Max Lugavere and Jason Silva are the hosts of Current Tv’s Unseen, a show where viewers are invited to ditch the tourist pamphlets and take a look at a country from the eyes of a local.

On a recent episode, the two gentlemen featured Spain, and an event where locals showed up to throw tomatoes at each other, La Tomatina.

They compared the popularity of the tradition to the running of the bulls, Lugavere adding, “without the animal cruelty.”

Does Lugavere have a heart for animal rights?

He and Silva were interviewed by Alternative Apparel, where they discussed encouraging greener ways of living, like refusing to purchase food from factory farms.

Granted, living greener usually also means not wasting food, a lot of which is done in this celebration.

Watch the clip for the cruelty-free tomato tradition (minus the use of a ham to start the celebration) above with locals chanting, “There’s no tomatoes. We Want Tomatoes” and slipping and sliding in red pulp.

Reports from The Philadelphia Inquirer say Chrissie Hynde will protest outside the McDonald’s at 40th and Walnut Streets in University City in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Thursday, May 27, for the PETA McCruelty “I’m Hatin’ It” campaign, aimed at the fast food giant for refusing to switch to a more humane way of slaughtering chickens, something its European outlets have already done.

The protest comes just days after McDonald’s made another decision that lowered its favorability with animal rights activists when it refused to switch even 5% of its eggs to cage-free.

Hynde will be present to pass out Unhappy Meals, featuring creepy looking horror movie Ronald McDonalds, mangled plastic chickens and ketchup packets mimicking fake blood.

As a kid, Colorado representative Jared Polis never brought a Lunchable to school for lunch.

Nor did he dine on a gourmet meal of beef jerky, processed packaged gas station stick cheese and fruit rollups for desserts.

He described his typical lunchbox as being filled with yogurt, celery, carrots, dried fruit and almonds.

Maybe that’s why he’s so adamant about getting his Healthy School Meals Act passed, a bill that would give schools more money to incorporate vegetarian and non-dairy items on the menu.

“They don’t get the kind of choices I did,” Polis was quoted as saying by Westword. “Many times, it’s their most substantial meal of the day.”

As an adult, Polis nibbles on Nori in between congressional meetings.

Creative, vegetarian and vegan lunch ideas can be found at Vegan Lunch Box, a blog written by mom Jennifer McCann, who’s made contributions to well read magazines like Vegetarian Times.

McCann’s ideas are great for kids, but big kids can also take advantage of her suggestions, which are accompanied by colorful photos of often Bento Box style arrangements of food.

McCann’s book, Vegan Lunchbox, as well as her cookbook that includes vegan cuisines from Japanese, Moroccan and other regions, Vegan Lunchbox Around The World, is a good  supplement to the blog containing recipes like Buckwheat Tabbouleh Wraps, Cabbage Rolls with Garbanzo Beans and Magic Loaf Sandwich.

Gordon Ramsay will prepare a vegetarian dinner for the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Tun Razak, and others visiting the Buddhist Maha Vihara temple in Kuala Lumpur for the Wesak Day celebration that celebrates, birth, life, enlightenment, and the passing of a great spiritual leader, Gautama Buddha.

According to The Star,  the chef’s production crew found out about the celebration through a food blogger who had attended a Sri Lankan Fiesta in March.

“Ramsay’s production crew read about it and asked her what other interesting events would be taking place and we told her about the upcoming Wesak Day and soon everything fell into place,” said Leslie Tilak, Buddhist Maha Vihara president.

Ramsay has been spending much time at the temple, learning the cuisine from local chefs, but the dish he will actually prepare for the celebration on the 21st of May is still unknown.

Betty White "Bucks For Balls"

Sitting on the board of directors, Betty White is the face of the latest campaign by Actors and Others for Animals to control the unwanted pet population.

The non-profit organization is asking for donations, and next year, when it reaches its 40th anniversary, the funds will be used to spay and neuter as many animals as possible for free in a campaign titled, “Betty’s Bucks for Balls Spay/Neuter campaign.”

“I am deeply flattered to say the least with all of the wonderful attention I have been receiving lately,” White is quoted as saying. “It certainly makes me feel like one lucky old broad!”

Jelly Belly "Strawberry Daiquiri"

Jelly Belly has a collection of cocktail jelly beans that are legal to consume at the office.

As stated from a press release regarding Jelly Bean Cocktail Classics, “They left out the distilled spirits, so these “mocktails” have all the flavors and none of the hangover.”

Three new flavors, Mojito, Pomegranate and Peach Bellini are joining the already existing drink line of Margarita, Strawberry Daiquiri and Pina Colada in June 2010.

Cocktail jelly beans, like other Jelly Belly flavors, are vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, gelatin-free and OU Kosher.

According to VegBlog, an investigation revealed the beans contains beeswax, so that may make them unacceptable for vegans.

If you believe you suffer from such a condition, there are three tests you can ask your doctor to perform, the Lactose Intolerance Test, the Hydrogen Breath Test, and if you’re a genius infant who happens to have the ability to read gossip blogs, the Stool Acidity Test, all discussed on the Mayo Clinic website.

The Lactose Intolerance Test involves drinking a liquid that has high levels of lactose and getting blood tested two hours later. If your glucose level doesn’t rise, this means the body isn’t digesting and absorbing lactose.

The Hydrogen Breath test is not a sobriety one.

Leona Lewis says she’s happiest when she’s sharing a smooch with her pets, a pig name Melrose, a horse named Goose, and a dog named Misty.

“I dote on them,” said Lewis. “I give them lots of kisses and cuddles.”

According to Contact Music, when Leona’s not singing on stage or in the studio or kissing her pets, she devotes a lot of her time to the World Society for the Protection of Animals because they “campaign to change laws to stop the cruel treatment of animals.”

Last year, Leona teamed up with WSPA to record a PSA, Animals Matters, which educated the public about some of the animal abuses WSPA campaigns against, such as cruelty to animals in the entertainment industry.
