An Evening with 'Parks and Recreation'

Aziz Ansari, star of the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation will be hosting this year’s MTV Movie Awards. From an interview with the New York Times, it sounds as if Ansari might be a vegan.

“Mr. Ansari made no apologies to the crowd at the theater, where the $5 tickets were cheaper and the jokes more meandering than they would be at those future gigs. As he had said that afternoon over lunch at a vegan restaurant in the Silver Lake neighborhood, “I even tell the audience, ‘You’re getting an inferior version of the joke so, I can work on it myself.”

Here’s a video from the Funny or Die series with Sarah Silverman, P. Diddy and other celebrities discussing Aziz’s life and the “struggles” he’s had to endure before rising to stardom to host the MTV Movie Awards.

Are holier than thou vegans not practicing what they preach?

Christina Pirello, vegan chef and author, recently discussed how some of the most compassionate people in the world–vegans–are not so compassionate when it comes sharing their lifestyle on others.

Drawing on the most radical example of a Sex and the City scene where an activist throws paint on someone to the seemingly harmless trash talk like that found in the Skinny Bitch books, Pirello thinks it’s time everyone lighten up and work harder to include others, versus applying strict labels and making them feel bad.

Earthlings has inspired many to go vegetarian and rethink their ideas about animals being used for human convenience. The director of the film, Shaun Monson, attended the World Fest 2010, an Earth Day festival in Los Angeles, California where he was briefly interviewed on vegetarianism, myths about protein and more.

Monson also touches on how humans have empathy for some creatures, like other humans and pets, but not farm animals.

“I suspect that if we view any expression of life with apathy that will mirror itself in humanity,” Monson says and cites a quote from Leo Tolstoy that says, “As long as their are slaughterhouses, there will be battlefields,” tying the link between killing animals and aggressive and general malcontent humans have towards other humans.

“The Cove” Won’t Be Showing In Tokyo After All

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, June 4th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Film & TV.

Tribeca Cinemas Presents A Screening Of The Cove

Although The Cove was scheduled to screen in theatres in Tokyo, protests from groups in the city caused those venues to cancel the showing of the Oscar winning documentary about the killing of dolphins in Taiji that are later sold as unhealthy, mercury contaminated meat for human consumption.

Another cinema, Osaka, has followed the Tokyo theatres and cancelled its plans to show the film as well.

Director Louie Psihoyos spoke about the cancellation, as quoted in Black Book Magazine:

“It’s unfortunate that a few extremists scared one of the Tokyo venues from showing The Cove but I’m confident that the Japanese people will now be even more curious to know what these few people are trying so hard to hide. The extremists themselves are scared of the truth being known because what they are trying to hide cannot survive debate.”

The Japanese distributor, Unplugged, still plans to show the film in Japanese cities that are willing to do so.

Business 2 The Daily Mail has a “Guess that celebrity diva” article, featuring some picky stars like Victoria Beckham and her requests for specifically chopped produce from specific stores. One vegetarian musician has some pretty strict demands, not only about eating, but also forbids animal hides in anything– vehicle or room. “…won’t travel in a stretch limousine with leather seats and issues blanket bans on animal skin coverings of any kind. Even fake animal print is unacceptable.” “…insists on full vegetarian catering served on an 8ft banqueting table covered in a white tablecloth.” Can you guess that vegetarian? Answer below. (more…)

Poker player Annie LePage makes raw mango and coconut sushi in this video where rice is substituted for a nut pate in the recipe.

LePage has her daughter to thank for going vegan, as she says in a new PETA PSA for vegetarianism.

Given the fact she has children, LePage is extremely upset that companies like McDonald’s market their less than healthy and cruelly sourced products to kids.

“If kids really saw what goes on behind the scene, instead of that silly clown, I don’t think they would want to eat it so much,” she says in the PSA, which can be seen below. Grab a pen and jot down the ingredients to the veggie sushi, which are displayed across the screen as LePage prepares it.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, June 4th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Recipes.

Tofu

Packaged foods are not always associated with health, but in a world with college classes, over time, children and two working parent families, the idyllic scene of a home cooked meal over a kitchen stove with fresh vegetables picked straight from the garden doesn’t always screen regularly in everyone’s homes.

Prevention has named their 49 best ready to eat foods for those that need convenience, but don’t want to increase their health care costs from the consequential high blood pressure, obesity or other ailments related to diet. As expected, plant based foods like whole wheat pasta made the list and tofu is #7, when judged by a panel of nutrition experts, specifically Nasoya Tofu Plus with extra vitamins.
