Michael Vick Ed Block Courage Award Ceremony Sparks Protests

NFL: Super Bowl XLIV-Super Bowl Breakfast

Michael Vick was recently awarded the Ed Block courage award for his “sportsmanship” and “courage,” but not everyone who attended the event was supportive.

Several people gathered outside the facility, holding signs that read “No awards for dog killers” and “Cowards abuse animals.”

Each year several players receive the award if they are chosen to be “role models” that “exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage.”

One protester, according to the Baltimore Sun, said, “I find it appalling to give this to someone that has gotten enjoyment from hurting dogs,” she said. “What is he courageous about?”

A spokesman for the foundation awarding Vick, Paul Mittermeier said, “People have the right to voice their opinion.”

Vick has served time in jail for his involvement with dog fighting and has partnered with the Humane Society to discourage dog fighting in communities, especially among youth.

Is it time for activists to let go and focus on other campaigns?

Or is their constant presence in the midst of Vick’s comeback needed as a painful reminder that society should choose better role models.

82nd Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

This year, Woody Harrelson represented the vegetarian actors in the Oscar nominations and over the past years, there have been several meatless celebrities nominated and awarded for their performances on screen.

Forest Whitaker won in the category of Best Actor for The Last King of Scotland (2006) and Diane Keaton won for Best Actress in Annie Hall (1977).

Some celebrities deserve an award for perserving through all the loses, like Kate Winslet.

Says VegNews:

“Although it may have taken six nominations before finally winning that golden statue, Kate Winslet’s vegetarian lifestyle must have given her the energy to continually tackle challenging roles and complex characters.”

Kate was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Sense and Sensibility, Best Actress in Titanic, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Iris, Best Actress in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Best Actress in Little Children, before she won for Best Actress in The Reader.

“Beyond The Pole” Combines Laughter And Green Education

Beyond The Pole

Beyond The Pole

Thursday is the Green Revolution day at the D.C. Independent Film Festival.

Beyond the Pole will be screening at the U.S. Navy Memorial Heritage Center, Burke Theater, 701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW.

The film features two friends as they attempt to make an organic, carbon-neutral, vegetarian trip to the North Pole in hopes of getting into the Guinness Book of Records.

You know, just like the goal you had last year.

As expected, things don’t run as smoothly as planned, but maybe that’s what draws in an audience.

“The comedy route gets more traction. If you have a point of view and send yourself up a bit, you draw people in,” director David L. Williams told Reuters.

“We are not being a doctor saying you have to do a list of things — one to 10. We are trying to reach an audience that is not inherently green-minded and somehow make an emotional connection.”

Will Beyond the Pole have you in stitches as you leave the theatre with a greener mindset?

Bob Barker Priceless Memories Book Signing

PETA would have been satisfied with a mini freezer and a microwave, but Bob Barker paid over 2 million dollars to renovate a building in Hollywood where the animal rights group is opening their new headquarters.

There will certainly be a lot of frozen tofu dinners in the office fridge, though.

According to the San Fransisco Chronicle, The LA location will be home to the group’s media, marketing, youth outreach and campaign departments.

The opening ceremony ribbon will be cut today at Sunset Boulevard and Alvarado Street.

SELF Magazine Party Celebrating the July 2009 LA Issue

On a recent episode of The Biggest Loser, coach Jillian Michaels congratulated a contestant for a job well done when he ditched the vending machine snacks and opted for a veggie sub sandwich at Subway instead.

Biggest Loser contestants have some great support on the show.

Michaels is a pescatarian, while Bob Harper is totally veg!

Harper pitches a vegetarian diet to the contestants on the show, or at least one that’s primarily plant based.

“I always bring up the option of a vegetable-based diet, which I call Diet A, and talk about the many easy ways to get protein, such as from beans, tofu, broccoli, and quinoa,” he said. “For the contestants who insists they need their meat, I have Diet B, which is still very heavy on veggies.”

Diet A sounds like the best way to be the biggest winner!

Kelly Bensimon “Playboy” Shoot Took Too Many Chicken Wings

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 in Not So Vegetarian, Reality TV.

Brooklyns Finest New York City.

Kelly Bensimon revealed the disgusting details of how she prepped for her photo shoot for Playboy.

The Real Housewives of New York City star told US Magazine that she ate nothing but chicken to make her body look full and voluptuous.

“I literally drank beer — Corona — and ate chicken wings for two weeks!”

Bensimon said that between running and riding horses, she gets really thin, but wanted a different image for the cover.

“I’m pretty full in those pictures, but I like it. That’s really me. That’s what I look like. It’s real,” said Bensimon.

“I want people to enjoy their life, not be starving and going to get a colonic because they think they need to be skinnier.”

Playboy is suppose to turn people on, but the thought of eating a potentially salmonella covered leg ripped from a cute little bird at a factory farm sounds like a real turnoff.

The next time she aims for the full figured Anna Nicole look, Kelly should just load up on some tomato pie dipped in garlic flavored olive oil.
