Maya Angelou’s Health-Food Diner Retaliation

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 in Authors, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian.

Maya Angelou Signs Copies Of

Maya Angelou is one of the most respected and brilliant poets and speakers of her time. A chance to see her speak live is truly an extraordinary experience. Which is why it’s so disappointing to learn the motivation behind her Health-Food Diner poem.

The poet and author who’s been involved with human rights certainly doesn’t crusade for animal rights. Or at least not when she’s ticked off or offended.

Angelou, who was a big supporter of Hillary Clinton on the recent Presidential campaign trail, walked into a vegetarian restaurant in the 80s where smoking wasn’t allowed. However, there were no visible signs that said, “No Smoking,” so Angelou decided to light one up. It was then when a waitress scolded her for endangering the health of the other patrons.

So Maya wrote Health-Food Diner, praising meat:

Health-food folks around the world
Are thinned by anxious zeal,
They look for help in seafood kelp
(I count on breaded veal)

Ouch! Not only is she praising eating animals, she’s praising eating baby animals taken away from mom just days after being born.

Really, Maya, how cruel can you get?

Wouldn’t it have been better just to write about annoying, granola biting, skinny, health food nuts and wished a bad case of bloating and gas on them from eating too many fibrous foods?

Luckily for her, at least she hasn’t smoked in two decades.

Lily Allen Doesn’t Make Us “Smile” With Vicious Fur Hat

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 in Female Singers, Fur.

Lily Allen has fun in the snow

English singer-songwriter Lily Allen was playing in the snow on Primose Hill earlier this month to celebrate the success of her single, “The Fear” before, before going to the KOKO club in Camden Town, London.

However, there are no animals celebrating with her as that’s real fur on her head!

Surely doesn’t put a Smile on our faces.

She’s been seen with her Prada fox fur hat before, so you’d think the nasty comments she’s generated online might deter her from doing so.

No such luck.

She described the hat as “viciously expensive.”

While expensive is often relative to your income, “vicious” couldn’t be closer to the truth.

Vegan Peter Max Paints 44 Obamas

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 in Artists.

6th Annual Women's Day Red Dress Awards

When vegan artist Peter Max wasn’t dining at Candle Cafe in his neighborhood, he was busy putting 44 faces on President Barack Obama.

Max has painted portraits of the U.S.’s last five presidents, and to celebrate Obama as the 44th president, Max painted 44 different portraits.

He used numerous photos provided to him by CBS and began working before the Christmas Holiday season.

He debuted the portraits CBS’ “The Early Show” last month.

This is not the first of a series of portraits Max has completed. After the 9/11 tragedy, he took nine months to paint all 343 faces of the firefighters who died that day for the American Heroes’ project, a gift to the firefighters’ families.

A portion of the money generated from the Obama portraits will go towards orphanages, according to Max.

Carrie Underwood Wants It Everyday!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 in Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Celebrities attend the Clive Davis Pre - Grammy Gala

Carrie Underwood had previously mentioned she wanted a  home cooked vegetarian meal for Valentine’s Day.

Scratch that. She wants it everyday. Uh, a home cooked vegetarian meal, that is…sometimes you gotta elaborate.

American Idol alumnus said she really doesn’t like Valentine’s Day and that couples should show their love every day of the year, according Lime Life.

“I’m anti-Valentine’s Day. I don’t believe – and this goes for anybody – your man shouldn’t love you for one day out of 365. He should love you 365 days out of the year. I want Valentine’s Day every day.”

She has said before that she’d choose animals over men, because a good dog was much easier to find than a good man. Looks like she found another good dog to spend the day with.

She traveled with her rat terrier this past Valentine’s Day.

Hope they got lots of snuggling in.

Kareena Kapoor Sexiest, But Why Do People Care?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 in Actresses, Bollywood.

People sometimes harp that the PETA ads for vegetarianism have little to do with eating vegetables and more with objectifying woman. Now one their “Sexiest” is even questioning the point of the contests.

“I fail to understand who makes these lists?” Kapoor said after receiving the India Today Woman Award presented by Erin Brockovich. Yes, THE Erin Brockovich, the real life busty and brainy woman who Julia Roberts played in the 2000 movie based on the real story of how an everyday gal exposed a company for their anti-environmental practices.

“Instead of featuring on these lists, I would rather receive awards such as the India Today Woman Award,” Kareena added.

Kapoor was a winner in the arts category, who said this of her achievements.

“I believe in inner strength-that’s why I was able to reach where I am. There may be competition and negativity but if you have an inner belief you can reach your goals and fulfil your dreams.”

Florida’s House of Representatives member Bill Galvano had a habit of ordering a particular sandwich at Andrew’s Capital Bar and Grill in Tallahassee more than a fiscal conservative votes against more spending.  So the eating establishment elected to name a sandwich after him.

The Galvano Tuscano Eggplant Supreme is a fried eggplant, spinach, red onion, tomato, sprouts, roasted garlic hummus, and balsamic vinegar treat rolled into a wrap or piled high on bread of your choice.

It’s one of three vegetarian sandwiches on the lunch menu.

Although it’s not known whether or not the Republican representative is vegetarian,  it is known that he had a predictable record of ordering the sandwich when he dined there.

Chris Evans Says Being Pushed Into Tofu Turned Him Green

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 in Actors, Not So Vegetarian.

Premiere of Summit Entertainment's

Poor, poor, pitiful Chris Evans.

The actor who is currently staring in Push (the same movie where the vegetarian director wanted to blow up fishes) says he became vegetarian on the advice of his ex-girlfriend (then current, of course) and it turned him the color of veggies-green.

“I was just getting even thinner than I am now,” Evans said.

“I had a hard time putting on weight, and some of my friends said I was getting green. I’m incredibly pale anyway. I don’t know what was missing, but they all said I had a greenish hue.”

“Finally, I was, like, ‘Hamburger, please.’ ”

Maybe if he had said, “nutritionist, please,” he wouldn’t have won an Academy Award for best actor as Kermit the frog.

Many people who experience negative effects from going vegetarian do so because they aren’t eating enough or eating properly. It takes more than three grilled cheese sandwiches a day, Chris. Evans didn’t mention what he ate during his stint.

The actor has also had roles in Not Another Teen Movie, Cellular, Street Kings, Human Torch, and Fantastic Four films.
