Ruben Studdard Shows All Vegs Don’t Have To Be Skinny

The word is that American Idol season 2 winner Ruben Studdard is back on the veg wagon, after gossip that he had fallen off.

According to Ruben, he’s feeling better than ever and in great health, despite not having a 32 inch waistline.

“I am a vegetarian now and I think that’s the one thing that saved me from being over the top. I also work out every day and have a trainer on the road with me. I saw pictures of myself at the beginning of ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Ruben Studdard CD and I look like a whole other person now. I’m down like five or six pants sizes. I’ve been a vegetarian for about two and a half years now. I probably miss fried chicken the most. I feel better. You can’t pay for the way you feel after you start. I’m not saying that people who eat meat don’t feel great because I’m sure they do, but it works for me. I don’t want people that sell meat to be knocking on my door saying, ‘You’re still fat. You ain’t lost that much weight.’”

Hey, who said going veg was about going thin?

Are you a “pleasantly plump” or “thick” veg who still has low cholesterol and a kick ass resting heart rate? Did dropping the hot dog bring you health benefits, even if it didn’t bring you six pack abs or a size 2 dress?

Anoop Desai Drafted For Animal Safe Sex Education By PETA

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 24th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

American Idol Top 13 Party

Anoop Desai walked the plank on American Idol this week because he didn’t receive enough votes.

But just because he didn’t win American Idol, doesn’t mean he’s not being drafted by companies to be a spokesperson.

PETA India thinks Anoop would be perfect to front a campaign on getting pets spayed and neutered.

The group is  asking him to appear in a video supporting its Animal Birth Control (ABC) campaign to “implement humane methods of controlling companion animal populations in slums” in India.

Said N G Jayasimha, campaign manager of PETA India, to IANS:

“Anoop Desai is a huge hit in India because of being an Indian. He is an inspiration. There are sentiments of Indians associated with him and we want him to join the cause like previous ‘American Idol’ Vanessa Olivarez, Kellie Pickler and Ruben Studdard as well as judge Simon Cowell in using his celebrity status to help PETA help animals.”

“We want him to speak up for the dogs on the streets, as they really suffer a lot and need a voice. Though he is now out of the show, but he still has a huge appeal and fan following and we are hoping to ride on that,” he added.

Although we were hoping Anoop would follow his immigrant parents’ vegetarian diet, being an advocate for animals will keep him from being eliminated with our votes.

Ruben Studdard Veg Again, No Longer Misbehavin’

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, April 12th, 2009 in Male Singers.

Radio Ones 25th Anniversary Awards Gala

Ruben Studdard went veg in 2006 to combat some health problems and ended up losing some love handles as well.

However, last time he was asked if he was still sticking to his vegetarian diet, he replied, “Currently trying to return.”

Talk about disappointment! We were saddened to learn our favorite American Idol teddy bear had fallen off the wagon.

That’s why we’re ecstatic to learn that he might at least have one leg in the wagon again.

When interviewed recently by boston.com, Ruben asked, “So, where are the good vegetarian restaurants in Boston?”

Does this mean Ruben is back to veg for good?

He’s currently working his butt off, probably both literally and figuratively, starring in the Fats Waller musical Ain’t Misbehavin

Studdard’s been performing eight shows a week for the past five months! You know that takes a lot of his favorite Morningstar Farms products, veggie buffalo wings, and PF Chang’s dinners he loves so much to refuel.

Glad to hear he’s asking about the veggie spots in town. Hopefully, this means he’s no longer misbehavin’ with his diet.

Have you ever fallen off the vegetarian wagon? What made you do it? How did you get back on it? Confess now!

American Idol Finalist Anoop Desai Had Vegetarian Past

American Idol Top 13 Party

What is it with all these folks coming over to America and ditching their veggie ways?

First, we were saddened to learn that Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi slowly started to eat “bologna” and “pepperoni pizza” as a teenager, then progressed to full blown Hardee’s Bacon Western Thickburger spokseperson.

Now, we learn a finalist on this season’s “American Idol”, Anoop Desai, was “raised by family of vegetarian immigrants,” but assimilated himself to become a “typical American kid who eats typical American food.”

Uh-oh. And you know what “typical” is.

One of his family members said, “But he has a lot of discipline, and though he enjoys food greatly, we have never seen him overeat.”

Desai was a lucky man after being asked to come back to the show on a “wildcard” in a previously unannounced 13th spot.

Maybe if he wins, he’ll get back into the club with Kellie Pickler, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, and the off the wagon, trying to get back on it Ruben Studdard.

Carrie Underwood’s Idol Elimination Song Benefits Humane Society

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 10th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Singers.

Since Carrie Underwood won American Idol in 2005, she never had the “farewell” song played for her, but this season, she’ll be singing it for everyone else sent home weekly.

Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” has been chosen for the song that’s played while the losing contestant’s Idol experiences are portrayed on the screen.

