Gretchen Jones was the “Project Runway” season 8 winner who came determined to stick to green designing ways when the competition got tough on the runway.

Jones was known for using low-impact dyes, locally sourced materials, organic cotton, bamboo and other eco-friendly materials such as soy, a fabric derived from the process of manufacturing soy food products.

Jones is expanding her resume and is writing a regular column for the popular online green website, Ecosalon.com.

"Project Runway" Gretchen Jones

Gretchen Jones, the Oregon-based designer who pledged to use sustainable materials on this season’s Project Runway, has battled it out to the finals. Most recently, the contestants were challenged to design a look inspired by New York city. Gretchen travels to the lower east side, using the brick facade of buildings that inspires an outfit consisting of a white top, skirt and leather cropped jacket.

The jacket could have been faux, but if it wasn’t, the designer who introduced herself as the purveyor of organic  fibers made a fashion faux pas to present leather as a material in her collection of sustainable designs.

Green is good. And the judges of Project Runway agreed on that recently when this season’s sustainable designer on the show, Gretchen Jones, won the very first challenge.

Jones, who’s patterns include organic cotton, hand-dyed fabrics and soy fibers, impressed Heidi Klum and the others on the “And Sew It Begins” episode. Ironically, the task was a lesson is using less as well. Instead of starting from scratch, Jones had to create a look using a garment from another contestant’s suitcase.

Jones has said on the show, “I always want to be fashion first. I want you to purchase me because I’m an amazing brand that just happens to be green.”

We’ve recovered from the cat throwing former contestant on Project Runway and this season, we’re excited that Gretchen Jones is competing with her organic cotton denim and other sustainable clothing.

Jones told Oregon Live, “I use natural fibers and try to impact my environment by making things to order; I don’t over-produce. I also try to sustain the economy that supports me,” Jones said about buying local.

While we’re loving Tim Gunn‘s anti-fur stance, it’s surprising to learn he was hesitate about Jones using only sustainable materials in the competition. Such little faith?

A little update on that vegetarian sushi roll named after season 5 winner of Project Runway, Leanne Marshall. Although previous reports said Marshall had created the roll herself, The Portland Mercury is reporting the roll was already on the menu, and H50 Bistro & Bar simply named it after her, once she described what she looks for in a sushi roll.

Marshall said, “Basically, I told him that I normally go for vegetarian/non-fish sushi and then my favorite things: avocado, hot sauce, cilantro (and then listed pretty much all the ingredients to make a burrito. Ha!) As long as it had avocado and something spicy, I left the rest up to the professional chef. If it were me making it, yes, I would probably have tried to make burrito-sushi, and it would likely be a disaster!”

A picture of the burrito-sushi can be viewed below.

Project Runway season 5 winner Leanne Marshall has designed a fashionable, edible treat that will benefit the cleanup efforts directed at the Gulf Coast oil spill.

For each month during the summer, H5O Bistro & Bar in Portland, Oregon has teamed up with local celebrities to create a sushi roll that benefits the celebrity’s charity of choice.

Marshall created a vegetarian sushi roll with cabbage salad and spicy aioli that benefits Oceana, Eater reports. The organization is the largest international one dedicated to ocean conservation.

Oceana has created a map that is regularly updated on the oil spill and the areas it affects, especially as it pertains to wildlife. Wildlife covered in oil and areas of oiled beaches are indicated, as well as the thickness of the oil in a particular area. Wildlife tracked include brown pelicans, sea turtles, and tuna.

“Project Runway” Makes Trash Classier Than Leather (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 26th, 2010 in Fashion, Reality TV, Videos.

Stella McCartney said that wearing leather is just plain trashy.

One contestant from Season 7’s Project Runway thought the same, so he proved even a trash bag looks better than animal hide.

The outfit, including the woven belt, is contructed entirely from Hefty’s, and is meant is resemble faux leather.

Jay Nicolas Sario said he thought of the words, “Sexy bitch,” when he created the outfit.

The judges are impressed and one said, We’ve seen many garbage bags on Project Runway, but never quite like this.”

Take a look and decide for yourself.

Could this faux be taken for real?

Ellen DeGeneres was named Woman of the Year by PETA for her contributions to promoting vegetarianism and animal welfare.

And who was voted as her male counterpart for the title?

None other than fur hating fashion guru Tim Gunn.

Both Ellen and Tim let their cruelty-free fashion sense do the accessorizing.

Fur is banned from Project Runway and Ellen’s given away vegan handbags to her audience.

You’d love to have both a faux fur coat and a leather-free bag, but if you had to choose between Tim or Ellen, who would you rather do…
