Snowboard Ladies Halfpipe - Day 7

It’s always great to learn about the dozens of successful vegetarian athletes, and veggie newcomer Hannah Teter has just made the meatless world proud.

Teter took the Silver Medal in the Women’s snowboard half pipe competition at the Vancouver Olympic games.

She’s been a vegetarian for about a year and says she couldn’t feel better.

“I feel stronger than I’ve ever been, mentally, physically, and emotionally,” Teter told Huffington Post. “My plant-based diet has opened up more doors to being an athlete. It’s a whole other level that I’m elevating to. I stopped eating animals about a year ago, and it’s a new life. I feel like a new person, a new athlete.”

Through her charity, Hannah’s Gold, Teter was able to extend the privilege of having access to quality food by making it easier for people in Kenya to grow their own food.

“One of the first projects we did was to provide Kirindon with basic farming tools and organic seeds. They have all the land and decent soil, but they just don’t have the tools.”

“There is a great variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in season in the winter. Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean you have to give up these foods! Even if it comes from a state or two away, it’s still better than importing fruits from another country, which can raise the cost of the food due to shipping, and it’s not what Mother Nature intended for us to eat in the winter. We need hearty foods that will keep us warm! There are clementine and mandarin oranges, grapefruit, pears, persimmons, lots of root vegetables such as turnips, sweet potatoes, and rutabagas. Leeks, kale, fennel, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, and radicchio!”

Adam Lambert Thoughts On Fur

Cinema Society & Donna Karan Host A Screening Of Happy Tears -After Party

Adam Lambert was interviewed by TMZ (which can be heard here), where he revealed his true feelings (or lack thereof) about animals used for fur.

“I know this is the most un-PC way to put it, but I didn’t kill the thing so I don’t see why I can’t wear it.”

Whoa, there. There are worse phrases than un-PC to describe Mr. Glambert’s attitude.

But wait, there’s more. If you can eat it, might as well wear it.

“It’s like we eat meat, I don’t like cruelty toward animals so anything that can be done to prevent that, but I think fur looks great.”

Note to Adam and everyone else who likes fur but wants to prevent cruelty to animals: Wear a fake!

Hal Sparks Avoiding Vegan Cake

CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY- Los Angeles Premiere

Just when you thought every veg celebrity was camping out at Real Food Daily, there are some looking to avoid it.

But sometimes it’s too good to resist.

When Hal Sparks was asked what his favorite kind of cake was, he answered, “There’s a vegan banana creme cake at Real Food Daily (in Santa Monica) that is great. I’ll have that on occasion when I eat there. Otherwise cake is something I can really do without.”

Hal Sparks has big plans for the year 2010, which include covering as much of the world as possible, making friends and connections on the web and staying away from cake.

“My goal of being on every social-networking site in existence is getting closer every day. This year for me is all about touring, streaming and tweeting . . . and avoiding cake.”

Best of luck to Sparks, but given the insanely deliciousness taste of vegan desserts, his last mentioned goal may not be attainable.

Meat Loaf Sends Back His Meatloaf At BRIT Awards

The Brit Awards - Outside Arrivals

Meat Loaf and Leona Lewis may have eaten the same meal at the BRIT awards in London.

Sources told The Sun, “Meat is a big eater but ironically he doesn’t eat the stuff.”

Meat Loaf reportedly sent his beef loaf back and asked for a vegetarian option.

“I suppose you could say he’d do anything for grub, but he won’t do that.”

If Meat Loaf, born Marvin Lee Aday, really is a hard core vegetarian and activist, he probably warns his driver to watch out for “objects in the rear view mirror” so that they don’t become roadkill.

Hannah Teter won the Silver Medal in the Women’s halfpipe competition in snowboarding this year.

Last year, Teter was honored by having a limited edition Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream flavor, Maple Blondie, named after her.

Like vegetarian Teter, Ben & Jerry’s is interested in improving the world by following more animal friendly practices.

The ice cream giant is in the process of sourcing eggs that come from cage-free farms and is expected to complete the phase in by the end of this year.

The company is also against using recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH), a substance used to produce more milk in dairy cows, and sources their dairy products from family farms.

Stella McCartney–Food Industry Would Disappoint Linda McCartney

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 19th, 2010 in Fashion, Film & TV, Food & Drink.

Stella McCartney Switches On Store Christmas Lights

Food Inc. is the talk of the town among Hollywood greenies like Stella McCartney.

The ethical fashion designer spoke to Black Book Mag about the premiere, where she shared her thoughts on what her mother Linda McCartney would think about it, as well as the state of the food industry today.

Linda was both a vegetarian and activist and founded a line of frozen vegetarian entrees.

“Obviously my mother would have been very saddened the way things have turned out with how we produce our food, so that’s why I feel so motivated by the issues,” Stella said.

“We’re not moving forward in a very positive way. It seems that money really is the root of all evil. It’s scary how the food industry is so intertwined with politics. I guess my mum would have been disappointed with how things are.”

Stella said the biggest shocker of all she learned from Food Inc. was that there are “only five major players that provide all the food.”
