The Simpsons In The Classroom

The Simpsons have made numerous pop culture contributions since the cartoon debuted in the late 80s, but who would have thought the FOX series would make academic impact as well.

“The Simpsons in the Classroom: Embiggening the Learning Experience with the Wisdom of Springfield” by Karma Waltonen and Denise Du Vernay, is a look at Springfield’s favorite family through the eyes of a PhD and a Master’s in American Literature, giving suggested mind exploratory exercises such as writing an essay on whether or not the show is respectful of different religions.

Dr. Waltonen told The Sacramento Bee her favorite episode is “Lisa The Vegetarian” partly because Lisa doesn’t go back to eating meat.

“It’s an episode where a character changes, and the change stays. In a lot of sitcoms you don’t actually have things move, but Lisa has remained a vegetarian. And the two-minute “meat industry” (skit) in that episode – “Meat and You: Partners in Freedom” – are the funniest that have ever been on television.”

A clip from “Meat and You: Partners in Freedom”, can be seen after the break.

"Top Chef Masters" Lisa Adams

"Top Chef Masters" Jody Adams

Top Chef Masters Lisa Adams wasn’t just competing when she made a vegetarian dish to honor The Simpsons’ Lisa Simpson during a recent challenge on the show.

This chef would actually eat what she made–and encourages others to do the same.

“I had just a small glance of Lisa’s personality and I knew she was a vegetarian,” Adams told Reality Wanted. “I loved cooking a dish that I would love to cook for myself. A mentor chef of mine once said to “cook for yourself first, then cook for your customer and lastly, cook for the press.” That is the key to authentic cooking.”

Adams and her husband are collecting vegetable based recipes for a cookbook or a website with a focus more on plant based diets.

“It is better for the planet, for the animals, and for our health,” she said.

In addition, she’s planning a trip to Washington, D.C. to talk to the Environmental Protection Agency about food.

“The word is getting out to the public that we need to eat differently, and communities are seeing the issues they face with eating,” Adams said, adding that vegetables need to be made “sexy” again.

Last night’s episode of Top Chef Masters had the competing chefs making meals that would please The Simpsons.

As you probably already know, there are two characters that shun meat on the popular cartoon, Lisa Simpson and Apu, and the chefs who cooked for them whipped up delicious sounding vegetarian delights.

The judges included some of The Simpsons’ crew, like creator Matt Groening and Hank Azaria who voices Chief Wiggum and Apu.

Jody made a Cracked Wheat Salad with Goats Milk Ricotta and BBQ beets and baked kale chips for Lisa, which the judges thought she’d love, and Marcus created Tomato Soup with Rice, Chickpeas, Chutney, Melon and Nuts for Apu.

Unfortunately, it was Rick’s shrimp meal for Homer that won.

But hey, Jody and Marcus’ meals sure give you great ideas for dinner!

For twenty years The Simpsons have been doing special Halloween episodes full of bizarre humor you’ve come to love.

This year featured the citizens of Springfield inflicted with a mad cow type disease after eating the Krusty the Clown hamburger called Burger Squared.

They should have known better than to take something from Krusty.

Burger Squared is produced by “starting with Grade A beef, feeding it to other cows and then serving the unholy results on a seven grain bun.”

Most everyone in town eats the burgers and turns into zombies, leaving The Simpsons and a few vegetarians like Apu running for their lives.

When Lisa asks Apu how he survived, he answers, “Well, as a vegetarian, I did not consume any tainted meat and as a convenience store owner, I am armed to the teeth.”

Unfortunately, it wasn’t that easy and Apu perished after all.

Watch the clip to see how.

The Simpsons turn Angolan for Africas DStv

Britain’s Department of Health is sponsoring three months of The Simpsons on Britain’s Channel 4 to help teach people about healthy lifestyles.

Huh?

Homer Simpson eating donut after donut isn’t exactly the paradigm of healthy living, but health officials believe the family has enough “healthy” elements and mass appeal to teach a lesson everyone could be reminded of to control obesity.

“The Simpsons are a much-loved, close-knit family facing some of the everyday challenges that modern-day families go through,” said Gillian Merron, public health minister. “They provide a popular and engaging way to get the message to real-life families about simple ways of improving their diet and activity for a healthier lifestyle.”

Like Lisa Simpson, the vegetarian. From the Times Online:

“Bart’s sister, Lisa, is a vegetarian and is likely to consume the daily target of five portions of fruit and vegetables.”

Also, Bart usually gets his recommended 60 minutes of exercise daily, whether it’s through skateboarding or vigorously trying to free himself from Homer’s choke grasp.

The department recognizes that not all the Simpsons’ lifestyle patterns and behaviors are healthy and this is reflected in the slogan: “Supporting The Simpsons: Sometimes.”

At the beginning of each episode, viewers will see the traditional Simpson gathering on the couch like the picture above, with junk food in their hands. Then, the junk food will disappear and be replaced with wholesome nutritional food like fresh produce.

Hmm…Is this an opportunity for the cat and dog to try veg?

The Simpsons turn Angolan for Africas DStv

David Mirkin, executive producer for The Simpsons has pulled in some great celebrities to guest star on the show including Leonard DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, and Paul McCartney.

McCartney was quite adamant about the conditions of his appearance, though.

He agreed to only do it if Mirkin kept Lisa Simpson a vegetarian for every episode.

“It’s actually Paul McCartney who was responsible for another permanent change,” Mirkin said. “When I asked him to do the vegetarian episode, he agreed but made me promise to keep Lisa as a vegetarian – and I was happy to comply with that because I’m a vegetarian too! Every time I see him, he always checks – and he’s always surrounded by nine or ten lawyers, so it’s quite frightening!”

Lisa is a veg. Apu is a veg. David is a veg. We’re hoping Marge’s twin sisters make the plunge next!
