers and other giant kitties like catnip just like housecats do. All but one lion named Joseph went absolutely nuts when given the catnip. Knowing he’d make a fool of himself all over the Internet, Joseph refrained. He must be the smart kind of guy who never puts embarrassing drunk photos of himself on Facebook.

The active ingredient in catnip, nepatalactone, is very close to a chemical found in the urine of female cats and some experts believe this is why unneutered males may react more strongly to it than females and sterilized males.

Besides gender, genetics and environmental factors are also thought to be responsible for the difference in reaction.

Duff Goldman Uses Cage-Free Eggs For Charm City Cakes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, December 23rd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Chefs, Food & Drink, Recipes.

Duff Goldman

Duff Goldman, star of Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes,” has made the announcement that he’s switching to cage-free eggs for his company, Charm City Cakes.

Goldman joins fellow celebrity chef Guy Fieri and dozens of national retailers and franchises like Quizno’s and Denny’s to source eggs from farms that don’t confine hens in cages so small, they aren’t even able to spread their wings. Cage-free hens have 2-3 times more space than caged hens.

“Charm City Cakes is pleased to have switched to only using cage-free eggs, which is a great way to improve animal welfare and meet our customers’ expectations for being socially responsible,” said Duff.

Joan Rivers Supports NYC Law Against Prolonged Dog Chaining

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Politicians.

Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers has written to New York city council member Christine C. Queen, urging the passage of a law proposed by councilman Peter Vallone, Jr. that would forbid keeping a dog chained for more than three hours during a 12 hour period.

“I hope this Tethering Bill passes not just for the sake of the poor dogs tied up outside in the cold, but for the sake of the sons of bitches* who do this—because what I’d do to the creeps would be far worse than what any police officer would do!” Rivers wrote in the letter.

Almost four years ago, Vallone called for this type of measure, saying, “There’s no reason to have your dogs chained up for more than three hours. They become more aggressive, they bite more, they’re nervous, and they’re scared.”

The top NSA and CIA agent hired to protect Chuck Bartowski is now on a mission to protect millions of unwanted dogs and cats who are euthanized in shelters every  year.

Yvonne Strahovski, who plays agent Sarah Walker on the NBC series “Chuck,” is starring in PETA’s “Angels for Adoption” Ads.

“There are just so many dogs that are just as gorgeous—whether they’re mixed or purebred or whatever—they’re all gorgeous, and they all have personalities, and they all need a home,” Strahovski says. “I come home from a hard day at work, and I see these two happy faces when I walk in the door, and it’s unconditional love. There’s something like … 7 to 8 million animals that are homeless, and half of those dogs get euthanized, and it’s really sad.”

Below is Strahovski’s exclusive video interview with PETA.

Obama Signs Truth In Fur Labeling Act

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Fur, Politicians.

Barack Obama

December is proving to be nothing but “lame” on Capitol Hill, especially when it comes to animal welfare laws.

Just days after banning crush videos, President Obama has signed the Truth in Fur Labeling Act (H.R. 2480), which made its final route through Congress in the Senate earlier this month.

The new law closes the loophole in an already existing law that allows real fur to go unlabelled as such if the garment is worth $150 or less.

Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton has been chosen as person of the year by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Earlier this year, the former president of the United States announced he’d gone vegan to slim down for his daughter Chelsea’s wedding. He lost 24 pounds, but kept his vegan diet because he’s motivated by studies showing most people who eat a plant-based diet can prevent and reverse heart disease.

“Studies have proved that vegetarians and vegans live, on average, six to 10 years longer than meat-eaters,” PETA writes on its website.