In the past, tunes sung by former Idols Ruben Studdard and Chris Daughtry have been used as farewell songs.

Carrie’s version of the song will be available on iTunes March 16th, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Humane Society of the United States.

The vegetarian singer said in a press release:

“I’ve always loved this song, and besides being very fitting for Idol, to me, the title is also very fitting with animal rescue and finding animals their own homes.”

The singer has professed her love for animals in the past, even saying that she’d choose animals over men, because she’s found lots of good animals, but not a good man.

Kelly Clarkson Vegetarian Idol Now!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 18th, 2009 in Female Singers, Videos.

Wow. Talk about what’s been happening “since she’s been gone.”

Kelly Clarkson is vegetarian now and has been one for about a year.

During a recent interview with Trent FM UK, Kelly’s interviewer was talking about his experiences in Amarillo, Texas, where the world’s biggest steak-72 ounces-is served.

Kelly said, “My friends have kind of disowned me a bit in Texas because I’ve been a vegetarian for over a year now.”

Don’t worry Kelly. Fellow Idol winner Carrie Underwood knows your pain.

“You can’t be a vegetarian in Texas,” the interviewer jokingly objects.

“I tried it and it’s been really great…So a 72 ounce steak might make me barf,” Kelly continued. “It’s so much better now. I feel better,” she added.

The interviewer concluded by pleading with Kelly to “eat some steak, please,” telling her she was missing her nutrients. Ha! Smart gal Kelly responded that “you get enough nutrients [from things] like beans and everything.”

We’ve got Kelly Clarkson, Kellie Pickler, Carrie Underwood, and off the wagon trying to get back on Ruben Studdard in the veg American Idol club.

Kelly’s new album, All I Ever Wanted, is set to be released in March.

Listen to the video to hear the interview and Kelly talk about her fake red carpet smile. The vegetarian part of the conversation starts around minute 4:45.

Best Veggie Stories Of 2008

Heather Mills Named Honorary Chair Of Hunts Point Alliance For Children

Hope your New Year’s party plans are coming along well and your crib is stocked full of veggie goodies for the big celebration. Every one’s doing a “best of” list for 2008, so it makes sense for us to bring you a few of our favorites, which were some of the most heavily trafficked posts this year. Drum roll please…

Honorable Mention: 111 Year Old Woman Attributed Long Life To Vegetarianism-Aida May was not a celebrity, per se, but she should be a role model to anyone who wants to unlock the key to a long, healthy life!

#5: Kellie Pickler Turned Vegetarian-With the help of Idol alum Carrie Underwood and PETA queen Pamela Anderson, Miss Pickler is now a part of the Idol veg club. Which is a good thing since Ruben Studdard has fallen off the wagon.

#4: Rachael Ray BOB: Rachael Ray’s newest cookbook, Big Orange Book, has an entire chapter devoted towards vegetarian food. She did this after listening to her fans on the road that demanded more of these recipes.

#3: Anne Hathaway Became A Quitter: After an on again/off again relationship with the veg life, soon after Anne dumped her con ex boyfriend, she picked up tofu again.

#2: Pamela Anderson Tries Vegan KFC: Pammie visited a KFC in her home country of Canada, which now serves a vegan faux chicken patty. It won’t make every one happy, but it is a significant step towards making vegan food available in mainstream restaurants.

#1: Heather Mills Donates A Million Dollars Worth Of Veggie Food To Charity: Because everyone deserves the opportunity to eat vegetarian food, regardless of socio-economic status. Heather did a wonderful deed by donating veggie burgers, veggie dogs, and all sorts of goodies-she even showed up at an event to grill some of it.

Ruben Studdard Fallen Veg Idol

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 24th, 2008 in Male Singers, Not So Vegetarian.

AMERICAN IDOL GRAND FINALE 2008, DAY 1

Ruben Studdard is in veg rehab. The “American Idol” Season 2 winner who was very public about how his vegetarian diet helped him lose weight has been lapsing a little. But he’s trying to get, ahem, clean.

When asked by The Sunday Paper if he was still keeping up with his vegetarian lifestyle, he laughed and replied, “Currently trying to return.”

What’s the deal with this? Ruben Studdard, who raved about Morningstar Farms products, vegetarian buffalo wings, and PF Chang’s Buddha’s Feast and Tofu Lettuce Wraps turned to meat for some satisfaction?

Former Idol contestant Kellie Pickler recently became veg with the help of vegetarian Idol winner Carrie Underwood. Is this some kind of karma thing, where we lose one and gain another. Surely there’s enough room in the Idol Vegetarian Club?

Maybe it was because of his new wife’s eating habits. Boo! We can’t have any beefy Yoko Ono’s breaking up the veg band.

So we will anxiously await Ruben’s return to our side. Have any of you ever fallen off the veg bandwagon for any reason?
