Mayim Bialik Asks Jews To Go Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, August 28th, 2013 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Food & Drink.

Mayim Bialik

Mayim Bialik is well accustomed to modifying traditional Jewish recipes to fit the criteria for being vegan.

Her upcoming cookbook, The Plant-Based Family Kitchen, will be especially devoted to creating animal-free versions of things like egg-free latkes and vegan tofu matzah brei.

Many followers of religion feel treating animals kindly is a duty, much like caring for the sick and poor and being a good neighbor. Bialik feels no differently and is using the approaching Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah to ask Jews to consider removing animal products from their diets.

Matisyahu

Matisyahu last made the vegan news with a declaration of his love for greens.

“I feel dark green vegetables are really important, so every day i try to have some type of dark greens, whether sauteed or grilled or steamed, or in a juice,” he told Vegetarian Times.

Potatoes wouldn’t be the same without the (faux) meat, and a reuben sandwich with tempeh can be made even healthier by substituting greens for the fries.

Matisyahu

Matisyahu was spotted coming out of a restaurant in L.A. recently when he was asked who was the better Jewish rapper, him or Drake.

Drake, born Aubrey Drake Graham to a Jewish Canadian mother and African-American father from Tennessee, is a hip-hop artist who first made a name for himself in the entertainment business by starring as Jimmy Brooks in Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Matisyahu thinks Drake’s Jewishness can’t compete with his. It’s time for a rapping, Jewish man faceoff!

TMZ: He’s [Drake] going around saying he’s the best Jew to ever do it [have a successful rap career]. Who’s more kosher man? You or Drake?

Matisyahu Goes Vegan And It Helps Him Keep Kosher

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 5th, 2011 in Food & Drink, Male Singers.

Matisyahu

Jewish reggae star Matisyahu went vegan after reading Jonathan Safran Foer‘s Eating Animals. Did this mean he found a whole new set of restrictions to follow that made keeping kosher more difficult? Actually, it was the exact opposite, especially considering he longer has to worry about eating kosher meat.

“My diet consists of quinoa, miso, almond milk, kashi cereal, flax seed oil, oatmeal, veggies, fruit, juice, veggie burgers, etc. I guess the thing I was really into on the last tour was quinoa with flax seed oil and tamari,” Matisyahu said.

Richard H. Schwartz, Ph.D. at JewishVeg discussed the various benefits of being a vegan Jew, as it reduces the effort of eating kosher.
