Food & Wine Magazine is the latest in the growing pile of mainstream food media to announce that vegetarianism, if even part-time, is a trend worth following.

The magazine’s blog, Mouthing Off, recently discussed Forks Over Knives, a documentary debuting next year featuring the lives of several people who switch to a plant-based diet to transform their health. And in last month’s Trendspotting, the theme was Macho Vegetables.

Sure, actors and actresses in tinseltown may promote bike riding, using tap water and recycling, but how does the manner in which they earn their paycheck to buy those organic cotton shirts stack up when it comes to being environmentally friendly?

Greenlit is a new documentary which follows Indie filmmaker Miranda Bailey (executive producer of The Squid and the Whale) during the production of The River Why, starring Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) as the film crew attempts to keep its footprint low with the help of an environment consultant  for the entertainment industry who’s been featured in popular media outlets like The Hollywood Reporter.

During the film’s opening, Bailey says that although she’s eaten her share of tofu, she doesn’t think that being eco-friendly is a priority in the film business. Data examining the film industry’s energy use supports that.

Mary Nichols, from the California Resources Board, states during Greenlit that the film and television industry is a “major consumer of all kinds of energy and fuels and they still put out a lot of waste–and not just in the form of maybe movies we don’t like.”

The report from the Resources Board concluded that Hollywood trailed closely behind the petroleum industry as being one of southern California’s top air polluters.

Hair:
“I love Original Sprout because it is not tested on animals, is totally vegan, and completely natural. I also use some L’Anza products which according to the PETA website, aren’t tested on animals either. I used to use Redken, which makes a lot of beauty products, but have since discontinued as soon as I found out that they do practice animal testing. Such a shame. I hope they stop. (Vegetarian Star note: Original Sprout not only happens to be vegan and cruelty-free, it also produces a line of hair products suitable for maintaining and caring for African-American textured hair.)

Face and Teeth:
“My secret beauty ingredient is baking soda. It’s so inexpensive and works so well on so many different areas. I add it into my face wash for a great exfoliating agent and also dip my toothbrush into it while brushing my teeth to help keep them white. And, it’s gentle enough that I can do both of these things twice a day and it’s not too harsh.”

Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal isn’t worried about looking good for the nude scenes in “Love and Other Drugs” because he’s been eating a diet filled with plenty of fresh vegetables from his own garden.

“I don’t follow a special diet but I try and eat well, so I grow my own vegetables,” Gyllenhaal said.

The next best thing to growing your own is buying veggies from a neighbor or local community garden. San Francisco’s mayor and the city’s planning department has just introduced an ordinance to permit gardens in all areas of the city and to allow sale of veggies from that garden.

The top NSA and CIA agent hired to protect Chuck Bartowski is now on a mission to protect millions of unwanted dogs and cats who are euthanized in shelters every  year.

Yvonne Strahovski, who plays agent Sarah Walker on the NBC series “Chuck,” is starring in PETA’s “Angels for Adoption” Ads.

“There are just so many dogs that are just as gorgeous—whether they’re mixed or purebred or whatever—they’re all gorgeous, and they all have personalities, and they all need a home,” Strahovski says. “I come home from a hard day at work, and I see these two happy faces when I walk in the door, and it’s unconditional love. There’s something like … 7 to 8 million animals that are homeless, and half of those dogs get euthanized, and it’s really sad.”

Below is Strahovski’s exclusive video interview with PETA.

Obama Signs Truth In Fur Labeling Act

Barack Obama

December is proving to be nothing but “lame” on Capitol Hill, especially when it comes to animal welfare laws.

Just days after banning crush videos, President Obama has signed the Truth in Fur Labeling Act (H.R. 2480), which made its final route through Congress in the Senate earlier this month.

The new law closes the loophole in an already existing law that allows real fur to go unlabelled as such if the garment is worth $150 or less.

Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton has been chosen as person of the year by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Earlier this year, the former president of the United States announced he’d gone vegan to slim down for his daughter Chelsea’s wedding. He lost 24 pounds, but kept his vegan diet because he’s motivated by studies showing most people who eat a plant-based diet can prevent and reverse heart disease.

“Studies have proved that vegetarians and vegans live, on average, six to 10 years longer than meat-eaters,” PETA writes on its website.

Former Miss World Rosanna Davison recently interviewed with the Daily Mail, which actually grilled her on some serious topics like whether or not she’d had a boob job and why she was seen promoting pepperoni pizza if she claimed to be vegetarian or vegan with natural boobs.

Actually, we’re kidding about the breast part. At least some of it. To find out if she really did get surgery, go here.

A series of ads were displayed on buses in the UK that read, “A vegan diet is so much better for your health, for the environment generally and, as no animals are harmed, it’s cruelty free.”

But what does the daughter of Chris de Burgh, who sang the famous song Lady In Red, say about making vegetarians see red when they view her meaty pizza ad?
