Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell is a year older, and unfortunately, Americans will no longer be able to follow him into his golden years on American Idol now that he’s left the show.

However, animal lovers know Cowell never gave an animal a bad review about its performance, numerously citing his love for pets and being the face behind several campaigns regarding their welfare, such as not leaving dogs in hot cars and working with the World Society for the Protection of Animals in hopes of getting universal protection for them.

PETA decided to celebrate Cowell’s 51st birthday by spaying and neutering 51 animals in their “Spay and Neuter Immediately, Please!” (SNIP) mobile veterinary clinic.

The young lady who was video taped throwing several puppies into a river to drown will not face any charges because police say she is too young to appear before a judge.

Jason Mraz is up to nothing but good for the environment, as always. Besides offsetting the electricity at his home and studio with solar power, he’s currently on a three year transition to turn his farm from a conventional avocado one to an organic property offering a multitude of food crops.

On the farm, Mraz, named one of the top 40 farmers under 40, might be caught wearing bamboo and cotton tees available from a company at which he serves as vice president.

“I’m not a brand whore. I’ve always been a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy,” Mraz told the Huffington Post. “These days I prefer organic fibers because they feel better on my skin. Recently I co-founded BlendApparel.com, a green t-shirt company with transformative messages, that we hope keep our conversation going about our ever changing environment — Tees intended to inspire and empower the people, etc.”

Every animal needs a “whisperer.” Ellen DeGeneres and Ginnifer Goodwin may not know all the inner workings of the turkey mind yet, but theses ladies do know enough about the animals to realize they’re incredible sentient beings who deserve their own Thanksgiving feast and not spread across the table as one.

Ellen is serving as the Adopt-A-Turkey ambassador for Farm Sanctuary’s annual drive that raises money to care for turkeys on the grounds and last year, Miss Goodwin had the privilege of serving as bird publicist.

Between the two turkey whisperers, who would you rather…

Chef Tim Love has anything but love for the vegetarian diet. Hoping to silence the veggie hoopla, he hopped onto CNN’s 5@5 to list the reasons why he thought cream of broccoli can’t compete with chicken fried steak. However, Jane Velez-Mitchell, host of HLN’s Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell jumped into the ring and fired back with five punches of her own as to why veg is the only way to go.

When Love said:

“Eating vegetarian may seem like the healthier option (and, probably, often is), but when it comes down to it, meat, in moderation, provides much needed protein, iron and amino acids. As long as you don’t go overboard and eat one of those 15-pound burgers you see on TV, you should be fine.”

Jane said:

“If huge amounts of protein were the key to perfect health, America would be the healthiest nation on earth because we eat a lot more meat than people in most other countries. But, we’re not the healthiest. Two thirds of us are overweight or obese and the crisis is accelerating. The drumbeat of protein is a selling tool – pure and simple – and we’ve all bought into it. Americans are getting more protein than they need.”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 in Actors, Animal Issues, Children.

Leonardo DiCaprio has kicked off International Fund for Animal Welfare’s Animal Action Week, which is meant to get children involved with getting educated about animal welfare issues. The IFAW’s Animal Action Week is an 18 year old tradition that runs through October 10th, 2010.

This year’s theme for Animal Action Week is “Born to be Wild,” and it highlights the issue of tigers becoming extinct in the wild due to human influenced destruction like poaching and loss of habitat.

Tigers are dangerously close to vanishing forever,” said Mr. DiCaprio, an IFAW Honorary Board Member. “If we don’t want our children to grow up in a world where tigers are extinct, the time for action is now.”
