“This year, we’re starting to make our own raspberry ice cream at Dirt Candy and will use Cascadian Farm berries. They’re never bland-they have a pure raspberry flavor that rivals fresh berries. In fact, they’re so sweet, hey need little or no added sugar, even if you eat them plain.”

Amanda Cohen, former chef for Moby’s Teany and owner and chef of Dirt Candy vegetarian restaurant in New York city.

Amanda was one of several chefs asked by Vegetarian Times what organic products could be found in their kitchens.

Cascadian Farm not only has the organic raspberries you need this summer, but all the other vegetables you need to eat until your pesticide-free heart is content.

The Pretenders Perform In Madrid

Chrissie Hynde recently interviewed with the New York Post, where she mentioned how successful her vegan restaurant, The Vegiterranean, is in her hometown of Akron, Ohio.

Located in the heart of the midwest, Chrissie couldn’t have picked a less veg friendly region-unless we’re talking about a cattle ranch town!

But two years later, The Vegiterranean is still going strong.

A few highlights from the interview:

Akron seems like a meat-eating kind of town. How has your vegan menu been received?

Everyone told me, “Don’t do it.” I had a resounding chorus of “You will go under” from all corners. But it’s been a huge success. And you’re right, it’s a real meat-eating town. I’m actually still surprised when I meet a meat eater. It makes so little sense, especially now that everybody knows the score as far as the treatment of the animals, the factory farms and the environment — not to mention the health implications. Why go to the gym every day when you can just eat right? I mean, look how gorgeous I am, and I don’t do anything.

How are people responding to what you’re doing there?

It’s funny, because yesterday I was thinking, what am I doing this for? I was feeling kind of isolated. And then I went to the restaurant, and six different groups of people walked up and said, “We’ve come in from out of town because we wanted to see the restaurant. You should put one in our city, because we really need it.” And I thought, it’s working. I was quite stunned.

The First Family Arrives At The White House - Washington

Okay, so we’re a little nasty with the headline, but geez…

Hope for little Sasha and Malia Obama is running low as burger runs seem to be on both sides of the family.

First lady Michelle Obama was spotted with daughters Sasha and Malia eating at Good Stuff Eatery, a D.C. burger joint owned by former Top Chef contestant Spike Mendelsohn.

According to Justjared.buzznet.com, the Obama ladies ordered their cheeseburgers cooked medium with onion rings, fries, and milkshakes while the Secret Service agents looked on without eating.

Hey, those that protect the political family need to at least keep their arteries clean.

We wish Mrs. Obama would just stick to eating from her garden.

3rd Annual Black Girls Rock! Awards

Erykah Badu is known for visiting her hometown food joints, such as the Spiral Diner.

The latest news is that the soul singing diva likes to frequent a vegan bakery called Tough Cookie Bakery in Dallas, Texas.

From pegasunews.com:

“Even Erykah Badu is known to swing by The Green Spot every now and then to pick up a few those oh-so-decadent vegan cinnamon rolls we all dream about. And who can blame her? (Hmm — I wonder if she’s also responsible for those empty trays at The Pearl Cup…)”

“Well, Erykah — maybe your next cinnamon roll will include a little love from me, too!”

Tough Cookie makes not so tough tasting vegan cookies, muffins, pretzels and cinnamon rolls and is looking to create their own line of gluten-free pastries, pizza crusts, pies and breads in the future.

Gwyneth Paltrow matches up designer Preen and Kabbalah accessories at event

Gwyneth Paltrow’s website Goop is a hit and miss for the Veg Star.

On the one hand, we find way too many recipes for bird burgers showing up on there.

Then again, we have to forgive a gal who puts Vegenaise vegan mayo on a vegan B.L.T. sandwich with avocado.

Vanity Fair has taken the opportunity to mock Goop, and here are a few veg related highlights:

Do
“Many of you have asked if I have any tips on how to get leggings on quicker. My in-house leggings guru advises rubbing onto your legs a paste made from five spoonfuls of extra-virgin olive oil, turbinado sugar, and coarsely ground fair-trade coffee. If you have any further problems, then next week I’ll be recommending a truly great creative-leggings clinic.”

Shanna Moakler Regrets Ringling Brothers Circus Outing

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, August 7th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Models, Videos.

Us Weekly Hot Hollywood - Arrivals

Shanna Moakler, ex-wife of Travis Barker and a longtime vegetarian, recently took her family to a Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus show.

However, she now regrets that decision after watching video footage on how animals are treated by handlers.

“My family and I attended the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus a couple weeks ago, and I believed—as I know many do—that the circus would treat its animals humanely. I was so deeply saddened when I saw PETA’s video showing the horrific abuse the elephants suffered at the hands of Ringling trainers. I took for granted that people were doing the right thing. I hope everyone watches the video at PETA.org. With this new knowledge, we can draw attention to this issue, make changes, and ensure that animals big and small are properly cared for. No amount of entertainment is worth allowing the torture of other living beings. We will never attend another Ringling Bros. show.”

If you’re interested in viewing the video Shanna watched, you can watch it here.
