To prepare for the role in Stone, where a convict is eligible for early release for covering up the murder of his parents with a fire, Edward Norton traveled to talk to those behind real bars for answers. Real prisoners provided so much insight, Norton said 60% of the lines in the movie were changed based on their answers. If you’re looking to stay out of trouble, for example, be a vegetarian.

“At one point one of these guys was talking about a fight, and how he just had to let it happen,” Norton told Frothygirlz. “He said, “I’m three months out from review, I can’t get a ticket, I can’t get anything. When you are short time, you have to be a vegetarian.”

“I said, “What?” and he said,” A vegetarian, you can’t have a beef with nobody.”

While veggie has taken a place as slang in the slammer, those avoiding meat may be happier in general than those who don’t, thus making it less likely they’ll be picking a “beef” with anyone and jeopardizing a lot of things, including early parole.

Guinness World’s Longest Cat Stewie May Teach Animal Welfare (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 22nd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Offbeat, Videos.

Stewie, a 5-year old Maine Coone, has just made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Longest Cat. At 48 1/2 inches, Stewie is just a tad over 4 feet, making him as tall as your average 10 year old boy and long enough to ride the exciting rides at the carnival.

Stewie’s owner, Robin Hendrickson of Reno, Nevada, says Stewie’s fame and presence make him the perfect candidate to teach children and others about caring for animals. For some children, it will at least scare them into being nice to kitties.

“Whenever you see an item on sale in the produce department that your family enjoys, buy double of that. Bring it home, salt some water, put in the vegetable of choice, count to 30, take it out, cold-shock it, put it in a big plastic food storage bag and throw it in the freezer. You make your own homemade frozen veggies. They are even better than what you get in the store. You can tailor the cut or size when you are putting them away, and, especially if you’re shopping at farm stands, you’re never going to get that flavor of summertime corn unless you’re bringing it home and scraping it off the cob yourself.”

HOLLYWOOD - SEPTEMBER 27: Actresses Jenna Fischer (L) and Angela Kinsey arrive at the NIVEA for Men premiere party for 'The Office' held at Boulevard 3 on September 27, 2007 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Mark Davis/Getty Images for NIVEA)

The Office‘s Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer admit they both own pretty vocal cats.

“I’ve never had a cat who meows and chatters as much as he does,” Fischer told PEOPLEPets.com at the La Femme International Film Festival Celebrity Gala. “He’s a very vocal cat.”

Kinsey, whose character on the show is an eccentric cat owning woman, says her cat, Otter, sounds like he is always on the prowl for a female. “He’s chatty, but it kind of scares me,” she said. “It sounds like maybe a cat in heat. That’s just him [being] happy.”

Any cat owner knows felines have a way of communicating with humans, but is it actual language they’re getting across or mere vocal utterances? Regardless of the answer to that question, a graduate student at Cornell University found domesticated cat noises seem to be successful in one area in particular–getting the human to respond as needed.

In a study described as one where “no cats were harmed in the experiment, although a few human eardrums were stretched,” Nicholas Nicastro compiled dozens of vocal samples from cats and played them for human volunteers who were asked to rate them for pleasantness and appeal and examined what acoustic features accompanied each sound.

Chimpanzee “Pet” In Kansas City Goes On Rampage (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 21st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Videos.

In a story that could have ended as tragic as the Charla Nash and the Old Navy Chimp one, a chimpanzee went on a rampage in Kansas City after breaking out of the home he was kept in as a pet.

Chimps. Should. Not. Be. Kept. As. Pets.

The 300 pound animal attacked police officer’s cars, smashing the windows. Although a tranquilizer was not able to stop him in his tracks, the owner’s coaxing made the “pet” turn around and go back in the house.

Corey Feldman Served First Vegetarian Meal By Michael Jackson

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 21st, 2010 in Actors, Animal Issues, Food & Drink.

Corey Feldman was introduced to vegetarianism by Michael Jackson. Literally.

In an interview with Las Vegas Weekly, the actor and musician revealed how the King of Pop served him his first vegetarian meal and how Feldman’s mother got him acquainted with the animal welfare side of things.

“At at early age, I became a vegetarian. There was a lot of resistance from family — “It will stunt your growth. It can’t be healthy.” But it started on The Goonies with Steven Spielberg. And with Michael Jackson. His chef cooked me my first-ever vegetarian meal. Michael Jackson presented it to me! Going vegetarian at such a young age, it was a stance for myself. “I’m doing it. I don’t believe in eating animals. You can survive in other ways.”
